The story takes place in old Tokyo, the Tokyo of August-September 1923 (Showa 12). At this moment in time, the city is a mixture of extremes... past and present, rich and poor, good and bad. This is a city where we see both horsecarts and motorcars, swords and pistols, lords and businessmen.

A wealthy woman from an upper-class family finds herself attracted to a handsome young man, Taka. He and his younger brother seem to be allied, perhaps not entirely willingly, with some of the city's criminal underground (Yakuza). The lady's lovely young maidservant, Sara, meets him too, and a conflict ensues which can only lead to tragedy, passion, and dishonor. But, as events move on, and the days pass, the viewer sees a terrible date coming closer...

Both anime were created by the same team: written an directed by Satoshi Dezaki with art and character designs by Akio Sugino. Their style is immediately recognizable and created many classics such as Ashita no Joe, Ace wo Nerae!, Golgo 13, Versailles no Bara and many more. Both Onii-sama and Kasei apply this to mature anime for women, both of them with dark tones and over the top melodrama. Kasei is basically the movie-in-a-movie the cast of Oniisama watches in episode 25. It's even darker, and has more adult scenes (sex and violence) - it takes over where Oniisama had to end due to PG-13. The stories both involve upper class women, school aged in Onisama and early 20s in Kasei.

Great mature tragic romance title, loved everything: the plot, the characters, the art style, the soundtrack (especially the ending song, epic!)... sadly, the story is incomplete, only way to really know how it all ends is by reading the manga which is been mission impossible for me so far.

Still, definitely a must watch for any romance fan...josei anime at its finest!

This was not bad in any way, but the 4 episodes felt a bit overcrowded. I am sad this show was not longer. Also, if you are not into open endings you might want to give this one a skip.
