DON'T expect lots of long fights; DO expect lots of dialogue and character development. This is a character drama through and through, with some small slices of action and comedy as a bonus. The music is fantastic and its peculiar art style just works, especially in combination with some great shot compositions. It's a beautiful anime in all aspects, visually and otherwise.
It's rare to see a story about swords and fighting be so grounded in its perspectives. And rarer still to see any story unravel and end so beautifully - though elegant endings do seem to be one of Nisio Isin's strenghts. He also likes to pull the rug out from under his audience and this one is no exception, but it does it so well that it only makes me want to recommend it even more.
No reason to miss this.

Colorful animation, full-screen shots of text describing what's being said (or situation itself). Scenes where seemingly nothing happens.
