Shinbou Akiyuki was born on September 27, 1961 in Fukushima Prefecture. After graduating with a diploma from Tokyo Designer Gakuin College, he began working as animator at Studio Oz, before moving to Studio Pierrot, where he made his directing debut in 1990 on some episodes of Karakuri Kengo Musashi Lord, his other and more known involvement was in Yuu Yuu Hakusho.
In 1994 he made his directorial debut on a tv series, Metal Fighter Miku, before turning to direct OVAs, which included Galaxy Fraulein Yuna Returns, Shin Polymar, Debutante Detective Corps and Detatoko Princess. Around that time he was also again involved in several outstanding episodes of Ninku, another Studio Pierrot action title, which also saw the return of several other people which worked together with him in Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Wakabayashi Atsushi and Nishio Tetsuya.
In 1996 he had also his most successful work until then, with Starship Girl Yamamoto Youko, which was followed by a second OVA in 1997 and a tv series adaptation in 1999. Further works around that time included the OVAs Twilight of the Dark Master and Tenamonya Voyagers.
2001 saw the release of SoulTaker. A tokusatsu inspired anime series which presented an all going out Shinbou, who had perfected his style and approach to film making by then. This result was further demonstrated in the short OVA Cossette no Shouzou three years later.
Currently affiliated with Studio Shaft, where he has been not only involved in almost every work, mostly as director or executive director, but together with his protégé and right hand Oonuma Shin and Oota Kazuhiro heavily inflicted his style on each production.
