Question
Question asked by Filo student
Consider two coaxial, very long, cylindrical, thin shells. Both shells have length L. The inner shell (radius a) carries positive charge Q distributed uniformly over its surface. The outer shell (radius b) carries negative charge -Q distributed uniformly over its surface. a) Show that the resulting electric field between the shells is (using polar coordinates): E = 0 for a < r < b where E is the electric field, a is the radius of the inner shell, and b is the radius of the outer shell. b) Determine the constant a in terms of the given parameters. c) Explain where you used the fact that the cylindrical shells are "very long".

Question Text | Consider two coaxial, very long, cylindrical, thin shells. Both shells have length L. The inner shell (radius a) carries positive charge Q distributed uniformly over its surface. The outer shell (radius b) carries negative charge -Q distributed uniformly over its surface.
a) Show that the resulting electric field between the shells is (using polar coordinates):
E = 0 for a < r < b
where E is the electric field, a is the radius of the inner shell, and b is the radius of the outer shell.
b) Determine the constant a in terms of the given parameters.
c) Explain where you used the fact that the cylindrical shells are "very long". |
