Alvin W. Thompson is a federal judge on senior status on the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. He joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton and assumed senior status on August 31, 2018.

Early life and education

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Thompson graduated from Princeton University with his bachelor's degree in 1975 and from Yale Law School with his J.D. in 1978.[1]

Thompson was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut by President Bill Clinton on September 14, 1994, to a seat vacated by Ellen Burns. The American Bar Association rated Thompson Substantial Majority Qualified, Minority Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Thompson's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 28, 1994, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on October 5, 1994. Thompson was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on October 7, 1994, and he received his commission on October 11, 1994. From 2009 to 2013, Thompson served as chief judge of the district court.[1][2][3] He assumed senior status on August 31, 2018.
