Cameron Sexton (Republican Party) is a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives, representing District 25. He assumed office in 2010. His current term ends on November 3, 2026.

Sexton (Republican Party) ran for re-election to the Tennessee House of Representatives to represent District 25. He won in the general election on November 5, 2024.

On August 23, 2019, Sexton was elected as House speaker to replace Glen Casada (R) after Casada resigned.[1]

Sexton was born on November 11, 1970, in Lake City, Tennessee. He received a degree in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee in 1994.[2] Sexton worked at Cumberland County Bank where he worked in business development and on the bank's board of directors.[3]

Sexton was first elected in 2010, defeating Charles Ray Rains (D) 67.2%-40%. He served as House Republican Caucus Chairman for the 111th General Assembly and as Majority Whip during the 108th General Assembly. Sexton was also a member of a number of House committees, including the Health and Calendar and Rules Committees.[3][4]

Sexton opposed accepting federal Medicaid expansion funds, instead supporting funding in the form of block grants.[5] He sponsored legislation increasing penalties for certain crimes and requiring some offenders to serve their full prison sentence rather than being released on parole.[6][7] In 2021, Sexton sponsored a bill making school board elections partisan, rather than nonpartisan.[8] During the COVID-19 pandemic, he supported legislation that prohibited municipalities from establishing face mask or vaccine requirements.[9]

Sexton said his political priorities were "making sure that our kids, when they graduate high school, can get a job; that people when they commit a crime, they do the time; and make sure our budget stays in shape, and that businesses have the opportunity to be successful, and if people want a job, they can find a job."[10]

Sexton obtained a B.A. in public administration from the University of Tennessee. He has worked in sales and marketing.

Fiscal policy

Sexton was active in the effort to defeat a proposal for a state income tax several years ago and repeated his pledge when speaking to a local paper: “It seems that every few years, someone in Nashville attempts to enact a state income tax. I pledge to always work to defeat any proposal to enact a Tennessee state income tax.”

Economic development

Sexton's platform included continuing the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program, which provides low-interest loans to qualifying farmers. This is part of a broader plan to provide targeted incentives and capital investment for farmers. He also belongs to the Tennessee Farm Bureau.

Mr. Sexton more generally supported economic development that makes Tennessee a target to business, along with education and job training to make the state's work force more attractive to potential employers.

Social issues

A NRA member, Sexton supports Second Amendment rights. He is also pro-life.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Tennessee

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
