Karla Rose Hanson was first elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 2016, representing District 44 (north Fargo). Since then, she has advocated for policies that improve the quality of life in ND. She has sponsored bi-partisan legislation that improves access to health care – from better diabetes care to glasses & hearing aids for veterans. She provides leadership on issues like criminal justice reform and paid family leave. She is also a strong communicator, holding public forums with her two seat-mates and sending email updates during the fast-moving legislative sessions.
  • One of Karla's priorities is to improve access to health care. She will continue to support community-based behavioral health services, better drug prices and the renewal of Medicaid Expansion.
  • Another priority for Karla is to ensure a high-quality education from preK to K-12 to higher education. The state must strengthen funding for K-12 schools, which face challenges in teacher retention & student well-being.
  • Karla also believes we should build an economy that works for everyone. This includes addressing the daycare crisis by strengthening assistance for families & providers and creating a paid family leave program in ND.
Karla is passionate about ensuring access to affordable health care, ensuring high-quality education at every level, and building an economy that works for everyone with policies that help the vulnerable, families and small businesses.

Specifically, Karla has sponsored paid family leave legislation so people don't have to choose between their job/paycheck and caring for themselves or a loved one, and she has provided leadership on criminal justice reform efforts, including a pretrial pilot program that helps improve lives while saving money. She also sponsored and helped pass legislation to improve care for people with diabetes and a bill to help more veterans access hearing aids, glasses and dentures.
Communication skills are critical. Lawmakers need the ability to deeply listen to a variety of viewpoints, share the reasons for their final decision, and keep constituents updated on what happens during the fast-moving legislative sessions.
One of North Dakota's main challenges will be aligning the state budget with the state's needs. Ensuring a consistency in state services can be challenging when much of the state revenue is based on volatile prices in the energy and ag sectors.

Today, many workers can work from anywhere, so we should aim for North Dakota to be their home by choice and make appropriate investments to further that goal. The ND Legislature should use the state’s assets for affordable housing and high-quality public education, as well as accessible daycare & health care, making ND a more attractive place to live & work. The ND Legislature should also avoid passing extreme policies that make ND an unwelcoming place.
Lawmakers must be collaborators. Karla has built strong relationships with lawmakers from across ND with a wide range of political views. She finds common ground with her colleagues to craft solutions to the state’s problems.

Karla also seeks to understand the impact of policies through deep learning and relationship building. For example, as a ND House Judiciary committee member, Karla proactively meets with law enforcement, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, and corrections & parole officers, as well as offenders, victims and advocates.

Karla Rose Hanson has represented District 44 in the North Dakota House of Representatives since 2016. She provides strong leadership in the state legislature and is deeply engaged with her neighbors in north Fargo. Karla fights for safe and healthy neighborhoods and advocates for an economy that works for everyone. She's a strong advocate for health care, education and paid family leave. You can learn more about Karla and her work at karlarosehanson.com.
  • Safe and healthy neighborhoods are one of Karla's priorities. During her first term, Karla championed improvements to behavioral health services, passed a bill to assist veterans with health care, and wrote a bill to help prevent suicide and other gun violence. Going forward, improved access to affordable health care is necessary.
  • Karla will continue advocating for an economy that works for everyone. Karla sponsored a paid family leave policy so people don't have to choose between a paycheck and caring for a loved one. She co-sponsored the university research fund bill to help diversify our state's economy. Maintaining strong investments in education - from preK through higher education - will also be a priority.
  • Karla will continue to stay deeply engaged with her north Fargo neighbors. To better understand her constituent's priorities and listen to their feedback, she has held nearly two dozen public forums with her seatmates. They also send out regular newsletters with legislative and pandemic-related updates.
Karla has been especially engaged in suicide prevention policies, paid family leave and criminal justice reform.
Elected officials should be good listeners and strong communicators. They should have an open mind and be willing to hear about other view points as well as the research on an issue.
I am a good listener, I communicate with my constituents, I keep an open mind, and I research issues thoroughly.
Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" -- I watched the biopic "Rocket Man" a few days ago.
While previous experience with politics is certainly useful, it is more important for members of the state legislature to listen to their constituents so they represent their priorities.
Recovering from the impacts of the pandemic will be challenging - both in terms of ensuring a strong economy and addressing the inequities that the pandemic has laid bare. North Dakota needs strategies to help families and businesses thrive, protect the vulnerable, and lift people out of poverty - and those strategies should include health care, education and more.
Absolutely. Strong relationships are the key to understanding other viewpoints and developing policies that everyone can agree on.

2016

Hanson's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[6]

If elected, I will work to:
  • Fight for strong and safe neighborhoods as the state faces an increase of drug and property crimes. This includes addressing the state’s shortage of behavioral health and addiction services and fully supporting our first responders.
  • Increase opportunities for you to get ahead and stay ahead. Recent budget cuts to childcare and autism services put working parents in a bind - which further strains our workforce shortage. Instead of giving tax breaks to corporations in Oklahoma and Texas, I'll prioritize services that help families and property tax cuts for you.
  • Stand up for what's right by advocating for non-discrimination legislation and greater transparency in government through stronger campaign finance laws.[7]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in North Dakota

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
