Huffman began his legal career working in the State Attorney General's Office. He was the chief deputy district attorney for San Diego County from 1971 to 1981. From 1981 to 1985, he was the assistant district attorney. He was appointed to the Superior Court for San Diego County in 1985 and served on that court until his appointment to the California Fourth District Court of Appeal in 1988.[3][4]
