Noteworthy cases
Jussie Smollett disorderly conduct trial (2019)
Judge Watkins presided over the trial of Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who was charged in March 2019 by a grand jury with 16 counts of disorderly conduct on allegations he staged a phony attack on himself and claimed he was the victim of a hate crime. Smollett told police on January 28, 2019, that he was attacked by two men who poured chemicals on him and put a noose around his neck. On February 21, Smollett turned himself into police and admitted that the attack was a hoax.[8]
Cook County prosecutors ultimately dropped all charges against Smollett on March 26, 2019. "After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case," wrote the prosecutors in a statement. Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) called the action "a whitewash of justice."[9]
Judge Watkins ordered the public file to be sealed following the prosecution dropping its charges.[9]
