Noteworthy events
Arrest on federal fraud, theft charges (2024)
On December 6, 2024, Anderson was arrested on federal public corruption charges, including five counts of wire fraud and one count of theft from a program receiving federal funds.[1][2] During an appearance in Boston federal court, she pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released without bail.[2] Anderson is due back in court in early 2025.[3]
Following Anderson's arrest, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu called for her resignation. According to CBS News, Wu responded to the charges saying, "The serious nature of these charges undermine the public trust and will prevent her from effectively serving the city. I urge Councilor Fernandes Anderson to resign."[4]
On December 11, 2024, Anderson announced she would not resign.
"People have the right to their opinion but they should allow for the privilege everyone has to due process," Anderson said.[5]
