Yoda was a Jedi Master and member of the Jedi Council during the Old Republic, "before the dark times... before the empire."[1] During his tenure as a Jedi Master, Yoda was the main mentor to all young Jedi younglings, including, while in exile on Dagobah, hero of the Rebel Alliance, Luke Skywalker.[2]

Little is known about Yoda's early years. In his tenure as a Jedi Master, he served as Grand Master of the Jedi Council during the Galactic Republic. According to some reports, "before and during the Clone Wars, Yoda was one of the more powerful Jedi in the entire order." After initially denying Anakin Skywalker the opportunity to train as a Jedi under mentor Qui-Gon Jinn, Yoda allowed Jinn's apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi to train him following Jinn's death.[2][3]

During the Clone Wars, Qui-Gon Jinn contacted Yoda seemingly from beyond the grave to train Yoda to use the power of Force immortality, allowing a Jedi the ability to appear in ghost-like form after death. After failing to kill Chancellor Palpatine, once Palpatine revealed himself as a Sith Lord, during the final days of the Clone Wars, Yoda fled the captial system to enter exile in the swamps of Dagobah.[2]

Yoda remained on Dagobah for the remainder of his life, awaiting the opportunity to train the son of Anakin Skywalker. Eventually, Luke Skywalker, Anakin's son, came for training at the behest of Obi-Wan. Yoda taught Luke the ways of the Force and, upon Luke's second visit to Dagobah, gave Luke his final jedi training assignment: confronting Vader. He died peacefully in his home after revealing to Luke that there was, in fact, "another Skywalker."[2]

Yoda appeared again, as a Force ghost, at the celebration of the Rebel Alliance's victory over the Empire.
