2 “Send men to scout out the land of Canaan(A) I am giving to the Israelites. Send one man who is a leader among them from each of their ancestral tribes.”

2 Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.

2 (B)Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give to the sons of Israel; you shall send a man from each of their fathers’ tribes, every one a leader among them.”

2 "Send men to explore the land of Canaan that I'm about to give to the Israelis. Send one man to represent each of his ancestor's tribes, every one of them a distinguished leader among them."

The Spies' Instructions

17 When Moses sent them to scout out the land of Canaan, he told them, “Go up this way to the Negev, then go up into the hill country.

17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:

18 See what the land is like, and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many.

18 And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;

18 See what the land is like, and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many.

18 See what the land is like. Observe whether the people who live there are strong or weak, or whether they're few or numerous.

18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many,

19 Is the land they live in good(E) or bad? Are the cities they live in encampments or fortifications?(F)

19 And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;

19 How is the land in which they live, is it good or bad? And how are the cities in which they live, are they (d)like open camps or with fortifications?

19 Look to see whether the land where they live is good or bad, and whether the cities in which they live are merely tents or if they're fortified.

19 and whether the land in which they live is good or bad, and whether the cities in which they live are [open] camps or fortifications,

20 Is the land fertile or unproductive?(G) Are there trees in it or not? Be courageous. Bring back some fruit from the land.” It was the season for the first ripe grapes.(H)

20 And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.

The Spies' Activities

21 So they went up and scouted out the land from the Wilderness of Zin(a) as far as Rehob(b) near the entrance to Hamath.(c)

21 So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.

21 So they went up and spied out the land from (I)the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, (f)(J)at Lebo-hamath.

21 As it was, that time of year was the season for the first fruits of the grape harvest. So they went to explore the land from the Wilderness of Zin to Rehob, and as far as the outskirts of Hamath.

21 So they went up and spied out the land from the Wilderness of Zin to Rehob [a town in Lebanon], at Lebo-hamath [in the far north].

22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak,(I) were living. Hebron was built seven years before Zoan(J) in Egypt.

22 And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

22 When they had gone up into (K)the Negev, (g)they came to Hebron where (L)Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the (h)descendants of (M)Anak were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before (N)Zoan in Egypt.)

22 They went through the Negev and reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak lived. (Hebron had been constructed seven years before Zoan in Egypt had been built).

22 When they had gone up into the Negev (the South country), they came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai the descendants of Anak were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23 When they came to the Valley of Eshcol,(K) they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes, which was carried on a pole by two men. They also took some pomegranates and figs.(L)

23 And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

23 Then they came to the (i)valley of (j)(O)Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men, with some of the pomegranates and the figs.

23 Soon they arrived in the valley of Eshcol, where they cut a single branch of grapes and carried it on a pole between two men, along with some pomegranates and figs.

23 Then they came to the Valley of Eshcol (cluster of grapes), and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two of them, with some of pomegranates and the figs.

24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol(d) because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut there.

24 The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

24 The entire place was called the Eshcol Valley on account of the cluster of grapes that the men of Israel had taken from there.

24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol (cluster of grapes) because of the cluster of grapes which the sons of Israel cut down there.

25 And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

25 When they returned from spying out the land, at the end of forty days,

25 At the end of 40 days, they all returned from exploring the land,

25 When they returned from spying out the land, at the end of forty days,

Report About Canaan

26 The men went back to Moses, Aaron, and the entire Israelite community in the Wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. They brought back a report for them and the whole community, and they showed them the fruit of the land.(N)

26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.

26 they proceeded to come to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel (l)in the wilderness of Paran, at (P)Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land.

26 came in to Moses and Aaron, and delivered their report to the entire congregation of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. They brought back their report to the entire congregation and showed them the fruit of the land.

26 they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran at Kadesh, and brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the land’s fruit.

27 They reported to Moses: “We went into the land where you sent us. Indeed it is flowing with milk and honey,(O) and here is some of its fruit.

27 And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

27 Thus they told him, and said, “We went in to the land where you sent us; and (Q)it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and (R)this is its fruit.

27 "We arrived at the place where you've sent us," they reported, "and it certainly does flow with milk and honey. Furthermore, this is its fruit,

27 They reported to Moses and said, “We went in to the land where you sent us; and it certainly does (a)flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.

28 However, the people living in the land are strong, and the cities are large and fortified.(P) We also saw the descendants of Anak(Q) there.

28 Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

28 Nevertheless, (S)the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw (T)the (m)descendants of Anak there.

28 except that the people who have settled in the land are strong, and their cities are greatly fortified. We also saw the descendants of Anak.

28 But the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are (b)fortified (walled) and very large; moreover, we saw there the descendants of Anak [people of great stature and courage].

29 The Amalekites(R) are living in the land of the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan.”

29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.

29 Amalek is living in the land of (U)the Negev and the Hittites and the Jebusites and (V)the Amorites are living in the hill country, and (W)the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.”

29 Amalek lives throughout the Negev, while the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live by the sea and on the bank of the Jordan."

29 [The people descended from] Amalek live in the land of the Negev (South country); the Hittite, the Jebusite, and the Amorite live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the [Dead] Sea and along the side of the Jordan.”

30 Then Caleb(S) quieted the people in the presence of Moses and said, “We must go up and take possession of the land because we can certainly conquer it!”

30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

30 Then Caleb quieted the people (n)before Moses and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it.”

30 Caleb silenced the people on Moses' behalf and responded, "Let's go up and take control, because we can definitely conquer it."

30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession of it; for we will certainly conquer it.”

31 But the men who had gone up with him responded, “We can’t go up against the people because they are stronger than we are!”

31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “(X)We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us.”

31 "We can't attack those people," the men who were with him said, "because they're too strong compared to us."

31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people [of Canaan], for they are too strong for us.”

32 So they gave a negative report to the Israelites about the land they had scouted: “The land we passed through to explore is one that devours its inhabitants, and all the people we saw in it are men of great size.

32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

32 So they gave out to the sons of Israel (Y)a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone, in spying it out, is (Z)a land that devours its (o)inhabitants; and (AA)all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size.

32 So they put out this false report to the Israelis about the land that they had explored: "The land that we've explored is one that devours its inhabitants. All the people whom we observed were giants.

32 So they gave the Israelites a bad report about the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we went, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants. And all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature.

33 We even saw the Nephilim(e)(T) there—the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim!(U) To ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and we must have seemed the same to them.”

33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

33 There also we saw the (AB)Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and (AC)we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”

33 We also saw the Nephilim, the descendants of Anak. Compared to the Nephilim, as we see things, we're like grasshoppers, and that's their opinion of us!"

33 There we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
