1 Deliver me, God, because the waters are up to my neck.

1 Save me, O God,For the waters have threatened my life [they have come up to my neck].

2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

2 I have sunk in deep ()mire, and there is no foothold;I have come into deep waters, and a ()()flood overflows me.

2 I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing;I have come into deep waters,and a flood sweeps over me.()

2 I am sinking in deep mire, and there is no solid ground. I have come into deep water, and the flood overwhelms me.

3 I am weary of my crying: my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

4 They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.

4 Those who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head. My persecutors are mighty, and they want to destroy me. Must I be forced to return what I did not steal?

5 O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.

5 O God, it is You who knows ()my folly,And ()my wrongs are not hidden from You.

6 Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.

6 May those who wait for You not ()be ashamed through me, O Lord ()God of hosts;May those who seek You not be dishonored through me, O God of Israel,

6 Do not let those who put their hope in Yoube disgraced because of me,Lord God of Hosts;do not let those who seek Yoube humiliated because of me,God of Israel.()

6 Do not let those who look up to you be ashamed because of me, Lord God of the Heavenly Armies. Let not those who seek you be humiliated because of me, God of Israel.

6 Do not let those who wait [confidently] for You be ()ashamed through me, O Lord ()God of hosts;Do not let those who seek You [as necessary for life itself] be dishonored through me, O God of Israel,

7 Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame hath covered my face.

7 Because ()for Your sake I have borne reproach;()Dishonor has covered my face.

7 For I have endured insults because of You,and shame has covered my face.()

7 I am being mocked because of you. Dishonor overwhelms me.

7 Because for Your sake I have borne reproach;Confusion and dishonor have covered my face.

8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

9 Zeal for your house consumes me, and the mockeries of those who insult you fall on me.

10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

10 I mourned and fasted,but it brought me insults.()

10 I weep and fast, and I am mocked for it.

11 I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.

11 When I dressed in sackcloth, I became an object of gossip among them.

11 When I made sackcloth my clothing [as one in mourning],I became a byword [a mere object of scorn] to them.

12 They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

12 Those who ()sit in the gate talk about me,And I am the ()()song of the drunkards.

12 Those who sit at the city gate talk about me,and drunkards make up songs about me.()

12 The prominent people mock me, composing drinking songs.

12 They who sit in the [city’s] gate talk about me and mock me,And I am the song of the drunkards.

13 But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: O God, in the multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, ()at an acceptable time;O God, in the ()greatness of Your lovingkindness,Answer me with ()Your saving truth.

13 But as for me, Lord,my prayer to You is for a time of favor.In Your abundant, faithful love, God,answer me with Your sure salvation.()

13 As for me, LORD, may my prayer to you come at a favorable time. God, in the abundance of your gracious love, answer me with your sure deliverance.

13 But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord, at an acceptable and opportune time;O God, in the greatness of Your favor and in the abundance of Your lovingkindness,Answer me with truth [that is, the faithfulness of Your salvation].

14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

16 Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

16 Answer me, O Lord, for ()Your lovingkindness is good;()According to the greatness of Your compassion, ()turn to me,

21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

22 Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.

22 May ()their table before them become a snare;And ()()when they are in peace, may it become a trap.

22 May their dining tables entrap them, and become a snare for their allies.

22 May their table [with all its abundance and luxury] become a snare [to them];And when they are in peace [secure at their sacrificial feasts], may it become a trap.

23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.

23 May their eyes be blinded and may their bodies tremble continuously.

24 Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take hold of them.

27 Add iniquity unto their iniquity: and let them not come into thy righteousness.

27 Add guilt to their guilt;do not let them share in Your righteousness.()

27 May you punish them for their crimes; may they receive no verdict of innocence from you.

28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.

28 May they be ()blotted out of the ()book of lifeAnd may they not be ()()recorded with the righteous.

28 May they be erased from the Book of Life, and their names not be written with the righteous.

29 But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high.
