Psalm 78

² I will declare wise sayings;I will speak mysteries from the past^(C)—

² I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

² I will ^(C)open my mouth in a parable;I will utter ^(D)dark sayings of old,

² I will tell a parable, speaking riddles from long ago

² I will open my mouth in a parable [to instruct using examples];I will utter dark and puzzling sayings of old [that contain important truth]—^(A)

⁴ We must not hide them from their children,but must tell a future generationthe praises of the Lord,His might, and the wonderful worksHe has performed.^(E)

⁴ We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

⁴ We will ^(F)not conceal them from their children,But ^(G)tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,And His strength and His ^(H)wondrous works that He has done.

⁴ We will not withhold them from their descendants; we'll declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD his might and awesome deeds that he has performed.

⁴ We will not hide them from their children,But [we will] tell to the generation to come the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,And [tell of] His great might and power and the wonderful works that He has done.

⁶ so that a future generation—children yet to be born—might know.They were to rise and tell their children^(G)

⁶ That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

^{6 (M)}That the generation to come might know, even ^(N)the children yet to be born,That they may arise and ^(O)tell them to their children,

⁶ in order that the next generation children yet to be born will know them and in turn teach them to their children.

⁶ That the generation to come might know them, that the children still to be bornMay arise and recount them to their children,

⁸ Then they would not be like their fathers,a stubborn and rebellious generation,a generation whose heart was not loyaland whose spirit was not faithful to God.^(I)

⁸ And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

⁸ And ^(R)not be like their fathers,A ^(S)stubborn and rebellious generation,A generation that ^(T)did not ^(d)prepare its heartAnd whose spirit was not ^(U)faithful to God.

⁸ They will not be like the rebellious generation of their ancestors, a rebellious generation, whose heart was not steadfast, and whose spirits were unfaithful to God.

⁸ And not be like their fathers—A stubborn and rebellious generation,A generation that did not prepare its heart to know and follow God,And whose spirit was not faithful to God.

¹⁰ They did not keep God’s covenantand refused to live by His law.^(K)

¹⁰ They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

¹⁰ They ^(X)did not keep the covenant of GodAnd refused to ^(Y)walk in His law;

¹⁰ They did not keep God's covenant, and refused to live by his Law.

¹⁰ They did not keep the covenant of GodAnd refused to walk according to His law;

¹² He worked wonders in the sight of their fathersin the land of Egypt, the region of Zoan.^(M)

¹² Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

^{12 (AA)}He wrought wonders before their fathersIn the land of Egypt, in the ^(AB)field of Zoan.

¹² He performed marvelous things in the presence of their ancestors in the land of Egypt in the fields of Zoan.

¹² He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathersIn the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan [where Pharaoh resided].

¹⁴ He led them with a cloud by dayand with a fiery light throughout the night.^(O)

¹⁴ In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

¹⁴ Then He led them with the cloud by ^(AE)dayAnd all the night with a ^(AF)light of fire.

¹⁴ He led them with a cloud during the day, and during the night with light from the fire.

¹⁴ In the daytime He led them with a cloudAnd all the night with a light of fire.^(C)

¹⁶ He brought streams out of the stoneand made water flow down like rivers.^(Q)

¹⁶ He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

¹⁶ He brought streams from rock, causing water to flow like a river.

¹⁸ They deliberately^(a) tested God,demanding the food they craved.^(S)

¹⁸ And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

¹⁸ And in their heart they ^(AJ)put God to the testBy asking ^(AK)food according to their desire.

¹⁸ To test God was in their minds, when they demanded food to satisfy their cravings.

¹⁸ And in their hearts they put God to the testBy asking for food according to their [selfish] appetite.

²⁰ Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;torrents overflowed.^(T)But can He also provide breador furnish meat for His people?”^(U)

²⁰ Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

²⁰ “Behold, He ^(AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,And streams were overflowing;Can He give bread also?Will He provide ^(g)(AN)meat for His people?”

²⁰ It's true that Moses struck the rock so that water flowed forth and torrents of water gushed out, but is he also able to give bread or to supply meat for his people?"

²⁰ “Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed outAnd the streams overflowed;Can He give bread also?Or will He provide meat for His people?”

²² because they did not believe Godor rely on His salvation.^(W)

²² Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

²² Because they ^(AP)did not believe in GodAnd did not trust in His salvation.

²² because they didn't believe in God and didn't trust in his deliverance.

²² Because they did not believe in God [they did not rely on Him, they did not adhere to Him],And they did not trust in His salvation (His power to save).

²⁴ He rained manna for them to eat;He gave them grain from heaven.^(Y)

²⁴ And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

²⁴ He ^(AR)rained down manna upon them to eatAnd gave them ^(i)(AS)food from heaven.

²⁴ so that manna rained down on them for food and he sent them the grain of heaven.

²⁴ And He rained down manna upon them to eatAnd gave them the grain of heaven.^(E)

²⁶ He made the east wind blow in the skiesand drove the south wind by His might.^(AA)

²⁶ He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.

²⁶ He ^(AU)caused the east wind to blow in the heavensAnd by His ^(m)power He directed the south wind.

²⁶ He stirred up the east wind in the heavens and drove the south wind by his might.

²⁶ He caused the east wind to blow in the heavensAnd by His [unlimited] power He guided the south wind.

²⁸ He made them fall in His camp,all around His tent.^(d)(e)(AB)

²⁸ And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

²⁸ Then He let them fall in the midst of ^(o)their camp,Round about their dwellings.

²⁸ He caused these to fall in the middle of the camp and all around their tents.

²⁸ And He let them fall in the midst of their camp,Around their tents.

³⁰ Before they had satisfied their desire,while the food was still in their mouths,

³⁰ They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

³⁴ When He killed some of them,the rest began to seek Him;they repented and searched for God.^(AG)

³⁴ When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and inquired early after God.

³⁴ When He killed them, then they ^(BD)sought Him,And returned and searched ^(BE)diligently for God;

³⁴ When he struck them, they sought him; they repented, and eagerly sought God.

³⁴ When He killed [some of] them, then those remaining sought Him,And they returned [to Him] and searched diligently for God [for a time].

³⁶ But they deceived Him with their mouths,they lied to Him with their tongues,^(AI)

³⁶ Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

³⁶ But they ^(BH)deceived Him with their mouthAnd ^(BI)lied to Him with their tongue.

³⁶ But they deceived him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.

³⁶ Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouthsAnd lied to Him with their tongues.

³⁸ Yet He was compassionate;He atoned for^(f) their guiltand did not destroy them.He often turned His anger asideand did not unleash^(g) all His wrath.^(AK)

³⁸ But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

³⁸ But He, being ^(BK)compassionate, ^(t)(BL)forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them;And often He ^(u)(BM)restrained His angerAnd did not arouse all His wrath.

³⁸ But he, being merciful, forgave their iniquity and didn't destroy them; He restrained his anger and didn't vent all his wrath.

^{38 (a)}But He, the source of compassion and lovingkindness, forgave their wickedness and did not destroy them;Many times He restrained His angerAnd did not stir up all His wrath.

⁴⁰ How often they rebelled against Himin the wildernessand grieved Him in the desert.

⁴⁰ How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!

⁴⁰ How often they ^(BQ)rebelled against Him in the wildernessAnd ^(BR)grieved Him in the ^(BS)desert!

⁴⁰ How they rebelled against him in the desert, grieving him in the wilderness!

⁴² They did not remember His power shownon the day He redeemed them from the foe,^(AO)

⁴² They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.

⁴² They did not remember his power the day he delivered them from their adversary,

⁴² They did not remember [the miracles worked by] His [powerful] hand,Nor the day when He redeemed them from the enemy,

⁴⁴ He turned their rivers into blood,and they could not drink from their streams.^(AQ)

⁴⁴ And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.

⁴⁴ And ^(CA)turned their rivers to blood,And their streams, they could not drink.

⁴⁸ He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.

⁴⁸ He gave over their ^(CG)cattle also to the hailstonesAnd their herds to bolts of lightning.

⁴⁸ He delivered their beasts to hail and their livestock to lightning bolts.

⁴⁸ He gave over their cattle also to the hailstones,And their flocks and herds to thunderbolts.^(I)

⁵⁰ He cleared a path for His anger.He did not spare them from deathbut delivered their lives to the plague.^(AW)

⁵⁰ He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;

⁵⁰ He leveled a path for His anger;He did not spare their soul from death,But ^(CI)gave over their life to the plague,

⁵⁰ He blazed a path for his anger; he did not stop short from killing them, but handed them over to pestilence.

⁵⁰ He leveled a path for His anger [to give it free run];He did not spare their souls from death,But turned over their lives to the plague.

⁵² He led His people out like sheepand guided them like a flock in the wilderness.^(AZ)

⁵² But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

⁵² But He ^(CM)led forth His own people like sheepAnd guided them in the wilderness ^(CN)like a flock;

⁵² Yet he led out his people like sheep, guiding them like a flock in the desert.

⁵² But God led His own people forward like sheepAnd guided them in the wilderness like [a good shepherd with] a flock.

⁵⁴ He brought them to His holy land,to the mountain His right hand acquired.^(BB)

⁵⁴ And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

⁵⁴ So ^(CQ)He brought them to His holy ^(aa)land,To this ^(ab)(CR)hill country ^(CS)which His right hand had gained.

⁵⁴ He brought the people to the border of his holy mountain, which he acquired by his might.

⁵⁴ So He brought them to His holy land,To this mountain [Zion] which His right hand had acquired.

⁵⁶ But they rebelliously tested the Most High God,for they did not keep His decrees.^(BE)

⁵⁶ Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

⁵⁶ Yet they ^(ac)(CV)tempted and ^(CW)rebelled against the Most High GodAnd did not keep His testimonies,

⁵⁶ But they tested the Most High God by rebelling against him, and they did not obey his statutes.

⁵⁶ Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High GodAnd did not keep His testimonies (laws).

⁵⁸ They enraged Him with their high placesand provoked His jealousy with their carved images.^(BG)

⁵⁸ For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

⁵⁸ For they ^(CZ)provoked Him with their ^(DA)high placesAnd ^(DB)aroused His jealousy with their ^(DC)graven images.

⁵⁸ they angered him with their high places and with their carved images they made him jealous.

⁵⁸ For they provoked Him to [righteous] anger with their high places [devoted to idol worship]And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images [by denying Him the love, worship, and obedience that is rightfully and uniquely His].

⁶⁰ He abandoned the tabernacle at Shiloh,the tent where He resided among men.^(j)(BI)

⁶⁰ So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

⁶⁰ So that He ^(DF)abandoned the ^(DG)dwelling place at Shiloh,The tent ^(ae)which He had pitched among men,

⁶⁰ He abandoned the tent at Shiloh, the tent that he established among mankind.

⁶⁰ So that He abandoned the tabernacle at Shiloh,The tent in which He had dwelled among men,

⁶² He surrendered His people to the swordbecause He was enraged with His heritage.^(BK)

⁶² He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

⁶² He also ^(DJ)delivered His people to the sword,And ^(af)was filled with wrath at His inheritance.

⁶² He delivered his people over to the sword and was angry with his possession.

⁶² He also handed His people over to the sword,And was infuriated with His inheritance (Israel).^(M)

⁶⁴ His priests fell by the sword,but the^(m) widows could not lament.^(n)(BM)

⁶⁴ Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

^{64 (ai)}His ^(DM)priests fell by the sword,And ^(aj)His ^(DN)widows could not weep.

⁶⁴ The priests fell by the sword, yet their widows couldn't weep.

⁶⁴ His priests [Hophni and Phinehas] fell by the sword,And His widows could not weep.^(N)

⁶⁶ He beat back His foes;He gave them lasting shame.^(BO)

⁶⁶ And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

⁶⁶ He ^(al)(DQ)drove His adversaries backward;He put on them an everlasting reproach.

⁶⁶ He beat back his adversaries, permanently disgracing them.

⁶⁶ He drove His enemies backward;He subjected them to lasting shame and dishonor.

⁶⁸ He chose instead the tribe of Judah,Mount Zion, which He loved.^(BP)

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
