1 Listen, O my people, to my teaching;Incline your ears to the words of my mouth [and be willing to learn].

2 I will declare wise sayings;I will speak mysteries from the past(C)

2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

2 I will tell a parable, speaking riddles from long ago

2 I will open my mouth in a parable [to instruct using examples];I will utter dark and puzzling sayings of old [that contain important truth]—(A)

4 We must not hide them from their children,but must tell a future generationthe praises of the Lord,His might, and the wonderful worksHe has performed.(E)

4 We will not withhold them from their descendants; we'll declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD his might and awesome deeds that he has performed.

5 He established a testimony in Jacoband set up a law in Israel,which He commanded our fathersto teach to their children(F)

5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

6 so that a future generation—children yet to be born—might know.They were to rise and tell their children(G)

8 They will not be like the rebellious generation of their ancestors, a rebellious generation, whose heart was not steadfast, and whose spirits were unfaithful to God.

8 And not be like their fathers—A stubborn and rebellious generation,A generation that did not prepare its heart to know and follow God,And whose spirit was not faithful to God.

9 The Ephraimite archers turned backon the day of battle.(J)

9 The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.

9 The sons of Ephraim (e)were (V)archers equipped with bows,Yet (W)they turned back in the day of battle.

9 The descendants of Ephraim were sharp shooters with the bow, but they retreated in the day of battle.

10 They did not keep God’s covenantand refused to live by His law.(K)

10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

19 They spoke against God by asking, "Is God able to prepare a feast in the desert?

19 Then they spoke against God;They said, “Can God prepare [food for] a table in the wilderness?

20 Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out;torrents overflowed.(T)But can He also provide breador furnish meat for His people?”(U)

20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

20 “Behold, He (AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,And streams were overflowing;Can He give bread also?Will He provide (g)(AN)meat for His people?”

20 It's true that Moses struck the rock so that water flowed forth and torrents of water gushed out, but is he also able to give bread or to supply meat for his people?"

21 Therefore, the Lord heard and became furious;then fire broke out against Jacob,and anger flared up against Israel(V)

21 Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

23 He gave a command to the clouds aboveand opened the doors of heaven.(X)

23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,

57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

57 They fell away and were as disloyal as their ancestors. They became unreliable, like a defective bow;

58 They enraged Him with their high placesand provoked His jealousy with their carved images.(BG)

58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

58 For they (CZ)provoked Him with their (DA)high placesAnd (DB)aroused His jealousy with their (DC)graven images.

58 they angered him with their high places and with their carved images they made him jealous.

58 For they provoked Him to [righteous] anger with their high places [devoted to idol worship]And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images [by denying Him the love, worship, and obedience that is rightfully and uniquely His].

59 God heard and became furious;He completely rejected Israel.(BH)
