and said to Him, “Do You hear what these children are saying?”

“Yes,” Jesus told them. “Have you never read:

You have prepared praise
from the mouths of children and nursing infants?”

An infant will play beside the cobra’s pit,
and a toddler will put his hand into a snake’s den.

Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant.

The fatherless infant is snatched from the breast;
the nursing child of the poor is seized as collateral.

In her, a nursing infant will no longer live
only a few days,
or an old man not live out his days.
Indeed, the youth will die at a hundred years,
and the one who misses a hundred years will be cursed.

When a woman is in labor she has pain because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world.

Abram’s wife Sarai had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar.

Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days, for there will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.

They said to him, “This is what Hezekiah says: ‘Today is a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace, for children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.

Abraham and Sarah were old and getting on in years. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.
