then I will say to my soul, soul, you have many enjoyments in reserve for a number of years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
but imitate the example of those who by faith and patience have obtain'd the inheritance that was promis'd to them.
Take care that you be not deaf to him that speaketh: for if they did not escape, who disregarded the oracles pronounc'd on earth, much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him that delivered the oracles from heaven:
we have it from all quarters, that incest is practis'd among you, and such as is not among the Gentiles, that of a man's having his father's wife. this you have made a matter of levity, instead of being concern'd in discarding him that has done such an action.
but every one that heareth these instructions of mine, and practiseth them not, shall be compared to a fool who built his house upon the sand:
but instead of showing any regard, they went their ways, one to his farm, another to his traffick.
Peter thereupon said, tho' all the rest should abandon you, I never will.
but the servant, who knows his master's will, and prepares not himself, nor executes his orders, shall receive many stripes. whereas he that does not know it, and does things worthy of chastisement, shall receive fewer stripes. for to whom much is given, of him shall much be required, and the more a man has been trusted, the greater will be the demand.
but they were all of a mind in making some excuse: the first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, which I must needs go and see: therefore pray excuse me.
You have already a sufficiency, you already abound, you live like princes in our absence: and would to God you did reign, that we too might have the advantage of your administration.
I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. but since thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. you say you are rich, and have increased your gain, and have need of nothing; but you do not consider that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.
Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; bring yourselves to the proof; are you so little acquainted with yourselves, as not to know whether Jesus Christ be in you? but if you are destitute of proofs,
wherefore let him that thinks he stands firm, take heed lest he fall.
how shall we escape, if we neglect that salutary doctrine? which was first published by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those that heard him;
