If you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with his heart and is justified, and declares with his mouth and is saved.

"But I tell you, the Son of Man will acknowledge before God's angels everyone who acknowledges me before people. But whoever denies me before people will be denied before God's angels.

"Come to me, all of you who are weary and loaded down with burdens, and I will give you rest. Place my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest for your souls, because my yoke is pleasant, and my burden is light."

So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you must also wash one another's feet. I've set an example for you, so that you may do as I have done to you.

This is how we can be sure that we have come to know him: if we continually keep his commandments. The person who says, "I have come to know him," but does not continually keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth has no place in that person. The person who keeps his commandments abides in God, and God abides in him. This is how we can be sure that he remains in us: he has given us his Spirit.

Of course, none of you should suffer for being a murderer, thief, criminal, or troublemaker. But if you suffer for being a Christian, do not feel ashamed, but glorify God with that name. For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God. And if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who refuse to obey the gospel of God?
