For his watchmen are all blind, they have altogether no understanding. They are all dumb dogs, no being able to bark; they are sleepery, sluggish, and lie snorting.
Of this be sure, that if the good man of the house knew what hour the thief would come: he would surely watch, and not suffer his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready, for in the hour ye think least on, in the same ye think he would not: will the son of man come.
This shall ye understand, that if the good man of the house knew what hour the thief would have come, he would surely have watched: and not suffer his house to be broken up. Be ye prepared therefore, for the son of man will come at a hour when ye think not."
Watch, therefore, for ye know not when the master of the house will come: whether at even, or at midnight; whether at the cock crowing, or in the dawning: lest if he come suddenly, he should find you sleeping.
When they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, "Well spake the holy ghost by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, saying, 'Go unto this people and say: with your ears shall ye hear, and shall not understand: and with your eyes shall ye see and shall not perceive. For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears were thick of hearing, and their eyes have they closed, lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and should be converted, and I should heal them.'
And so he said, "Go, and tell this people: 'Ye shall hear indeed, but ye shall not understand; ye shall plainly see, and not perceive. Harden the heart of this people, stop their ears, and shut their eyes, that they see not with their eyes, hear not with their ears, and understand not with their heart, and convert and be healed."
Yea, thou shalt be as though thou slept in the midst of the sea, or on the top of the mast of a ship. "They wounded me," shalt thou say, "but it hath not hurt me. They smote me, but I felt it not. When I am well awakened, I will go to the drink again."
according as it is written, "God hath given them the spirit of unquietness: eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, even unto this day."
For the LORD shall give you a hard-sleeping spirit, and close your eyes. Your Prophets also, and heads which should see; them shall he cover.
This also we know, I mean the season: how that it is time that we should now awake out of sleep. For now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is past and the day is come nigh. Let us therefore cast away the deeds of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Be sober, and watch. For your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
And so will not we go back from thee; O let us live, and we shall call upon thy name.
Wilt thou not turn again, and quicken us, that thy people may rejoice in thee?
So the LORD awakened as one out of sleep, and like a giant refreshed with wine.
