be then upon the watch, and remember, that for three years I have not ceased by night, or by day to warn every soul of you, even with tears.
So when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of Jonas, do you love me more than these do? yes, Lord, said he, you know that I love you. If you represent these things to the brethren, you will appear to be a true minister of Jesus Christ, brought up in the institutions of faith, and the true doctrine to which you were attach'd.
For there are many, especially among the Jews, who are obstinate, vain talkers and deceivers; who ought to be curb'd, who pervert whole families, teaching things which they ought not, for sordid lucre.
and seeing one of them abus'd, he defended him, and avenged the injury by killing the Egyptian:
Confide in your guides, and be respectful: that they who are vigilant, as being accountable for your souls, may discharge themselves with cheerfulness, and not with anxiety, which would be to your prejudice.
to exhort you to feed the flock of God, which is among you: to take care of it, voluntarily, without reluctance, not from any view to sordid gain, but out of real affection;
only conduct yourselves in a manner becoming the gospel of Christ, that whether I come to see you, or else am absent, I may have this account of you, that you are stedfastly of the same resolution, and unanimously contend for the faith of the gospel, without being under any the least apprehension from your adversaries: this will be to them a sign of their ruin, and to you of salvation, by the divine appointment.
be stedfast therefore, and firmly maintain the doctrine I have delivered to you, either by word of mouth, or by my letter.
Keep that form of sound doctrine you receiv'd from me, which consists in christian faith and charity: that valuable depositum do you preserve by the holy spirit, which resides in us.
At my departure from Macedonia, I advised you to stay at Ephesus in order to charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, or trouble their heads with fables and endless genealogies, which rather promote disputes than the gospel-dispensation: such a charge will produce that charity, which arises from purity, from a good conscience, and a sincere belief:read more.

one of their own prophets said, "the Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, slow bellies." the charge is true: wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they maybe sound in the faith; not doating on Jewish Fables, and the tenets of men, that deviate from the truth.
those preach the gospel of Christ, not in sincerity, but from a principle of contention, with a view to inflame the persecution against me:
Now Stephen full of grace and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. when some out of the several synagogues, belonging to the freed men, to the Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and to those of Cilicia, and of Asia, came to dispute with Stephen. but as they were not able to withstand the force of that sublime knowledge which appeared in his discourse,

from me, who called you by the grace of Christ; this can be owing to nothing but your being practised upon by some, who would overturn the gospel of Christ. but tho' I, or an angel from heaven should preach any thing to you for gospel, different from the gospel I have preached unto you, let him be accursed.read more.
as I said before, so say I now again, if any one preach any other thing to you for gospel, than what you have received, let him be accursed.
But when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, for he was to be blamed. for till certain Jews came thither from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, for fear of those, who were for circumcision: and the rest of the Jews dissembled likewise with him, insomuch that Barnabas himself was carried away with their hypocrisy.read more.
but when I saw, they conformed not their conduct to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all: if you being a Jew, live after the manner of the Gentiles, and not according to that of the Jews, why do you constrain the Gentiles to judaize?
I should have this opinion of you, being sensible you make the dispensation I am under a common concern, with respect to my confinement, and the defence and confirmation of the gospel.
