hey all you birdie people! I’d like to share with you the importance and the benefits of foraging for your little feathered friends!

In the wild, your bird would get all of its food from foraging. They forage through grass, bushes, trees, and dirt to get what they need to survive, and if they live in a cage.. they will always find it in a silver platter right where it always is, which can make it boring and uninteresting for them.

I switch the toys and perches in my cages once a week, whenever I deep clean, and always move the food and water bowls… but I also hide Nutriberries and Millet all over the cage for them to find in special places. On the top you will see a little DIY easy foraging thing for bird who have really never foraged before. I like to do this for my Dory, who is new to foraging and isn’t as involved as Nash is at this stage. I get some stuffing paper and put her pellets in there, then I wrap it up, and put it upside-down in her bowl. This will force her to rip through the paper in order to get the food.

For Nash, I get these cute little toys that have boxes filled with confetti paper inside and I put 2-3 toys in his cage at a time. The bottom left picture is a side by side of what he does in a week with them. I fill them all with something different, and usually one toy is dedicated to fruits or veggies for the day ( always take out uneaten veggies within 6 hours ). Nash spends a lot of the day foraging in these toys by ripping apart the boxes and finding the seeds, treats, fruits, or pellets from within the confetti. I do still offer him pellets in his bowl the same way I do Dory, but Nash really prefers to find it himself. He chooses to do this!

Foraging really gets their brains going, and attaches them to their wild instincts.. Remember, parrots are not domesticated. They are still wild animals at heart.  Treat them and respect them as such(:
