This Mar 2-4 is shaping up to be one of Bangkok's biggest-ever food weekends when Mad Face Food Week 2018 sets up shop at the Sermsuk Warehouse, Pepsi Pier. It's brought to you by the same crew behind last month’s Made by Legacy at the same location. This time, BK is getting involved in the action. Here’s why you should get excited:
1. Food stalls from the best venues in town
Most of the event’s real estate is dedicated to around 40 or so food stalls—featuring names like 100 Mahaseth, Jua and Broken Eggs. The dishes here are all-original, too, with each vendor offering just one or two dishes. Some of the vendors are also making ad-hoc “zones,” complete with their own music, look and vibe. Some stalls to look out for: Chalee Kader of 100 Mahaseth, who’s promising super-spicy Northern sausage hot dogs; Chet Adkins of Jua, whose leaving Japan for California and an In-N-Out-inspired “Smash Burger”; and Jacobo Astray from Broken Eggs, who’ll be turning chicken green curry into ice cream.
2. Tons of foodie films and shorts
During the day, head to Mad Face’s Screening Room area to kick back and soak up some food-related documentaries, short films and video excerpts (from 3-6pm each day). So, get some frosty drinks, kick back, and absorb some food knowledge while recuperating for round-two.
3. Private dinners with Bangkok's best chefs
At 7pm each night, the screening room space turns into a private dining area home to three special dinners hosted by some of Bangkok’s most innovative food figures. Catch Joke Pairoj of Seven Spoons on Friday Mar 2 (hosted by Chang), Top Russell from Freebird on Saturday Mar 3 (hosted by Made By Legacy) and Garima Arora from Gaa on Sunday Mar 4 (hosted by BK Magazine).
4. Pop-up Restaurants
One of the most interesting parts of this year’s festival is a showdown between two of Bangkok’s most interesting food collectives. It’s not a straight competition, more a friendly rivalry. Over the course of the festival, two culinary all-star teams will curate special pop-up food experiences—complete with new dishes, entertaining concepts and chill beats to match.
Who’s on deck? Under the banner of the “Big Boys of Downtown,” Jarrett Wrisley (Appia, Peppina and Soul Food) and Paolo Vitaletti (Appia and Peppina) team up to recreate their highly anticipated “Appia Guest List” dinners with a secret group of chef collaborators. On the other side, the Old Town Revivalists, featuring Joe Jantraget (80/20), Van Rohitratana (Rarb), Noom Triyasenawat (Samuay & Sons) and Black Bulsuwan (Blackitch)—the people behind the F*cking Chefs crew—team up with Charlie Boonyavinij of Uncle Ree's Farm to create a daily-rotating menu.
5. Plain old good music
A good mix of local and international acts promises the keep the atmosphere at Mad Face fresh and exciting all weekend long. Live bands and DJ sets set the tone for long, leisurely afternoons (and nights) of eating, drinking, dancing and more eating. The two pop-up restaurants are playing a part here, too. The Big Boys of Downtown will be cooking and grooving to a mix of jazz, hip hop, funk, house and old-school rock tunes, while the Old Town Revivalists kitchen will kick it to blues, reggae, dub sounds and some Studio Lam selections.
Mad Face Food Week kicks off Mar 2-4 2018, Pepsi Pier, Soi Charoennakorn 13.
