History

Established in 1947 at Garth House as the Holy Spirit Hospital, the Holy Spirit Sisters founded the hospital with a mission to serve the community.
Growing to over 100 beds through the 1950s and 1960s, in 1965 Garth House and it’s neighboring nineteenth century houses that initially sat a top Wickham Terrace were gradually demolished to make way for a modern Holy Spirit Hospital (H.S.H).
In 2003, the Holy Spirit Hospital was acquired by Queensland Private Hospitals Ltd. and renamed Brisbane Private Hospital and subsequently acquired by Healthscope in 2007.
The hospital has experienced multiple expansions including the addition of the Arnold Janssen Centre in 1990, the expansion of the Damascus Health Unit into a 44 bed rehab and recovery unit in 2018 and multiple theatre expansions into the now 17 theatre facility.
The iconic fence featured in the photo was retained after the
three nineteenth century grand residences were demolished.
