Reason: Shadow Lugia and Bonsly menu sprites, unused map images, a recent deviantart blog revealed A LOT of unused content left in the game.
For the demo, demo quotes.

This article lists the unused content of the Generation III side series game Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness that has been discovered by data-mining the ROMs.

Pre-release

Demo release

On Interactive Multi Game Demo Disc 31, 32, and 33, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is one of the playable demos on all three demo discs.

The demo has the player starting off in the Cipher Key Lair with Professor Krane and Aidan both explaining the mechanics of what a Shadow Pokémon is and how to catch one using the Snag Machine. Aidan encourages Michael to use his Parasect's move Spore in order to make a Shadow Pokémon easier to catch.

Zook walks down the stairs while yelling that intruding is rude and wrong to Michael. They engage in battle. Of interest, in this battle, Zook uses a Shadow Shellder. In the final game, Cipher Peon Gorog is the one who has Shadow Shellder instead.

Michael also has a different team. His team consists of Gardevoir and Parasect, both of whom have pre-evolutions which can be caught in the final game. Their menu text indicates they were traded to Michael rather than having been caught in-game.

If the player attempts to use the SAVE option in the menu, a message will display stating it is not possible to save the game currently.

Additionally, Michael starts with 20 Hyper Potions, 10 Full Heals, 5 Revives, and 20 Ultra Balls in his Bag.

If Michael loses to Zook, the demo automatically ends.

After defeating Zook, Michael enters the lair while Krane and Aidan warn him to be careful and stating the place is dangerous. The Cipher Key Lair plays no music and only two NPCs are present to block off stairs on the left side of the room. However, he can find three Hyper Potions and two Revives inside, in the same locations as in the final game. Upon trying to enter the stairs on the right side, Michael is ambushed by Spy Targ. Her team only consists of her Shadow Butterfree and Shadow Tangela, both of which are present in the final game. The rest of her team is not present in the demo. After defeating Targ, Krane comes down the stairs and tells Michael they should leave immediately.

The demo then ends and congratulates the player for catching the Shadow Pokémon and says that Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness will be releasing on October 3, 2005.

Post-release

Early first Pokémon

Within the files for Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, there is data for a level 26 Jolteon and level 30 Vaporeon meant to be used as the player's first Pokémon, but they are unused. Their pages state that they were received from Michael's dad.

Unused Pokémon

Bonsly and Munchlax both have partial data in the game. Bonsly has no move data and trying to load Strategy Memo information on Munchlax will cause the game to softlock.

Abilities

An Ability known as Cacophony was found within the internal data. No Pokémon has it legitimately; a Pokémon can only have this Ability by modifying its data. It is identical to Soundproof, another sound-based Ability, and it allows the Pokémon to avoid all sound-based moves. Since it is identical to Soundproof, it was likely scrapped due to redundancy, and some Pokémon that have Soundproof may have originally been intended to have Cacophony instead, such as Loudred and Exploud, which are well known for their loudness.

Unused Battle CDs

There are three sets of unused Battle CDs with different effects when the players tries to boot them up.

Battle CDs 51-55

Battle CDs 51 through 55 are all the same and give the same effect when the player tries to boot them up. The CDs have no title, no description, and there are no Pokémon or Trainers present on the CDs. Booting up one of the CDs will show Pyrite Colosseum for a brief moment with the Battle CD intro being used. Right as the battle starts, an unknown player will white out and the battle will end immediately with a FAILED message being displayed. Interestingly, booting up any of the 50 Battle CDs will cause this set of Battle CDs to be registered as having been completed despite no battle taking place.

Battle CDs 56-60

This set of Battle CDs are duplicates of the first five Battle CDs and will play out those battles as if they were the actual first five Battle CDs.

Battle CD 00

Battle CD 00 is a copy of the Salamence vs. Metagross Battle CD used for the intro to the story. However, the only way to get this Battle CD to appear on the Battle CD list is to move the file named battle_disk.fsys to before the title screen files. Attempting to boot up this Battle CD will cause the game to softlock on a black screen.

Unused Pokémon Menu Graphics

Shadow Lugia and Bonsly both have two copies of the same menu sprite.

Shadow Lugia has a secondary menu placeholder icon meant for Shiny Pokémon that is an exact copy of its normal menu icon. When encountered or sent out, despite no change in appearance; Shadow Lugia will display the Shiny Pokémon encounter entrance. Once purified, Shadow Lugia if it was Shiny will display as a regular Shiny Lugia.

Bonsly cannot be legitimately in the player character's party and cannot be Shiny but has two menu sprites like Shadow Lugia does.[1]

Unused map descriptions

Some places in the game contain unused map descriptions in the game data.

Location Description
The Under "An abandoned underground town."
Dark Colosseum* "A Colosseum built on Citadark Isle."

Unobtainable Shiny Celebi

For the sake of consistency and to prevent game crashes if they are hacked into the game, every Pokémon has a Shiny variant. However, as Celebi was distributed only through the Japanese Pokémon Colosseum bonus disc and locked to never be Shiny, it is impossible to legitimately obtain a Shiny Celebi.

Unobtainable items

Main article: List of unobtainable items → In XD

Pokémon XD contains an unused key and several unfinished or unused Battle CDs. There are also some items that have descriptions but no legitimate way to be hacked into the game as models or sprites for the items were never made meaning they were very likely scrapped very early in the development of the game.

Unused maps

There are a few areas in the game data that either act as spawn locations or go completely unused.

B1

B1 is a map not called for or used anywhere within the game but looks very similar to the rooms of the S.S. Libra. The player character spawns in the center of the room. If a player jumps off the ledge, no jumping animation is played and Wes immediately teleports straight to the floor. There is no way to exit the room and no music plays.

tv_test

This map spawns the player in front of the jukebox inside the Outskirt Stand. No music plays, all NPCs are absent, no events occur, and there is no way to exit the area.

Debug Mode

Through the use of an Action Replay, it is possible to get Debug Mode to work again. Pressing up on the D-Pad brings up a bar at the top of the screen with instruction in Japanese on how to use the Debug Mode tools. Pressing L or Z cycles the game through Pause (instant stop), Slow (low frame rate), and Play (regular gameplay).
