Student Editorial Board

CHARM projects and publications are led by a dynamic student editorial board made up of 20 middle and high school students from across Baltimore. The board produces a variety of publication projects, including print anthologies and online publications that celebrate and amplify the voices of Baltimore youth. Editorial positions are paid, and we offer team leader, editor, and junior editor roles on two teams: Journalism and Publications.

School Literary Magazines

CHARM’s School-Based Literary Magazine Clubs provide middle and high school students with a meaningful and interactive way to engage in the writing and publishing process. Serving as editorial board members, students take the lead in selecting themes, reviewing submissions, and collaborating with professional graphic designers to bring their literary magazine vision to life. Each magazine is a collection of poems, short stories, artwork, and other creative pieces contributed by members of the school community. Through writing, editing, critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, and project management, students develop essential skills while amplifying their young voices. The club culminates in a launch event where the final publication is unveiled and celebrated with the school community.

Workshops & FIeld Trips

Whether virtual or in-person, our workshops invite students to learn how real writers and artists approach their craft, as well as connect with peers from around the city who share their passion for the literary arts. These sessions are opportunities for youth to develop their writing skills through engaging, small-group sessions with local authors, artists, and educators including writers D. Watkins, Sheri Booker, Hena Khan, Elissa Brent Weissman, and Erica L. Green.

SUMMER PUBLISHING INTERNSHIP

This five week internship expands and deepens what we do during the school year, and builds bridges within Baltimore’s rich publishing and media landscape. We launched our inaugural cohort of Summer Publishing Interns in summer 2022, and it consisted of 15 high schoolers and early college students. Interns were placed at eight local publishing, media, and bookstore sites across Baltimore: The Baltimore Banner, The AFRO News, Hopkins Press, CHARM, The Ivy Bookshop, Greedy Reads, Urban Reads, and Charm City Books.

PARTNERSHIPS

We are proud to partner with organizations that share our passion for celebrating and amplifying youth voices. Our editors have supported several organizations to publish printed anthologies, including Baltimore City Public Schools' BMore Me Initiative, Dewmore Baltimore and the Baltimore Youth Poet Laureate Competition, and two classrooms in Baltimore City public schools for our 2019 Class Book Project. We’ve partnered with the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Healing City Baltimore, The Ivy Bookshop, Maryland Institute College of Art, Maryland Writing Project, and Teach for America to offer programming aimed at supporting young creatives and amplifying youth voices.
