Service-life

In order to maintain high energy efficiency and ensure a long service life of the materials of construction in the combustion chamber, turbine and jet nozzle, a clean burning flame must be obtained that minimizes the heat exchange by radiation and limits the formation of carbon deposits. These qualities are determined by two procedures that determine respectively the smoke point and the luminometer index. [Pg.226]

For example, in the case of light Arabian crude (Table 8.16), the sulfur content of the heavy gasoline, a potential feedstock for a catalytic reforming unit, is of 0.036 weight per cent while the maximum permissible sulfur content for maintaining catalyst service life is 1 ppm. It is therefore necessary to plan for a desulfurization pretreatment unit. Likewise, the sulfur content of the gas oil cut is 1.39% while the finished diesel motor fuel specification has been set for a maximum limit of 0.2% and 0.05% in 1996 (French specifications). The suggested method is appropriately implemented at the practice. The cost and working hours of unit measurement of it is less than of any alternative method of destructive test and with respect to the authenticity inspection of Stress-Deformation the given method is inferior only to destructive testing. Economic Considerations. Tetrabasic Lead Sulfate. Tetrabasic lead sulfate [12065-90-6] 4PbO PbSO, mol wt 1196.12, sp gr 8.15, is made by fusion of stoichiometric quantities of Htharge (PbO) and lead sulfate (PbSO heat of formation, Ai/ = — 1814 kJ/mol (—434.1 kcal/mol). Alternatively, tetrabasic lead sulfate may be prepared by boiling the components in aqueous suspensions. At about 70°C, tribasic hydrate reacts with lead oxide to form tetrabasic sulfate. At 80°C, this transformation is complete in - 20 hours. Tetrabasic lead sulfate is used in limited quantities in Europe as a PVC stabilizer. However, in the United States, lead-acid batteries have been developed by BeU Telephone Laboratories, which contain tetrabasic lead sulfate. Such batteries are used for emergency power at telephone switchboard stations and have an anticipated service life of over 50 years. [Pg.70]

The most effective specification is that which accomplishes the desired result with the fewest requirements. Properties and performance should be emphasized rather than how the objectives ate to be achieved. Excessive demonstration of emdition on the part of the writer or failure to recognize the usually considerable processing expertise held by the vendor results in a lengthy and overly detailed document that generally is counterproductive. Redundancy may lead to technical inconsistency. A requirement that cannot be assessed by a prescribed test method or quantitative inspection technique never should be included in the specifications. Wherever possible, tests should be easy to perform and highly correctable with service performance. Tests that indicate service life are especially useful. Standard test references, eg, ASTM methods, ate the most desirable, and those that ate needed should be selected carefully and the numbers of such references should be minimized. To eliminate unnecessary review activity by the would-be complier, the description of a standard test should not be paraphrased or condensed unless the original test is referenced. [Pg.21]

In addition to conferring transparency on these polymers, the amorphous noncrystaUizable nature of polysulfones assures minimal shrinkage during fabrication of the resins into finished parts. The absence of crystallinity also assures dimensional stabiUty during the service life of the parts where high use temperatures are encountered. Durability. Grass-like surfaces intended for heavy-duty athletic use should have a service life of at least eight years, a common warranty period provided by suppHers. Economics and price of the final article often dictate a specific type of mbber that can be used. The expected usable life for the product is controlled by many factors including end customer awareness, competitive situation in the marketplace, safety, reUabiUty, and other factors. Rubber is almost always used as a functional part of another system. For example tires, hoses, belts, O-rings, and numerous mbber components are used in manufacturing automobiles and tmcks. As in dry compounding, acid acceptors must be incorporated into neoprene latices because of the wide use of these latices in coating fabrics and metals. The hydrochloric acid that forms during service life has a particularly destmetive effect on coated cotton fabrics that are not adequately protected. Wood is widely used as a stmctural material in the chemical industry because it is resistant to a large variety of chemicals. Its resistance to mild acids is far superior to that of steel but not as good as some of the more expensive acid-resistant alloys. Wood tanks used to store cold, dilute acid have a relatively long service life. However, increasing concentration or temperature causes the wood tank to deteriorate rapidly (6). [Pg.329]
