The Capital Transit Company was created on December 1, 1933, by the merger of the three transit companies of Washington, D.C.: the Washington Railway and Electric Company, the Capital Traction Company, and Washington Rapid Transit. The company would operate until 1956, when it was taken over and renamed D.C. Transit.
