Uploading a photo for illustrating a Wiki page - basics

Hi all: This is my first attempt ever at uploading a photo. I wish to illustrate the page on Roman Rabinovich. I uploaded the photo to Wiki Commons, assigned licence, description, categories.
Question: is there a requirement or a best practice to also create different size/resolution of the picture and/or to manually create a thumb view?
The upload wizard provided "To use the file in a wiki, copy this text into a page:". Next, I went to edit the Wiki page and copied this text using the Insert from Picture Gallery icon. In the edit view I can now see that a gallery section has been created but the picture does not show in Read mode.
Question: what shall I do next?
Any help to this first-time experience will be appreciated. --Jacques.999 (talk) 09:26, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Jacques! I fixed the format, and now it shows up. For a single image, there is no need to use the <gallery> tag, and if you do use the gallery tag, the format is a bit different; see en:Help:Gallery tag#Syntax. You may also wish to have a look at en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. LX (talk, contribs) 11:57, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

editing file name

Hi,

I have tried to edit, with no luck, a file image that i just uploaded to correspond with an addition i made under Diana (mythology), 6.3.2.

Here is a link to the image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Diana_the_Huntress,_featured_in_a_roundabout_@_Reforma_Avenue,_Mexico_City,_Mexican_Federal_District.jpg

I would like to change the image name to: Fuente_de_la_Diana_Cazador,_prominently_featured_in_a_roundabout_centerpiece_fountain_@_Reforma_Avenue,_Zona Rosa,_in_Mexico_City's_Mexican_Federal_District.jpg

Any assistance would be massively appreciated. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ayr91Senna (talk • contribs) 13:41, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

I don't see any improvement. The new filename as monstrous as the old one. I go ahead and add categories and descriptions --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 13:50, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
You can ask for the name of that image to be changed by using the "Move" option in the "More" menu. Choose criterion 1 (request by original uploader), and a filemover will rename it for you unless they think your new name is very bad. See COM:FR for more details. --bjh21 (talk) 14:33, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

I've waited an hour for email confirmation. Does it take days? Or is there something wrong? I've had an account here for a while but never tried to add my email. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 17:00, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

There is no special place but you can use general forums or talk pages. Ruslik (talk) 18:13, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
You may want to try in one of the talk pages of Commons:WikiProject Tree of Life. Christian Ferrer (talk) 18:26, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

1852

[[1]] Can this file be uploaded here or must I upload it at Wikisource? As the publication date is 1852, it is public domain here in the United States but if it is copyrighted in UK, must I upload it at Wikisource? I herd you liek mudkips (talk) 18:05, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

Why would it be copyrighted in the UK? Maybe I'm missing something, but it looks like the author died the year before it was published, which is far more than 70 years ago. LX (talk, contribs) 18:42, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
If i read UK copyright correctly, copyright lasts 70 years after the author's death. In this case, the author died in 1851, which makes the copyright expiration date to be 1921. So its public domain and completely free and in the public domain. Note: it applies to the text in which the person wrote it. It probably excludes forwards or any artwork produced on the work, unless they follow the information above as well. Artix Kreiger (talk) 18:46, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
"forwards" => "forewords"? Or something else? - Jmabel ! talk 20:01, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
Yes forewords. My error. Artix Kreiger (talk) 20:03, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
It's a US work, so Commons would accept it not matter its status in the UK. If you are in the UK, that's not a concern for Commons or Wikisource, but you could in theory be legally responsible for uploading works copyright in the UK, however unlikely. YMMV. This site says the rule of the shorter term in the UK as per US works is complex, but that US works published before 1900 are clearly PD in the UK. We've accepted 120 years as an acceptable period for works with unknown death dates; this page says the oldest known copyrighted works in the UK were published in 1859 (in 2010) and 1865 (in 2011). So there's basically no reason to worry about this work at all.--Prosfilaes (talk) 06:29, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

I was looking for something like that myself just the other day and couldn't find anything. I don't think there is one. Uploading a private photo from another person

At the moment I am working on the WP biography of a personality of German science management and have contacted the person and asked for a portrait photo that he made available to me for the purpose of publication in Wikimedia Commons. It is a picture that is obviously already circulating on the internet. He explicitly gave me the right to dispose of it as if it were my own. He himself is not well versed in the new media to upload it.

How should I proceed? Should I declare it as my property (his wish)? Should I declare that I upload at his request? In any case, the input mask of Wikimedia Commons is not very helpful. Who can help me (and the person portrayed)? Φως (talk) 20:21, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

You should have a permission from the copyright owner who is normally the photographer. The person depicted in the photo is obviously not this photographer and does not own the copyright unless it was a work for hire and the copyright was transferred to them. Ruslik (talk) 20:38, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your prompt respond, Ruslik. As I understood the copy right owner (Mister X) is the person depicted in the photo. He stated that it was taken by a colleague during an event and that the copyright has been transferred to Mister X. Since I assume the correctness of his statement, can I upload the photo without any written permission? I have only his email. And, what is in this case the exact procedure for the upload in Wikimedia Commons? Thanks again. Φως (talk) 22:00, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
See COM:OTRS (or COM:OTRS/de in German) for how the copyright holder can let us know (via email) that the permission is valid. Given that the copyright has been transferred, that is by far the best way to do this, because nothing else we do will track the subject's claim to own the copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 00:24, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
Additional notes @Φως, Ruslik0, and Jmabel: In Germany (and by the way also Austria) the copyright can not be transferred, or better: only transferred to the heirs of the original copyright holder.

Selecting the proper image license

Hello. I am writing a draft Wikipedia article on a German-Canadian painter named Carle Hessay, who died in 1978. The painter's estate was passed to a single friend, with whom I have been in contact with years, and she is the sole copyright holder of the images of his artistic output until the year 2029. She has agreed to let me use up to 27 images to illustrate the article. I am having a bit of trouble selecting the appropriate license that reflects her wishes. The copyright holder has agreed to the use of the released web images in the public domain, but she wants to retain control over the highest resolution images that can be used for giclée prints (and will not be available on Wikimedia Commons). For attribution, she would like to have users of the images reference her website of the artist, which contains all the images I would like to use. Thank you. Curiocurio (talk) 22:20, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

  • If she wants attribution, she should not release into the public domain, she should use a CC license. In fact, although I am not a lawyer, I would strongly recommend against any attempt to release low-resolution images into the public domain while retaining any other rights. She should release under a specific license, such as CC-BY (which is the one I recommend, because it allows her to specify attribution without otherwise significantly inhibiting use of the images). In any case, we would need email from the rights holder, as described at COM:OTRS, indicating precisely what release is being made. She can list the specific images by way of URLs on the existing web site, but because there are so many images it may be simpler if, instead of listing the images one by one she just indicates your account name, that you will be uploading 27 images, and that the permission applies to the set of images you will be uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 00:16, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

If an article is complete, can a link be shared to social media?

I am trying to use and promote Wiki on the web. Today I found a wonderful article on Guy Fawkes, but there is no way that I know to share this to my friends. Am I wrong? Is there a procedure? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Music908 (talk • contribs) 21:51, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

  • You presumably share via the URL. Or do you have something else in mind?
  • By the way, as far as I can tell, this has nothing to do with Wikimedia Commons, since Wikimedia Commons doesn't have articles. Maybe you meant to post this somewhere on the English-language Wikipedia? - Jmabel ! talk 00:18, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Unable to view file

Hi, I have just recently been unable to view images on Commons (and occasionally Wikipedia too). The problem is affecting not only Google Chrome and Internet Explorer but also on my tablet too. When I click on File:Nursultan_Nazarbayev_27092007.jpg for instance is it coming up with the message "Sorry the file cannot be displayed. There seems to be a technical issue. You can retry or report the issue if it persists. Error: Could not load image from https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f1/Nursultan_Nazarbayev_27092007.jpg " Other times I can get onto Commons but not one image is displayed...Any ideas what it can be? @Seth Whales and Jeff G.: I can also second this issue. This has been a long term problem for me -- sometimes the whole commons website will not load, sometimes the image will not load. This has been a problem on both Linux and Windows 10, and on multiple devices. The problem is extremely erratic, one minute the images will load, and then the other minute it will not. It literally does 404. This has been reported at VPT on enWP. I've asked twice before, in Aug 2015 and in Mar 2016 to no resolve. My name is not dave (talk) 18:03, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

Panoramio upload bot uploaded a lot of files with coordinates from Panoramio user Анатолий Зубанюк that are fairly useful for articles related to Moldova. • You are going to have to be more specific for anyone to help you.
    • Are you uploading with Special:UploadWizard or something else?
    • What format is the image (e.g. JPG, PNG)? What dimensions? What is the filename?
    • When you say "my own photo" do you mean a photo taken by you (which would be fine) or a photo of you (probably a problem because the copyright would belong to the photographer unless it has been formally transferred; also a problem if you wrote a Wikipedia article about yourself, see en:WP:COI).
      • I see you uploaded File:MariaJastrzebska.jpg. I don't know whether you were asking about that photo or some other photo, but that is clearly a photo of Maria Jastrzębska, but you indicate her as the author of the photo, which certainly does not look like any sort of self-portrait. You are going to need to go through the COM:OTRS process to get an explicit license from the copyright holder, or else this image will certainly be deleted.
    • Please use ~~~~ to sign your post shere; it will be turned into a signature. - Jmabel ! talk 21:10, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

@CristaInABQ: (← that should mean you get told about this reply) Your sandbox on English Wikipedia is here: en:User:CristaInABQ/sandbox. This Help Desk is on Wikimedia Commons, which may be why you were having difficulty getting back to your sandbox. As I understand it, many of the "abuse filters" that restrict uploading directly from English Wikipedia are relaxed if you upload using the Upload Wizard here on Commons instead, so I'd suggest following this link: Special:UploadWizard, or using the "Upload file" link on the left of the page, and trying uploading your picture that way instead. --bjh21 (talk) 00:28, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

More urgently, my main concern now is the restoration of all the information on Bryan Charnley contributed by Kirsten Tambling (Kytamb) up to 7 May 2016. This has nothing to do with the images but is crucial to the integrity of Bryan Charnley's Wikipedia entry. The site is woefully impoverished without this accurate and complete information It is very important that the website remains open and complete at this time as the National Portrait gallery and Wellcome are looking at acquiring Bryan Charnley's paintings for their collection and will be visiting the Wikipedia page.

I would be most grateful if you could give this issue your immediate attention. Thank you, in advance, for your help in resolving this matter.

Sincerely

James Charnley

P.S. I am not the Scottish footballer James (Chic) Charnley. I have been advised this may have caused some confusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by James Charnley (talk • contribs) 10:36, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

How could I know what pages are using this file? Thanks--Backinstadiums (talk) 12:00, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

Backinstadiums: If it were used in a Commons gallery or another Wikimedia project, there would be sections on the file description page with the headings "File usage on Commons" and "File usage on other wikis", like on File:1902 International Code of Signals painting.jpg. You could also use Special:GlobalUsage. This file doesn't appear to be used on any Wikimedia project. LX (talk, contribs) 13:40, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

Attribution with a iOS app

Hi,

I am developing a iOS app and are interested in using some of the very nice images available under various CC licenses.

I do understand how attribution should be done but have a problem with fitting the whole attribution on or next to the images, so my questions is this setup could be a solution to provide all the attribution:

1) On top of the image is the name of the creator and a three-dots icon (read more) next to the creators name. 2) If user clicks on the three-dots icon then all details is provided via a popup, including links and license information about the work.

Have tried many different solutions, but this would be the most user friendly when placing attribution within this app, is it a okey solution?

Thanks in advance! :) — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 95.109.1.58 (talk) 01:07, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

You should upload only pictures that meet at least one of the following three criteria:
  1. You own the copyright (typically because you are the photographer) and you are granting a sufficiently free license such as {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}.
  2. You can verify that it has a sufficiently free license. Typically this would be because the appropriate license is indicated on the source page from which you have obtained the photo, but this could also include an image where you have gotten in touch with the copyright holder to get them to make an appropriate release as described at COM:OTRS.
  3. The work is in the public domain. This requires a tag explaining why it is in the public domain, such as {{PD-old-auto-1923}} or {{PD-USGov}}.
If that is not clear, feel free to ask more specific questions. Jmabel ! talk 01:49, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

Having Problems with uploading a file

I uploaded a .svg file earlier today and the file appeared blank. I nominated it for deletion. I didn't really wait for it to get deleted, and just a few minutes ago, I copied the contents of the .svg and pasted them in a new .svg and I tried to replace the file by uploading a new version (the new .svg i created) and the new version appears cropped. Then I immidiatelly tried to re-upload it and this time it wasn't blank but was again cropped like when I tried uploading a new version and contained only a very small portion of the content. Any help would be appreciated. Update: It would seem that the one I uploaded later and seemed cropped is now fine. Hoping it won't get deleted since it's nominated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SoWhAt249 (talk • contribs) 18:27, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

@SoWhAt249: It seems Guanaco uploaded a superior version, but the main thumbnail on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Control_status_of_the_West_Bank_as_per_the_Oslo_Accords.svg seems to be all checkerboarded as if it is all transparent.   — Jeff G. ツ 21:09, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

Blank SVG thumbnail and PNG files

I uploaded File:Melbourne passenger railways map.svg yesterday but neither the thumbnail nor the PNG versions are displaying properly. They both show only black squares. Is this an issue with Commons thumbnails or is there something wrong with the SVG file? Thanks Takerlamar (talk) 00:00, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

Melbourne passenger railways map.png looks fine here. For the SVG see Help:SVG. But, please, make you SVG valid! Cf. Markup Validation of https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/18/Melbourne_passenger_railways_map.svg (413 errors in W3C Markup Validator). And, just by the way, if you’d had prettified the code before uploading you now wouldn't get error messages only for line 1. Adding line wraps also helps other editors. — Speravir – 04:05, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

Because they are better then Categories like Category:Media needing categories as of 25 April 2015 like it is at the moment. These pics were just created for this particular use where I needed them. And I understood the concept of the categorization like the following:

Hi, I'm not a regular here at Commons. I'd like to know if the images I uploaded sometime back can be deleted by myself (mass nomination/deletion). It's quite possible. There are instructions on how to make a mass deletion request at COM:MDR: in essence you make a single deletion request and list all the files on that one page. VisualFileChange has automation to help with this, especially with adding the deletion template to all the file pages. --bjh21 (talk) 13:32, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

uploading a new logo on behalf of a client

I am trying to update a clients logo to a new version on Wikipedia. I created my own account but still cannot upload because I am not verified. The logo looks like other logos already uploaded on the internet by third parties who sell their products but I am doing this on behalf of the company.

can you help me, please — Preceding unsigned comment added by CyrilLyons (talk • contribs) 16:59, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

CyrilLyons: Have a look at Commons:Guidance for paid editors, which covers your situation, including the topic of sharing logotypes. LX (talk, contribs) 17:11, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
@CyrilLyons: Is this new version significantly different from the old one? If it is, then you shouldn't overwrite the existing version. Instead you should upload the new logo under a new name (e.g. "Mycompany logo 2017.svg"). If you are just uploading a slight improvement on the existing file and the licensing is the same, then you can overwrite the existing one, but you'll have to wait a few days until your account becomes autoconfimed first. --bjh21 (talk) 17:28, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

Uploading artwork, deceased artist

It is OK to upload to Wikimedia Commons a piece of art created in 1925 by an artist, now deceased? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Earthwander (talk • contribs) 19:37, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

Does this artist have a name? Ruslik (talk) 19:44, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
Typically yes, but this is not a universal; the more specifics you can give us, the better answer someone can give. Who is the artist? Was the work published in the artist's lifetime? In what country? Etc. - Jmabel ! talk 00:54, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
I'd say typically no. It's after 1922, and even if you ignore that, an artist who lived in 1925 easily could have lived past 1947 (for life+70 nations) or even 1967 (for life+50 nations).--Prosfilaes (talk) 06:01, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

Are OOC, RAW, intermediate photographs wanted?

Hi, so in the near future I plan to contribute some own work to Commons. I usually shoot JPEG + RAW, and work on the RAW, doing cropping and other processing. Of course I'd upload the final product, but I'm wondering how I should handle the other files and intermediate edits.

Should in-between edits be uploaded such as before being cropped? Are lossless TIFF or PNG versions for future editing desired? An out-of-camera JPEG might serve as a good baseline or "ground truth" of how a photo looked, with white balance correction applied and other things, so would that be useful to compare with or maybe provide a more "truthful" representation? The RAW might prove useful for those who are better at editing than me or anyone who wants to reprocess the image. However, as I understand it, they need to be uploaded to a different website and currently only contains 235 files so maybe it's not worth it? Sorry for all of the questions, I doubt my photographs will be anything momentous, but I want to make my uploads as useful as they can be, especially considering Wikipedia's belief in reusability. I've noticed that many Featured Pictures will just have the final JPEG so maybe I'm overthinking it... Opencooper (talk) 22:13, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

I usually (but not always) upload the original JPEG, followed by my preferred version. See File:Ioana Flora 01.jpg for an example. - Jmabel ! talk 00:58, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
Ahh, the upload history does make sense for a place for edits. I think I'll hold off on uploading lossless versions since JPEG recompression isn't that drastic, except for any special photographs. Same with RAW. Thanks for your advice. Opencooper (talk) 17:44, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

This is a known feature when you use templates to put pages in categories: updates to the template don't immediately update the category membership. Any edit (including a Manual:null edit, which doesn't generate a history entry) of the member's page will cause that page to move to the right place. I think there's meant to be a background process that eventually sorts all of this out, but I'm not sure it's working properly. --bjh21 (talk) 15:53, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

@A ri gi bod: If it needs to be rotated (so the top-left corner ends up in the bottom right), you can use the "(request rotation)" link on the image page. If it needs to be reflected (so the top-left corner ends up in the bottom left) then you'll have to download it and use a lossless JPEG transformation tool like jpegtran. If that's a problem for you, I'm sure someone here could do it (me, for instance). --bjh21 (talk) 19:30, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

Why are my Object template edits not showing up in its Category files?

Category:The Three Graces by Jean-Baptiste Regnault (Louvre MI 1101) currently has 6 files, for Wikidata item Q11931734, showing a painting. Wikidata says the painting dates are 1793 to 1794.

For each file, the date is displayed by its category Object template Date value. That was set to show 1797 to 1798, not 1793 to 1794. I corrected that as well as adding an Object template Notes value pointing to the museum's online gallery page.

That was about 5 hours ago.

About an hour before that, I had pointed to a Wikipedia page in the Object template Description value.

File:Regnault_-_Les_trois_Grâces_01.jpg is the Object template Image value.

The Wikipedia page link is included in that file's display, but, so far, not the other 5 files (seems odd that it would be in one, but not the others).

The Description, Date, and Notes edits are all present in the Category:The Three Graces by Jean-Baptiste Regnault (Louvre MI 1101) display, but, so far, the last 2 aren't in any of the 6 files.

Why not? Is there some time lag that has to occur? Have my edits been blocked for some reason? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mabrndt (talk • contribs) 20:29, 27 November 2017‎ (UTC)

@Mabrndt: I think this is because the pages need to be purged: I think when you transclude something that isn't a template (which is how {{Object photo}} works), Mediawiki doesn't automatically purge the page when the transcluded page changes. I manually purged File:JBRegnault01.jpg and it's now showing the correct information. --bjh21 (talk) 21:59, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

Media needing categories as of …

Hello,

Why does the "Media needing categories ... " remain when the image is already put in the right category by the uploader? Just wondering. And what is the best way to deal with many images in this situation, except going through them individually and editing out the "needing categories". Is there a faster way? I've tried many ways and finally found a devious way but feel unwilling to go through that each time there are many images so categorized. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 21:33, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

Christian Ferrer, no this image? was not in a category to begin with. The problem is the image that is already categorized correctly but followed by "uncategorized". For example today all the images now in Category:Carrer Ausiàs Marc were already in that cat, but followed by "uncategorized". The choices are to edit each by hand to remove the "uncategorized" or go through some other rigamarole. And I had to take extra steps to add back Category:Carrer Ausiàs Marc images by Xavier Badia. Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot doesn't address the situation when the images are "uncategorized", even if they are in a category. The image must already be in a category that is not followed by "uncategorized" for it to work on any images in cats like Category:Media needing categories as of 12 November 2017‎‎. I've noticed this over and over, but no one ever seems to mention it. I've always wondered why the instructions tell the uploader to enter categories, since the images are still put in the "uncategorized" cat. I've been here two years and have learned a lot, but this issue leaves me wondering! Kalbbes (talk) 02:01, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
I agree with Kalbbes that this is a giant annoyance. I think the problem may have to do with the choice in Cat-a-lot of "Copy to" or "Move to." When I am categorizing in "media needing categories..." I must choose "copy to." That removes the "uncategorized" tag. Perhaps in some situations the images Kalbbes is referring to were categorized by "move to." I think that an FAQ that explains the choice and the consequences of it in varied situations should be made available easily to categorizers. That doesn't solve the problem though.Downtowngal (talk) 04:02, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
I checked the history of some files of Category:Carrer Ausiàs Marc and I'm not able to see when there was this issue. Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:45, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
Christian Ferrer, thanks for replying. The files were categorized separately with a red link. I made them into a blue link, but the file remained uncategorized, necessitating a separate step (per file) to remove "uncategorized". As Downtowngal has suggested, I will try other options. (The "copy to" explains why many file in "uncategorized" already have cats.) Thanks to both of you. Kalbbes (talk) 16:19, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
I found a file that I worked on that had this problem. See https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:A_Cave_-_panoramio.jpg&action=history. The file was uploaded by a bot from Panoramio to a category "Craters of the moon," with a "Check categories" tag. The uploaded category did not exist (the real category should have been "Craters of the Moon National Monument"). Because the category did not exist, another bot recategorized the file into "Craters on the Moon". Obviously this was incorrect. An editor manually transferred the file into "Media needing categories as of December 4 2016" but the "Check categories" tag remained. When I manually copied the file from "Media needing categories as of December 4 2016" into "Craters of the Moon National Monument," the "Check categories" tag remained. When I looked at the file again, it was now in two categories, "Craters of the Moon National Monument" and, to my surprise, "Media needing categories as of December 4 2016". (Usually ""Media needing categories as of December 4 2016" disappears when I copy a file from that category into a real category.) I suspect that the "Check categories" tag, when it exists in a file, is preventing "Media needing categories as of December 4 2016" from disappearing even if the file has been categorized into a real category. That looks to me like a bug. Downtowngal (talk) 18:37, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

Christian Ferrer, here is an example from today that is categorized but still has "needing categories" on it: [6] Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 17:21, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

uploading a piece of video

Hello everyone, I was wondering if I can upload a few seconds video which is shared in Facebook. wikimedia commons active users _ are statistics avaliable?

dear Wiki,

I am looking for wikimedia commons users statistics for my research purposes. please, let me know if there is a way to list the regions (places, countries) where the contributors come from I would like to check where most active contributors of commons have been operating

with kind regards

aolsz — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 159.205.31.84 (talk) 14:44, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

  • I'm pretty sure you couldn't get this as such, since we allow users to operate anonymously or pseudonymously, and IP addresses of logged-in users can be accessed only by a few selected individuals, to be used in cases like sockpuppet investigations.
  • On the other hand:
    • Some users self-identify by nationality with templates on their home pages.
    • Many, perhaps most, photos either have geotags or have categories related to where the user is from. If you look only at "own work" photos, this would give you a pretty good idea where contributors are, although it would not filter out who is taking photos while traveling and is actually based somewhere other than where they took the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 16:20, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
Well, one can always use this list of the most active users, however it doesn't list individual statistics such as a number of uploads, and other things. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 09:46, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

Request to upload a few batches

Can someone with a desktop computer 🖥 and access to the VicuñaUploader please upload Commons:Batch uploading/Illustrations of Vietnamese cash coins from Ed Toda's "Annam and its minor currency". and Commons:Batch uploading/Edo period coin collecting catalogues? I need the first batch for a Wikipedia article, and the second batch are 19th (nineteenth) century coin catalogues which could be used in educational settings. Because I only have a mobile device I can't really use any mass-upload tools and all requested images are in the public domain.

Note 📝: I asked this in the village pump earlier but heard no response.

Uploading via API

Hello! In two weeks we are having an event with lot of people from culture (writers, musicians, editors...) and we are trying to install a Photocall. This photocall will have an automatic "selfie" camera, so images can be uploaded directly to Commons. Is there any way to upload directly via API? I'm quite stuck with this and I need to give a solution to the technical company who is building the "selfie machine". -Theklan (talk) 12:43, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

There is an upload API. It's documented at mw:API:Upload, but I get the impression that it's not the easiest bit of the MediaWiki API to interact with. --bjh21 (talk) 14:37, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
  • Theklan, you should consider asking on Commons:Village pump because this is more of a proposal for a mass upload. Lots of things are usually considered before the technical side of it, like the the scope of the project and the appropriateness of images in an encyclopedic context, as well as categorisation and licensing. How long is the event running for? How many people and photos are expected to be generated? If it runs only for one night, you should probably make it easier for yourself and your team by just saving the photos locally, then look at ways to upload them: Commons:Guide to batch uploading. I can't really see it being essential that the photos get uploaded live and straight away in emulation of Twitter or something, Commons images and image pages need time and dedication and shouldn't be rushed. Cheers, seb26 (talk) 14:38, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
    • Well, @Seb26: , it would be a five days long event and all photos will be of great value, as we will have lots of music bands, singers and authors there. I can't give a number, but the interesting idea would be having them uploaded, so we can do every night a categorization and Wikidata insertion event. If there's no way to do it via API easily, then it can be the batch upload idea... let's see. -Theklan (talk) 17:14, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
      • If you have some development effort, consider creating a kiosk version of Commons:Mobile_app on an Android device. This may be suitable to use for a live upload selfie machine, but you would have to convince the Community separately as to whether having a project account can be managed appropriately. Otherwise, saving them locally, then batch uploading as a semi-manual process would be fine, and might be easier to do a bit of weeding out of unnecessary photographs in advance. -- (talk) 17:23, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I am a newbie and trying to figure out copyright restrictions. I took part in a editiathon with the Wikimedian in residence at Edinburgh university yesterday and ama bout to creat another page. Is it possible to use the photograph found by following this link image.https://archive.org/details/celticmonthlymag02mack 1 The magazine was published in 1892 and is therefore out of copyright. The magazine has been made available by the National Library of Scotland e. The following appears under the page Usage http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/scotland/ and Rights: National Library of Scotland holds full rights in this digital resource and agrees to license the resource under the Creative Commons License: Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.5 UK: Scotland If I can use the image, can I insert he image directly into the page I am creating or do I need to load it to Commons first? Thanks for all the help you can give. I did read your FAQs but am still confused. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JuliaBracewell (talk • contribs) 10:20, 25 November 2017 (UTC)

@JuliaBracewell: Yes, it is possible to: upload that photo here with licenses of {{PD-Art}}, {{PD-UK-unknown}}, and {{PD-old-1923}}; ignore the claim by the National Library of Scotland per Copyfraud; and then use the resulting file in your new article.   — Jeff G. ツ 16:41, 25 November 2017 (UTC)
@JuliaBracewell: I think {{PD-US-1923}} is slightly more appropriate than {{PD-old-1923}} if the author is unknown. You might also use {{PD-old-assumed}} in place of {{PD-UK-unknown}}, which saves describing your research into the identity of the artist. In any case, you can upload the picture using the Upload Wizard. When you're asked about copyright status, choose "This file is not my own work" and "Another reason not mentioned above". Enter {{PD-art-two|PD-UK-unknown|PD-US-1923}} in the box. --bjh21 (talk) 19:17, 25 November 2017 (UTC)

ABOUT MY PICTURE OFF LOAD

PLEASE HOW CAN I OFFLOAD MY PICTURE FOR THE AFRICAN PIX FOR THE YEAR — Preceding unsigned comment added by BEREKARA UELEE PIUS (talk • contribs) 06:21, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

I have a question about getting permission from someone to add a BioPic to an article.

I started the article on Maryn McKenna. When I first started the article I was very new to wikipedia guidelines. So I naively posted a biopic to the article without knowing I had to get permission. However, I am DMing Maryn McKenna personally for permission to add a biopic. How do I prove this so I can add a biopic to the article?

I have her permission, what are the steps I take to add the approved BioPic to the Maryn McKenna article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BookPortal (talk • contribs) 05:55, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

@BookPortal: please follow the instructions at COM:OTRS. You'll want to make sure Maryn McKenna actually owns the copyright of that image herself (as opposed to the photographer or some kind of agency). --El Grafo (talk) 15:46, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

    • Phinaeus's question: "I have an audio file I recorded and would like to add to the Commons, how can a machine judge acceptability? Admittedly it is a recording of a female climax in the sex act. Considering a lot of the photographs I've seen on the Commons I thought it might be welcomed. There is no foul language and it is not a porn tape, or even a video. As my previous query gets no response I thought it might be appropriate to ask the Help desk for guidance. I have made no other uploads."

Photo essay

Hi Wiki,

Am a participant of the Wiki Loves Africa Contest. I would like to submit a photo essay. However, I dont seem to find the way. I have clearly read out the information given. What I would like to be shown is how to create the list/link.

Regards, Mauryn. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mauryndinar (talk • contribs) 11:03, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

To ask about submitting a photo essay to the contest you'd do better to ask at Commons:Wiki Loves Africa/Help desk.
As for photo essays in general, can you give an example of what you mean? Usually the closest we come to that is gallery pages; here's an example of one of those I recently created: International District, Seattle, Washington. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

Are snapchat stories and photos allowed on commons? (Copyright question)

I've been lately wondering if it is possible to upload images from public snapchat stories put out there by artists (as I often edit pages for rappers cause I enjoy that type of music a lot lol)

On Snapchat's terms of service, it states "We call Story submissions that are set to be viewable by Everyone as well as content you submit to crowd-sourced Services, including Our Story, “Public Content.” For all content you submit to the Services other than Public Content, you grant Snap Inc. and our affiliates a worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable, and transferable license to host, store, use, display, reproduce, modify, adapt, edit, publish, and distribute that content. This license is for the limited purpose of operating, developing, providing, promoting, and improving the Services and researching and developing new ones.

Because Public Content is inherently public and chronicles matters of public interest, the license you grant us for this content is broader. In addition to granting us the rights mentioned in the previous paragraph, you also grant us a perpetual license to create derivative works from, promote, exhibit, broadcast, syndicate, sublicense, publicly perform, and publicly display Public Content in any form and in any and all media or distribution methods (now known or later developed). To the extent it’s necessary, when you appear in, create, upload, post, or send Public Content, you also grant Snap Inc., our affiliates, and our business partners the unrestricted, worldwide, perpetual right and license to use your name, likeness, and voice, including in connection with commercial or sponsored content. This means, among other things, that you will not be entitled to any compensation from Snap Inc., our affiliates, or our business partners if your name, likeness, or voice is conveyed through the Services, either on the Snapchat application or on one of our business partner’s platforms."

Am I free to use "public content" from snapchat on commons? WolvesS (talk) 16:15, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

The mode of operations in wiki is really too complex. Not everyone is a computer guru. This is an issue the wiki guys should address. This competition and uploading processes are just too complicated. I have been trying to upload via the photo essay comtest and i ve been asked to create a page yet nothing to no avail. It is not working. I didnt see an avenue for uploading for the photo essay contest. It just keep taking my data. The instructions are not even comprehensible. Please guys work on this. Has really been a torn in my flesh. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chidinma0025 (talk • contribs) 08:11, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

@Chidinma0025:

  • If (as it sounds) your issue is about it not being clear enough how to create a "photo essay," please keep in mind that that is an aspect of the contest, and most of us on Commons have nothing to do with that contest. You would do much better to take the issue to Commons:Wiki Loves Africa/Help desk, where you will be able to communicate with people involved in putting together the contest. "Photo essays" are not a typical part of Commons: I don't think I've even seen one here before this, unless you say that certain gallery pages border on being essays. - Jmabel ! talk 16:32, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
  • If your question is just how you start a page: for example, you could navigate to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2017/photo_essay/Your_page_name and click "create" (but don't literally use "Your_page_name", put in the name you want). Then you'd edit like any other wiki page. You might also find it useful to read Commons:Wiki_Loves_Africa_2017/photo_essay (if you haven't already) or to look at the photo essay pages linked there, which take several different approaches to creating such an essay. On any given page, you can go into the "edit" mode (but please don't make changes) to see how the particular page was made in terms of wiki markup. - Jmabel ! talk 16:39, 30 November 2017 (UTC)
  • From other questions and answers below here, it sounds like their contest-specific upload tool is broken. - Jmabel ! talk 16:45, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Africa 2017 Upload Wizard stops after uploading before description

Hi, I uploaded 18 pictures for Wiki Loves Africa 2017, but after uploading I cannot go any further. The Next button does not work, so I cannot give any descriptions. @RikSchuiling: I confirm that there is a technical problem with WLA Upload Wizard.
