Can file names have symbols instead of letters and numbers?
For example, this file name here: File:Medicinal Herb 🌿.jpg. Is there a policy?

- Bad idea considering difficulty typing those characters and finding the file Zanahary (talk) 15:26, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Ooligan: I agree with the other comments that it is a very poor choice and uploaders should avoid using them, but to answer your precise question I have not found a Commons policy forbidding their use. Apparently, the file naming policy of Commons does not forbid it. And the renaming policy does not seem to allow renaming for that reason. The policy of the English-language Wikipedia forbids it in the titles of articles, but it's not Commons. Notifying User:WomanON, the uploader of your example. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:15, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
- I left an explicit link to this discussion on their talkpage in case they don't get the ping. DMacks (talk) 16:55, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
- The last bullet-point of Commons:File naming#Language-specific guidelines advises to avoid unicode symbols, for several technical and practical reasons. That's only a proposed guideline, but it is linked from several other policy and guideline pages and other sets of advice and templates. DMacks (talk) 16:43, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
- Looking at this uploader's files in general, I would say many fail the fundamental file-naming standard of being descriptive of the image. For example, any guesses what, even in general, File:Last_option_in_the_House_😂.jpg might be before clicking? And even after looking closely at the full description and image itself, any idea what in particular those specific components are? DMacks (talk) 16:48, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

World of Warcraft Map
Hi my name is penelope. I was looking at a coloring-page-like map of azeroth from world of warcraft and noticed that it was missing the dragon isles. I have been looking at other pictures hoping to find a similar one but updated with the dragon isles and found nothing. I have a map of azeroth on my wall that I am working on and I am hoping to add the dragon isles to it. I don't need each individiual zone; I just want a matching map of the dragon isles that looks like a coloring page. I only need the outline of the island,I don't want the borders of each zone already drawn since I am planning to add them myself. I apologize if this is not the correct area to write this note; the help options I looked at were very confusing. If you cannot help me create a picture like this, i'd very much appreciate it if you could reccommend another website that might be able to help me. Thank you and have a great day! - It's not something I can prioritize right now, but I'd be willing to give it a shot at a later time! There are some other maps in the Maps of Warcraft category, though none that include "the Dragon Isles". 🙇 EdoAug (talk) 00:12, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Modifica figura
Glicitra (talk) 10:58, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- I assume this is about File:Levodopa3D.PNG, since the other image at the top of it:L-DOPA is the same as the corresponding image in en-wiki.
- Jmabel ! talk 19:13, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Uploading studio photos that my grandmother left to me (dates: 1920-1960) & family photos she took
I inherited photos from my grandmother and mother that were taken between 1920-1980. The photos prior to 1953 were portraits taken at studios that are no longer existant. The photographers, too, are deceased. I also have photos taken by my mother and grandmother. They all have historical value for the fashions they wore which are very clear and representative of the eras in which the photos were taken. They also show in the background buildings and neighborhoods that were part of the Italian-American community in Brooklyn, NY and Wilmerding, PA during the same period (1920-1980).
The photos are of my grandmother, grandfather, mother and father. Everyone is deceased. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emilyannfrances (talk • contribs) 16:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Since these photos belong to me I am willing to share them for knowledge and educational reasons. But how do I attribute them. They are not my own work and everyone whether studio or person is deceased.
Please advise as I am not clear in who to attribute them to.
Thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emilyannfrances (talk • contribs) 16:03, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Emilyannfrances: Hi, You can upload the photos that were taken by persons from whom you inherited the rights, for example if that is the case with your mother and your grandmother. The authorship of each photo is normally attributed to the person who took that photo, unless you want to keep their identities secret. If it's unclear which of them took a photo, you can explain that and name both. As copyright owner, you can license the photos with any free license of your choice, for example, but not necessarily, those listed in this category, unless a photo is in the public domain for some specific reason. The educational scope of some photos might be disputed, but that can be more easily evaluated after they are uploaded. You can probably not upload the studio portraits, unless you demonstrate that they are in the public domain for a specific reason or that you somehow acquired their copyrights. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:58, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. The photographs were not used for media, just taken at the request of the customers. There are no copyright symbols. By the age of some of the photographers I researched as part of my local history, they are dead for over 70 years. The studios closed. As far as I can determine, no descendant carried on the business. And then I have portraits taken by an unknown photographer in my grandparent's apartment. I could attribute to unknown photographer, taken in Mrs. Serrapede's apartment. Emilyannfrances (talk) 18:16, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- The studio photographs should be fine as long as there's no copyright notice on them. Although they are probably fine regardless. I think the educational value can be justified by the nature of them being historical studio photographs. There's a lot of information about the photographer, time period, and the history of photography in general from such works. Although like Asclepias says it's not like they can't be evaluated for educational value on a case-by-case basis after being uploaded. --Adamant1 (talk) 18:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! I have checked some of the cardboard frames the photos came in. The studio name is on some. In which case I will credit the studio. Since these were in our community and some include the photographer's name I can check for date of death. To my knowledge the descendants moved on to other lines of business, but I'll check again. Most of the studios are closed long ago by end of 1950s. I think if I credit the studio then with an estimated date I'll be within conformance. No, there are no copyright marks on any of the photographer's labels or cardboard frames. 100.1.103.102 18:11, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Emilyannfrances: Under the pre-1979 U.S. copyright law, passing copies to your family probably counted as publication. If there was no copyright notice, then that is publication without notice, which at that time would have placed the images in the public domain.

Today I uploaded a picture to Wikimedia Commons I took of myself in 1983 using a camera with a self-timer. The link: File:Helmut Sinor (1983).jpg
Now I received a message that something is still not correct. I can't get my head around it any more. Whatever I do, there's always something to criticize. Under https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Helmut_Sinor_(1983).jpg it currently says:
{{No source since|month=May|day=30|year=2024}} == {{int:filedesc}} == {{Information | description = {{en|1=Helmut Sinor (1983)}} | date = 1983 | source = {{own}} | author = [[User:Chinnichap|Chinnichap]] | permission = | other versions = }} == {{int:license-header}} == {{self|cc-by-4.0}} [[Category:Portrait]] [[Category:Helmut Sinor]] [[Category:1983]] [[Category:Self-timer]]</nowiki>
I have absolutely no plan. What else do I have to do so that my photo is finally accepted?
Kind regards,

- @Chinnichap: Hi, Some users nominate for speedy deletion photos that might or might not be self-portraits. In the page of the file, you can click on the button "Challenge speedy deletion". That will create a normal deletion discussion and you can tell the reason for why the photo can be kept. There is a similar situation with the 2018 photo and it is more urgent because the speedy deletion tag has been there for a longer time. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:52, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- The photo from 2018 was taken by my sister. If it gets deleted now, that's not so tragic. For now, I would like to bring the picture from 1983 through the thicket of regulations. That has priority now. As I'm in hospital next week, I can only take care of it until Sunday. After that, I won't be able to do anything to get the photo from 1983 accepted until June 10. Chinnichap (talk) 07:50, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Chinnichap: I've taken the first step for you. You can follow up at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Helmut Sinor (1983).jpg. Question: any connection to Chinn & Chapman? If not, that user name may be a problem. I believe it's probably a trademarked name. - Jmabel ! talk 18:37, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- I created this username years ago to familiarize myself a little with the possibilities. It was simply the first username that spontaneously came to mind. At that time, I had no intention of ever contributing to Wikipedia myself. If the problems are due to that, I could certainly change the username.
- Should I do this in the current situation or will it only make things more complicated? Chinnichap (talk) 07:42, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry we've ended up having this conversation in two places, but I would suggest you just stop using the Chinnichap account and stick to the one under your own name. - Jmabel ! talk 19:11, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

Good morning, I am writing to you to request the removal of a very poor quality photograph:
I don't know if this is the right place for the application. Best regards Ángel Santamaría Fotografía (talk) 09:51, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Ángel Santamaría Fotografía: Hi. I'm the uploader of the file. I have added the {{Low quality}} tag to the file's description, but from what I gather low quality by itself is not a reason for removal. I'll let more experienced editors to weigh on this, though. Kind regards, --NoonIcarus (talk) 14:48, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
- See Commons:Deletion requests for proposing a photo be deleted. NoonIcarus is correct that poor quality is not by itself always a reason for deletion; other factors are also considered. For example, a poor quality photo of a very common thing which we have many good photos of would likely be deleted, but a poor quality photo of a notable person or important event could be kept if we don't have better free licensed alternatives. - The issue is about what "free use" means. As long as no explicit licence is given, there may be implicit restrictions. Is it OK to make derived works and share those? Can the photo be used commercially? Both are requirements on Wikimedia Commons. –LPfi (talk) 06:25, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

How to tell if a photo is copyrighted/if using it is allowed?
I'm trying to update the photo on the Wikipedia article for Akhilesh Yadav, as the current one is severely outdated (it's from 2015). The new photo I'm trying to add (this one) is apparently owned by "ANI Photo" according to this article, but the photo isn't anywhere on ANI News's site that I can find. The photo has been used by many different news sites, not sure if that means it can be used on Wikipedia/in the Wikimedia Commons. What should I do? CalyxSage (talk) 15:38, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- In short, if you do not see an explicit free license at the web site source, or have some other verifiable reason to know it is free licensed, assume it is not free licensed and should not be uploaded to Commons. See COM:LICENSE for details. I see no reason at either of the links you gave to think the photo is free licensed. I don't know how to read Hindi, but I do see a clear copyright notice at the bottom of the second page linked. ANI is en:w:Asian News International a commercial news organization, who presumably holds the copyright of the image. Not free for Commons. This file is marked with a "This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was a Commonwealth of Massachusetts public record disseminated by a Commonwealth agency or the Massachusetts Archives." license, but the given flickr source [1] seems to disagree. Which is right? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:43, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- Several conditions are necessary for the application of the template PD-MAGov. Two of those conditions may not be met by this file.
- Firstly, as specified in the template, "Works that are considered 'public records' but were not created by a state or municipal government agency may be copyrighted by their author". The EXIF of this file specifies "Author: Joshua Qualls, Copyright holder:www.joshuaqualls.com". That seems to mean that it is copyrighted by the author. However, the website of the author indicates that he is "serving as director of photography for the office of the governor [...]".
- Secondly, the statement in the template applies to "records [...] held by the Massachusetts Archives". The photo is from 2023. Is it held by the Massachusetts Archives yet?
- It is possible that the photo is not in the scope of the template. The precaution principle would suggest to not upload such files unless it can be convincingly proven that they meet the conditions of the template despite indications to the contrary.

- FYI-ping to uploader @Babegriev. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:24, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the ping. I'll digress to consensus if the community thinks this is copyvio, however I'll provide my rationale for upload. This photograph was taken by an employee of the Commonwealth while in the course of their official duties (namely the Governor's Press Office as part of the Executive branch). This was not a municipal agency, but the state government. The metadata claiming copyright does not supersede the doctrine of edict of government, however serves well for appropriate accreditation to the author. While the photographer could reserve copyright on works they took while outside the scope of their government duties, this is not the case here. The photograph was uploaded to the official flickr account of the Governor of Massachusetts, which is – employing logic from Lindke v. Freed – an official channel of government correspondence. This would make content uploaded to that account a public record of the Commonwealth. As to whether or not this specific branch of government can reserve copyright, the University of Massachusetts system proper does have the ability to copyright material under MA statute. The Governor's press office, on the other hand, has historically submitted content from previous administrations (example here) to the state archives. This indicates that such content is an edict of government and not copyrightable. Babegriev (talk) 03:45, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- One more thing. This was not content submitted to a government agency by a private party, but was taken by an employee of the Commonwealth, and by extension, was created by the Commonwealth, rather than the attributed photographer. Thanks! Babegriev (talk) 03:48, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

I wrote a short article for contribution to Wikipedia about the father of singer John Denver. His father was an important man in his own right, one of the USAF's prominent test pilots in the 1960s who set speed records. I have multiple citations to back the article up.

Can I look up which categories I created recently?
By coincidence, I have become some kind of frequent producer of new categories (no worries, they all make sense...). As I usually also fill them up with a decent number of files, the new categories are cumbersome to identify even on the same day in the mass of own contributions, let alone some days later. Display problem with just-uploaded image.
I just uploaded File:Galit, Panacot, Lumbay, and Scarborough Shoal.png. It is similar to File:Galit panacot lumbay.png but has a problem when displayed -- it displays as an inset in the top-left corner of a larger image field instead of filling out the field. What have I done wrong? Wtmitchell (talk) 03:42, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Wtmitchell: Looks fine to me. When you say it "has a problem when displayed" do you mean that it looks wrong on that file page, or when used on some other page? - Jmabel ! talk 05:30, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. After I had posted here I had uploaded a different version of the image -- snipped from the same chart but covering a larger area. That fixed the display problem at the cost of sacrificing layout similarity with another image I was contrasting it with in a WP article. I neglected to update this section here after I did that -- I apologize for that.
- That is not clear; to clarify, see the images below the infobox in this WP article. The two images or interest are this one and the image just preceding it. Anyhow, the initial version of this image had the problem I described.
- See what I characterized as a "display problem" here, using the initially uploaded image. That's the way it appeared in the WP article -- an inset in the upper-left corner of the display field. Wtmitchell (talk) 10:36, 6 June 2024 (UTC)

Buongiorno…
- You need that the video has a free license, and that the YouTube account is allowed to publish the video under this license, i.e. we can't accept the license if the video is made by a third party. Yann (talk) 18:46, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for answer @Yann. How do I know that a video has a free license? Anna Tesař (talk) 18:51, 8 June 2024 (UTC)

- I understand, thank you @Abzeronow. And then just upload the screenshot to W.commons? Anna Tesař (talk) 19:03, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, if it has that license from the copyright holder. Abzeronow (talk) 19:07, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Yann what release rights should I choose? This file is my own work or This file is not my own work? (I would make the screenshot) Anna Tesař (talk) 19:34, 8 June 2024 (UTC)

Picture Upload - My Original Work
Hello, I'm an employee at a skateboard shop in Los Angeles, CA, and I'm trying to create a wiki page for Brooklyn Projects skate shop but wiki. is not allowing me to upload a photo that I took of the storefront, i.e., the cover photo for the page. I keep receiving the message that the photo cannot be verified as original - What can I do to make the upload happen? BrooklynProjects (talk) 18:59, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- @BrooklynProjects: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user. Such uploads of png photos are not allowed at all. The following applies to each photo. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:17, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- So one solution is to use the upload link on this page and choose the full-resolution jpg you got from the camera. If the photo prominently shows copyrightable elements (such as the shop's logo) you may need to address those issues, but you could upload first and then immediately ask here whether there are any remaining issues. –LPfi (talk) 07:45, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
Commerial magazine Logo's upload to Commons?
Hi.
I started working on the article about Magia i Miecz in order to extend it. Working on that, I thought it would be neat to show the magazine logo in the infobox. I believe it would be fair use under American law and it is thus allowable (?). However, after reading the comic, I am not so sure.
Can somebody tell me if I can upload logo of a magazine in order to show it in the infobox in an article about said magazine?
Best wishes -- Kaworu1992 (talk) 23:15, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Fair Use is not allowed on Commons. COM:L. Abzeronow (talk) 23:33, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Though it might imaginably be below the threshold of originality. @Kaworu1992: can you provide the URL of a page that shows the logo in question? - Jmabel ! talk 05:22, 6 June 2024 (UTC)

- Definitely above the TOO.
- If the article is considered to meet en-wiki's standard for notability, then that logo can be hosted on en-wiki (not on Commons) as a non-free logo for use in the article. Uploading photos and dearth of online references
I am trying to create an entry for my grandmother, who happens to be the first female engineer to graduate from Bolivia, back in 1944. Unfortunately there is zilch online about her, and because we live outside Bolivia we have very little access to information. What kind of references can we add in this case? Also, Wikipedia is rejecting my photo of her - a digital image of a long-ago family photograph. WHY?? Maya Iriondo (talk) 01:55, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Maya Iriondo: we can't really definitively answer questions about Wikipedia here on Wikimedia Commons. Ask on Wikipedia (en-wiki or es-wiki, I can't tell which you are talking about). In general, you may have a hard time doing this without good access to sources. For what it's worth, print sources are exactly as acceptable as online sources.
- You indicate that you are writing about your own grandmother. That's not a problem here on Commons, but it is on Wikipedia. Please make sure you are familiar with the policies on conflicts of interest: en:WP:COI and es:WP:CDI. respectively.
- When you say, "Wikipedia is rejecting my photo of her", could you be more specific as to what you tried to do and what error message you got? Have you read Commons:First steps, which guides you through the process of adding images here on Commons? - Jmabel ! talk 05:28, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks! I guess I am a Luddite, and can't understand how I arrived to the Commons while trying to find help setting up a Wikipedia entry.
- About conflict of interest, I really don't know what to say. Can't be too conflicting to have an entry with somebody's bio. And I am doing it because, somehow, nobody ever thought about doing it. I'd rather leave it to someone else who is more Wikisavvy. Perhaps I should. Maya Iriondo (talk) 08:20, 6 June 2024 (UTC)
- It is very common that people write about non-notable entities that are relat3ed to them: themselves, their band, their petty business. Because of that, articles written by a relative are under close scrutiny. There is no prohibition though, and you are usually still better off by being open on it, thus showing good faith and getting help. The key in writing the article is to have good sources and keep to verified facts, avoiding any personal subjective statements. There should be such advice in the linked policies. Perhaps you have good sources in the family archives, such as newspaper articles about her graduating. If you know what to look for you might be able to use contacts in Bolivia to get articles scanned and sent to you. –LPfi (talk) 07:58, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
- Nothing subjective, just dates and places. I do have a newspaper article or two. On paper. How do I make them accept them, if the site rejected even a portrait photo? Still trying to find contacts in Bolivia that might want to help. 2603:800C:A01:8800:615B:3D6E:1472:E817 09:08, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

- @Maya Iriondo: As mentioned in the reply on 6 June, you received the automated message of the cross-wiki filter when you tried to upload a file to Commons while you were on the Wikipedia website. Please see your filter log, which recorded that you tried the same thing five times in six minutes and of course you obtained a negative result the five times. Did you try the solution suggested three days ago, to upload the file while you are here on the Commons website? Another thing mentioned in the log details is that you wrote that you are the author of the photo and that you own its copyright. You would probably have either to add substance to those statements or to instead use a public domain rationale that can meet the criteria of PD-Bolivia. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:55, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Maya Iriondo: In your filter log, it can be seen that you triggered a "cross-wiki" filter when you tried to upload "File:LiliaSalgueiro.jpg" to Commons while you were on Wikipedia. You can try to upload the file when you are on Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 06:37, 6 June 2024 (UTC)

- The filter thought the image is likely to be a copyright violation or otherwise unsuitable. Try to upload the image using the upload link on a page of Wikimedia Commons, such as this one. I suppose that will succeed. –LPfi (talk) 08:11, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Drkolaman: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. I am not allowed to access that Google Drive link. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:08, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

Accident death?
After I read this article: "范漢傑", I feel questions about the cause of his death.
- If a person dies while recovering in a hospital ward, can we say he/she died in a "accident" or not?
- If a person is discharged from hospital after recovering from surgery, but suddenly dies, can we say he/she died in a "accident" or not?

- This is the help desk for Wikimedia Commons. Perhaps you should ask on the talk page of the article at zh wikipedia. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 02:40, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
- The question may still be of interest for categorisation on Commons. The insurance company, the court (in case someone was responsible for the accident), the Wikipedia and Commons may have different opinions, depending on the exact circumstances. Sometimes quite arbitrary hard rules are applied (such as "within three months of the accident"). –LPfi (talk) 08:28, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

Uploading photo from a website
How to upload a photo from a website? I mean the link of the photo WikiNewbie1612 (talk) 15:28, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
- @WikiNewbie1612: If you are asking about directly uploading to Commons by providing a link to a photo on another website, generally that can't be done. There are a handful of sites (Flickr, for example) for which we can do this. Normally, from a technical point of view, you need to download to your computer, then upload to Commons.
- Please be aware that most content on the Internet is copyrighted and not free-licensed, and is therefore not suitable for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 15:54, 9 June 2024 (UTC)

How can I submit photos I have taken for consideration as photo of the day or formthat matter for any purpose you would like? EvieB7 (talk) 19:15, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
- @EvieB7: Firstly you would need to upload your photos with Special:UploadWizard and properly categorise them per COM:CAT. Then your photos would need to become featured pictures per Commons:Featured picture candidates. They would need to meet the criteria on that page, which is no easy task (look at some of the current candidates for inspiration). Then you could follow instructions at Commons:Picture of the day/Instructions to add it to any day of your choosing. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? -

I have found a picture I wish to upload but...
I am currently working on the history of Nintendo and found a picture of their headquarters taken in 1889 that was found on this website celebrating the 150 years of the Meiji era, I wish to upload it but considering I don't speak japanese I have issue finding the author of this picture. But considering the picture was taken in 1889, couldn't the picture be considered in the public domain and be free to use ?

Organization Logo
I have permission to use it but cant find the option on the upload wizard BelowFlames (talk) 05:39, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi BelowFlames. Can you clarify what you mean by I have permission to use it? Do you mean COM:CONSENT? Has the copyright holder of the logo given their permission to not only you but to everyone in the world to download the logo from Commons at anytime and pretty much reuse the logo anyway they please (including for commercial purposes or derivative reuse)? That's bascially the type of permission a copyright holder needs to give for their content to be hosted by Commons, and it's only something that the copyright holder can give. Moreover, there needs to be some way for Commons to formally verify that this is the case. So, if you asked the copyright holder something like "Can I use your logo?" and they said "yes", then that's great for you but not enough for the logo to be uploaded to Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:32, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello writers, I want to ask you a question regarding vector images, well I have converted to an SVG image, but it renders incorrectly, here is the image:
As you can see, text is displayed incorrectly and appears to be outside the image. I'm not sure if it has to do with the font used, since it uses Google's Roboto font and it is included in most systems, It also looks perfect in the browser.
Is there a way to solve it? Alxira5 (talk) 20:23, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- COM:FONTS: You can use fonts listed in https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/fc-list. There is no reason to use Roboto anyway, because, as far as I can see, the logo you are recreating actually predates the font. --Geohakkeri (talk) 20:45, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- According to what I see on the list, The Roboto font is not there and I am trying to use other fonts, but it looks much worse. I'd better leave the file as is for now and hope to think of something about it. Alxira5 (talk) 23:05, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

- IP 109.137.67.13: Assuming your the same person who also posted #utilisation d'une iage sur mon site web below, please don't post the same question twice. All Commons' users are volunteers which means it sometimes take a bit of time for someone to answer a Help Desk question. Posting what amounts to be essentially the same question isn't going to speed things up. In addition, you should be careful in adding personal information such as an email address on any Commons' page because Commons' pages aren't private and there's no way to prevent some from taking your information and using it in an in appropriate way; it's also very unlikely that anyone answering your question is going to do so by email. Since your question (according to Google translate) is about re-using images found on Commons, please take a look at Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia because that page contains general information you might find helpful. If you want a more specific answer, you're going to need to provide the name of the image you want to reuse because not all images are licensed the same way and the conditions you need to meet to reuse an image depends upon how it's licensed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:16, 13 June 2024 (UTC)

The only exceptions I can think of offhand would be (1) if you have a lot of parallel cases, please create a mass DR rather than one for each file and (2) if someone kept doing this tendentiously on a series of files that should obviously be deleted, at some point that could be considered disruptive (just like doing anything else where you are repeatedly wrong). - Jmabel ! talk 01:04, 14 June 2024 (UTC)
Vincent van Gogh Gallery
Hello. My question is; can I use few V. van Gogh reproductions from public domain with intention to publish (print) in small book with small edition in Croatia (Europe). I understand that is in part "reuse image PD- Art photographs. Some materials I got from museums, but I hope here we can download image mentioning the source Wikimedia Commons? Thank you. 93.143.10.97 08:21, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- I don't really see a question about Commons here, and we can't give legal advice.
- Most reproductions of Van Gogh's paintings should now be in the public domain; it you have a question about the status of some particular file that you cannot work out by looking at the file page, please ask that specific question about a specific file, because otherwise someone could easily overlook some edge case. - Jmabel ! talk 22:11, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer, Jmabel. Example: Autumn Landscape with four trees....would it be enough to write: oil on canvas, dimensions, year, Krooler- Muller Museum; or should I add in this creditline by yours photo of the reproduction in my book also the source (site is not in use )artseverydayliving.com; or would it be better just to write- after the museum where painting is stored: source Wikimedia Commons? As I understood informations about reuse photographs from your website, Croatia has not restrictions- this is more then 70 years from painters copyright expiration. 93.140.132.62 13:57, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
- Still nothing here about a specific file. We have at least three files depicting that painting: File:Vincent van Gogh - Herfstlandschap (1885).jpg, File:Autunno Alberi Vincent van Gogh.jpg. File:Autumn landscape.jpg; there might be others that are not correctly categorized.
- The painting is certainly in the public domain, so there are no legal issues involved with how you credit it. Obviously it would be polite to mention the museum and photographer, but that is not a legal requirement. - Jmabel ! talk 17:11, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
- Ok, certainly I shall write the museum by the reproduction. I hope is ok to mention Wikimedia Commons if site is not in use, or the name of photographer is not full name. Maybe only in the impressum. Thank you, Jmabel. 93.143.63.37 15:19, 14 June 2024 (UTC)

- @DEVIREDDY PRASANNA KYMAR: I have been tagging the photos for speedy deletion because you appear to have taken them from websites, most likely the subject's Instragram page and claiming them as your own work. This is a copyright violation and is not permitted. I have also been reverting your edits on the English Wikipedia for this reason and because you are adding the images improperly. - The max file size is 5 GB, which would be wildly large for a photo. It seems very likely that something else is the problem. If you have a large file that you want to upload, using chunked uploading can help. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 01:20, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

How to update images larger than 100 Megabyte / UploadWizard works only for new files
The regular upload form only supports image sizes < 100 MB. The same for API uploads e.g. when I use the Commons:LrMediaWiki - by the way: in the age of high resolution cameras and panormas I am not happy with that limitation. The only way, known by me, to upload images > 100MB is using the Special:UploadWizard. Problem: If the images is already uploaded I have no chance to update this (e.g. after some retouching work) to a new version because the UploadWizard is only for upload new photos and I have to use the regular upload form with 100M limitation. Question: How can I update a photo, e.g. Panorama-Zoo-Duisburg-Richtung-Osten-2024-v2.jpg (120 MB)? --Tuxyso (talk) 14:36, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Tuxyso: Is chunked upload (on the file page, under the file history) not working for you? - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 15 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the fast reply, Jmabel. under the file history I only have "upload a new file". If I click on that I only receive the regular upload form with 100M limitation, s. screenshots under https://1drv.ms/f/s!AnxwCG6XoF4bkncYt841EgsLLs-V?e=2JHace
- @Tuxyso: it doesn't offer "chunked upload" in parentheses after that?
- Does anyone know, is that something only offered to certain users? I thought it was there for everyone. - Jmabel ! talk 05:33, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Even if it is not visible for everyone, it is only a link to Rillke's large file upload javascript. You can add it to your common.js file, or you can use it from the tool's description page without first adding it to commons.js. While that is not a convenient way to upload a file (revision), it is available to all users, therefore it would not really make sense, to exclude the link for some users. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 05:48, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Can you post a link with a short manual how I can add it? Tuxyso (talk) 11:15, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- I found it out by my self, see: User_talk:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js#How_to_install. Thanks to Rillke to provide that great tool. IMHO it should be place in a more prominent manner - especially when image sizes and camera resolutions increase. --Tuxyso (talk) 17:57, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

How To Upload an Image to a Wikipedia Article
Friends,
I have invested the better part of one hour trying to accomplish this simple feat without success. I have read, followed the instructions and failed. I have watched three YouTube videos and still have failed. The buttons to cick on the videos and the Internet how to's do not exist on the pages I am looking at.
Is there anyone on God's planet Earth that can help me accomplish this? It is a public domain photo. Thank you for the hand-holding, step-by-step guidance! Francoise1937 (talk) 01:01, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- To everyone who read my post...thank you! Somehow I managed to stumble onto the correct way. It worked. Thanks be to God. Divine order strikes once again! Francoise1937 (talk) 01:26, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Francoise1937 Why do you claim File:MR. WILLIAM J. O'NEIL.png is public domain? You wrote the author is unknown and the source is a text string without a link to the actual source? Please add author and a link to the source, otherwise i will start a deletion request. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 05:54, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

- @Francoise1937 Hello! You wanted this as a leadimage for the en-WP article William O'Neil, is that correct? Then you have to do it another way:
- Go here: WP:FUW. Choose
- Upload a non-free file
- This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use.
- This is a historical portrait of a person no longer alive.
- Hope this helps. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:33, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Btw, per bottom right corner of your pic, author seems to be Glenn Larkin/IBD Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:36, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Nevermind, assuming I understood you right, pic now in en-WP article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:52, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your assistance! Do I understand correctly, that the current photo has been cleared to be a permanent inclusion in this Wikipedia, William O'Neil article? Francoise1937 (talk) 17:37, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Francoise1937 no, that is not correct. It was uploaded under the Fair use rationale to the english language Wikipedia and is used in the article about William O'Neil. But only temporarly until a foto with a free license is uploaded or the free use rationale of the english language wikipedia is changed in a way that the foto does not conform with or the fair use rationale is dropped completly. You write, that you have another foto that "is NOT copyrigthed". I consider it highly unlikely that a foto that is not copyrighted exists. But if you mean to say you have a foto with a free license or that is really in the public domain (for example because it was taken by a member of the US government or a office of the US state) then do upload it at commons. So that the fair use foto can be deleted. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 17:52, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Then tell me please, how do I find a copyright-free photo? If none exist, how do I contact a website, that has a photo I'd like to use, if there is NO contact information with that entity? Francoise1937 (talk) 18:42, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- On your talk page User talk:Francoise1937 there is a welcome box with four chapters, the first one "First steps tutorial". - @Fugura: Please ask the copyright holder to send the permission via COM:VRT. Also ask them that you are in copy. When you receive a ticket number, then you can upload the file mentioning that ticket with {{OTRS pending}}. Yann (talk) 11:29, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

- @Fugura: when you say you have written permission: did they grant a specific license? If so, you can probably handle the VRT process yourself by emailing the written permission document (assuming that the document is a formal, signed document, not just an email, which is too easily faked). Otherwise the photographer will either have to go through the VRT process themself (as suggested above) or post the specific license publicly on a web page that is clearly under their control (e.g. put the image and license on their Flickr page, or their personal website, or a public post on Facebook, etc.). - Jmabel ! talk 19:09, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
Scottish Parish Name
Why has the Scottish Parish Name FRUCHIE in Falkland, Fife, Scotland been changed to FREUCHIE, which is incorrect spelling on this website. Why do people change names just to suit whatever without researching for facts first?? Hello!
I represent Debreceni VSC, football club based in Debrecen, Hungary. Mr. Ike Thierry Zaengel is the president of the club and his page was deleted. Could you please tell what was the reason for deletion of the following page and what can be done to recover the page of Mr. Zaengel? As I could see there was a copyright issue regarding the main picture. The picture was taken by one of our partner media organizations. I look forward to your help in this matter!
Best regards Zserbóka (talk) 09:46, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Zserbóka: Hello, You uploaded that photo in July 2022 and apparently you requested the renaming of the photo to the name "File:*Ike Thierry Zaengel*.jpg" in April 2024 [6] and then the photo was deleted in May 2024 because it did not have a template to indicate its license [7], which is a little strange for a photo that had been uploaded two years before. An admnistrator should look if a license was removed in 2024. Do you remember who you indicated as author, what license, if any, you indicated and what evidence was provided for that license? Anyway, the photo needs a free license issued by the owner of the copyright. If the owner of the copyright is the "media organization", then the free license must be issued by someone in authority at that media. If the free license is not already indicated publicly somewhere, then the owner of the copyright can send an email to Wikimedia as indicated in the page Commons:Volunteer Response Team. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:02, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- File:Ike Thierry Zaengel.jpg was a redirect ever since the move, so the history is at File:*Ike Thierry Zaengel*.jpg (probably not a move that should have been allowed, from a better name to a worse one, what were you thinking in requesting that and @RodRabelo7 what were you thinking in granting it?).
- This has at all times had {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}. It was nominated for deletion on a "no source since" basis, not a lack of license so @Krd's rationale for deletion seems to be wrong.
- @Zserbóka, on upload you claimed this as "own work" and granted a license via {{Self}}. Now you are saying "The picture was taken by one of our partner media organizations," so how could you, personally own the copyright? Perhaps that is what Krd was alluding to, but if so the terse deletion rationale certainly does not make that clear.
- In any case, in order to restore the image, we need a license granted by the actual owner of the copyright, and an accurate statement as to who is the author. - Jmabel ! talk 18:01, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

Hi, I hope this is the right place for this kind of request. My request is to restore this version of the File:Emblem of CIS.svg. Btw it was the original version (see history changes). Current version looks like a mockery, with a white symbol on a white field. It looks like a vandalism. PS: I just noted that the two authors of the white on white version are: the first an indef-banned vandal for sockpuppetry, and the second has only 2 contribs. QR Code
Hello. Is it possible to use a QR code on Wikipedia articles in commercial flash cards made for sale? Dmurby (talk) 14:14, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Dmurby: I'm not certain what you are asking, so let me answer the two most likely possibilities:
- Yes, absolutely, commercial flash cards may contain QR codes that lead to Wikipedia articles.
- No, such QR codes do not belong as files uploaded to this site (Wikimedia Commons), but it is typically OK if a QR code is part of an image that is otherwise in scope.

- Huxley died in 1963 so this photograph is definitely old. When was it taken and who was the photographer? Abzeronow (talk) 01:02, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- It was taken in the 1950s - not sure what year. You can see it here: https://mediaetpotere.wordpress.com/2015/04/15/aldous-huxley-e-a-vedanta/
- It's owned by the Vedanta Society of Southern California. I've contacted them to get permission to use on Wikipedia, but I don't think they will allow it to go to public domain. Ellis408 (talk) 02:02, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- Firstly, I think the photograph is from the 1940s possibly around 1945 when Vedanta For The Western World was first published. Secondly, what we'd need a license that we'd accept from the copyright holder which may be Vedanta Society of Southern California, a permission to use on Wikipedia is not enough. Thirdly, it's possible that this photograph is public domain by formalities if it was published in the 1940s. @Clindberg: Abzeronow (talk) 02:13, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- If you are contacting someone to get permission, be sure to go through the COM:VRT process to have them send an email directly. Relayed permissions usually aren't enough. As for the copyright, we would need to know when it was published. If it was a private photo only made public relatively recently, it could well still be under copyright and you'd need a license. If it was published in a book in in the 1940s, there is a chance it is public domain. But we would need to know more about when the photo was published, to really know. Figuring out if something is public domain can be quite complicated, at least anything under 120 years old. Carl Lindberg (talk) 02:38, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

File notes wiki markup search
I recently learned that it is possible to identify subjects in pictures with Wikidata items in file notes (Template:Q). I know that a search will throw results related to the file's source code and description, but I was wondering if there was a "cleaner" searcher to look images about a specific person (or Wikidata item). Many thanks in advance, NoonIcarus (talk) 14:01, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @NoonIcarus: not sure what you mean here by "throw", nor do I follow what you are asking for. Something that would somehow (even for images not tagged with the relevant Q-item or category) be able to eliminate other people of the same name? That doesn't seem possible. Could you describe systematically what you would want the search to include and exclude? - Jmabel ! talk 16:35, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Yes, sorry. In this case, I'm thinking about searching files that depict a specific person. I know this can be done through other means, such as categories and descriptions, so I'm wondering if there's a specific search query for Q-items. --NoonIcarus (talk) 16:39, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @NoonIcarus: So you'd want it to pick up "depicts" for that Q-item, explicit use of {{Q}} in the Wikitext, presumably any category linked from that Q-item and... anything else? The category part can get tricky, because we'd have no easy way to know that Category:Barack Obama in 2010 is desired as part of a search for Barack Obama (Q76), but Category:Obama Foundation isn't: we don't have anything to distinguish the nature of one category as likely to contain images of the man and the other not. Or am I still misunderstanding? - Jmabel ! talk 17:22, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: For the most part, yeah: only pick up the depiction of said Q-item. The use of the Q-item and the category in the file is not "mandatory" for the search. I've figured that the use of {{Q}} can make this easier, but I also understand if there isn't a specific way and other means for searching are better. --NoonIcarus (talk) 17:47, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @NoonIcarus: The tool View it! lets you search for files that depict a given Wikidata item, like Q76. The tool depends on structured data, specifically relevant files being annotated with depicts statements. Lovelano (talk) 23:33, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

I have uploaded an article concerning the relativity theory, on which I got an answer - fully red - that accused me of a lot of dirty deeds, without mentioning any of them in particular. Could you be more specific? I suppose you conclude that I wish to suggest nasty practices by Einstein which is not difficult and which I therefore carefully avoided (also now, by the way). The only thing I wish is to bring the subject of possible errors in the Theory in discussion without pointing. I agree it is difficult to avoid, but I might be able to phrase things in such a way that it becomes easier to swallow. The main point: IF THERE ARE ERRORS IN THE RELATIVITY THEORY AND CRIRICISM IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, THEN THE THEORY MIGHT DO SERIOUS HARM TO OUR SOCIETY. I am prepared to try and get to handling this matter together - realising that even if we make this a public matter the chances of changing anything are slim. Uploading 151 of my own images at a time?
So I'm just wondering what the best way to upload 151 images would be. I would be uploading Sankey diagrams for all 151 seats of the Australian House of Representatives. This seems to me to be kind of in the middle between a regular upload and a batch upload, and the tools I've seen seem to be geared towards institutions instead of regular users. I am leaning towards OpenRefine, but do I have to put in a batch upload request or create a bot account for 151 of my own files? Also, presumably I'd be repeating this process one time per election (every 3-4 years). Thanks. MarkiPoli (talk) 12:14, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
Self-made images?
Hello. What are the copyright rules surrounding self-made images, specifically flags. I have recently uploaded 200 or so flags of political parties in Pakistan to Commons, and then proceeded to use them to update lower quality version in their respective party articles/pages. A fellow editor reverted them under the pretense they infringe on copyright. Is this a copyright issue? I designed all flags myself in an editing software, for the purpose of updating some older images or adding them to articles where they weren't present. AgentDuck11 (talk) 01:57, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- @AgentDuck11: Hi, and welcome. Please identify the source images and their copyright holders per COM:EVID and review COM:DW and COM:PAKISTAN. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 02:04, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- OK so I've indicated the source sites for where the flags were derived, and labelled them under
This image of a flag is ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain, because it consists entirely of information that is common property and contains no original authorship. For more information, see Commons:Threshold of originality § Logos and flags. |
. do any copyright issues remain? AgentDuck11 (talk) 22:57, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- @AgentDuck11: I'm a bit confused. You say you "designed" the flags yourself. Are these your renderings of flags actually used, or are you saying that you invented flags for the parties? - Jmabel ! talk 18:36, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- The flags are all re-renders of poorer quality party flags, based off of the parties' own, as high quality or professional versions weren't available. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:06, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- By the way, most of these look too simple to be copyrighted (see COM:TOO), though it is likely if the designs are in actual use by the parties they should be marked with {{Trademarked}} and if they are not in use by the actual parties then they are probably out of scope. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Many parties are defunct/not active, some are unofficial, and the majority had not uploaded any clear quality versions of their flags. I chose to create standardized versions for almost all. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:10, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Based off of what few designs they seemed to be using. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:11, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'd like to also mention that quite a few of the flags are inspired by the parties' logo or symbol designs where a proper flag was absent, so some have been created from scratch. These flags still stay true to the parties' symbols/logos and are representative of what their flags would be. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:18, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- @AgentDuck11: For those where there was no "proper party flag", at the very least you should mark the file as your own creation of a hypothetical or imaginary flag. Those may be out of scope, I haven't kept up with the current thinking on this and I know it has been a controversial area. The ones that are just your renderings of historical or present-day flags should be fine, at least for the most part. Most of these should be {{PD-flag}}. I'm a little concerned that a few may be too complex for that, e.g. the following:
- I'd like to also mention that quite a few of the flags are inspired by the parties' logo or symbol designs where a proper flag was absent, so some have been created from scratch. These flags still stay true to the parties' symbols/logos and are representative of what their flags would be. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:18, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Based off of what few designs they seemed to be using. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:11, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Many parties are defunct/not active, some are unofficial, and the majority had not uploaded any clear quality versions of their flags. I chose to create standardized versions for almost all. AgentDuck11 (talk) 19:10, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Jmabel ! talk 21:17, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- I've gone through the uploads, termed them with PD-flag and provided source URLs for the images they're based on. Is there anything else I need to worry about concerning copyright?
- If everything's good, please let me know if these are fine to use in pages/articles. AgentDuck11 (talk) 01:14, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- @AgentDuck11: what you've done looks generally reasonable, but I cannot promise there are no problems. I'm not going to review hundreds of uploads, research their accuracy/history and give my opinion on each. The burden is on the uploader to do that sort of diligence. As I said, the two most likely issues are that some of these might be over Pakistan's threshold of originality, in which case we can't do anything about an existing copyright by the party or by the designer of the flag, and any that are conjecture on your part should be identified as such. - Jmabel ! talk 05:10, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

I want to upload original work (PDF) as a new use, but abuse filter 281 prevents it
I am a new user, trying to upload my own work as PDF. The work are two figures showing the two types of diversity used in the direct imaging of exoplanets, related to Angular-Spectral Differential Imaging observation strategy. Both images are my original work, and in my opinion, high quality figures explaining the observation strategy in Angular-Spectral Differential Imaging more clearly than other published work.
The images are like this [8].
I would like to contribute these to the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methods_of_detecting_exoplanets#Data_Reduction_Techniques section and put the figures into the public domain. I would like to upload them as .pdf since they are generated with latex/tikz and so .pdf is their native format. From what I understand the upload filter blocked me because I am a new user and there is concern about uploading copyrighted material.
I would still like to contribute the two figures to the wikimedia commons and, if possible, the specific page or a new page on direct imaging of exoplanets if more appropriate. Evergreen3026 (talk) 11:10, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Evergreen3026: Hi,
- As I already told you on Commons talk:Abuse filter, PDF is not a suitable format for images. Please upload the original images in JPEG format. Thanks, Yann (talk) 11:17, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

Is there a way to constrain Commons API Qid-query results to some geospatial region?
NOTE: I want to lookup a Qid WITH a geo-constraint.
This geospatial region could be a: "geolocation + radius", geobox, or some country ID.
Eg. can the following query for "castle" (or any other <Qid>!) in some way be constrained by a geospatial region? [9]
If this is not yet possible, please consider adding support for it :)
Thanks in advance! Waldenn (talk) 23:47, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- The vast majority of Commons files lack geospatial data.
- Also, if I were working on something like this myself, I'd definitely implement it as a minimum and maximum latitude and longitude, not a distance from a particular point. The latter is a much more expensive calculation, without any great gain over the former. - Jmabel ! talk 00:52, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Waldenn: I haven't tried it myself, but mw:Extension:GeoData does allow searching near a specified location, both via API and mw:Help:CirrusSearch#Geo_Search. MKFI (talk) 06:42, 13 June 2024 (UTC)

Posting the Cover of a Single (Wikimedia Copyright Help)
Hi, I'm making a Wikipedia page for a musical single, and I want to upload a picture for the cover of the CD (and less importantly a screenshot from the music video). https://imgur.com/a/APIwcrB That's the link to the single cover between 2 choices, but I don't have the copyright license. What do I do? Other songs have single covers and they're copyrighted DipsetBurnerAccount (talk) 00:39, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- You can probably get away with uploading it to Wikipedia as fair use. It can't be uploaded to Commons since its a modern album. Don't be supprised if it and the article get deleted on Wikipedia though. Singles albums are hardly ever notable enough to warrant an article. To the point that I probably wouldn't even bother. --Adamant1 (talk) 00:54, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for replying. I finished writing the article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dipset_Anthem, and the song is notable enough in my opinion to warrant an article. How do I upload an image directly to Wikipedia? All of the things I've seen so far take me to Commons. DipsetBurnerAccount (talk) 02:13, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- No problem. On Wikipedia if you click the "upload" link on the side bar and then scroll down to "Upload a non-free file" then it should upload the file there instead of Commons. --Adamant1 (talk) 02:36, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Upload a new version of a file
Slav! I want to upload a new version of this file, but I'm not allowed, what should I do? should I be entitled to this type of uploading files? Zamand Karim (talk) 11:51, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Zamand Karim: Please look at your filter log. When you tried to overwrite the file, you should have received a message directing you to the page Commons:Overwriting existing files/Requests, which indicates how to request the possibilty to overwrite a file. However, the file Zirak.jpg is poorly documented, it has no author identification, no date, no indication of a source of origin other than an immediate flickr source, no history of publication, it has only an empty PD-Art template without parameters and it does not have a justification for why the image would be in the public domain. In that situation, it is not clear if it can be kept on Commons. That can be taken in consideration before investing too much work on that file. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:40, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

Image uploading
Hi, We want to add a new image to a Wikipedia page of our organization's CEO/founder. We uploaded a copyright free image that we own to Wikipedia Commons that was speedily deleted due to "Wikimedia Commons is not your free personal web host". Could anyone offer advice on the process for doing this and how to avoid our images being removed? Thanks in advance. J0109B (talk) 22:18, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- @J0109B: You don't say what organization, and it looks like this account has no prior uploads (deleted or otherwise). It would be much simpler if the person who uploaded the image would log in on the same account they used to upload to ask this and/or if you would give the filename of the file that was speedily deleted.
- If the description clearly stated whose photo it was, and if either the description contained a link to the relevant Wikipedia article or the article was already using the photo, and if things are as you describe them, that should probably not have resulted in deletion, speedy or otherwise, but with no indication of the article, the photo, or the uploader, there is not a lot more I can say.
- Just an aside: the following is not a Commons matter, but if someone involved is editing the English-language Wikipedia on a paid basis or as part of their job, make sure they are familiar with en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure and act accordingly, or they are very likely to have their account blocked on that site. - Jmabel ! talk 22:52, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

I tried to upload a new picture to Gregg Bissonette's page and it took me through all the steps and said thank for contributing but the picture is still an old picture. Can someone help let me know what I did wrong? Thank you!! Mike Drums (talk) 23:59, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Drums: I take it you are asking about a cross-wiki upload from Wikipedia to Wikimedia Commons. File:Gregg-bisonnette.webp was successfully uploaded, though I believe your claim that it is in the public domain is incorrect. It has not been used in any article, and I would recommend against using it unless you can justify the claim that it is PD. What is the basis for that claim? - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 23 June 2024 (UTC)

- @Mike Drums In short, the default assumption is that any random picture, perhaps especially of living people, you find online is under some sort of copyright and you can't upload them on Commons. There are exceptions, put they are rare. You can upload pics on Commons of Gregg Bissonette you have taken yourself with your own camera, and so can other people, like his friends and co-workers, or just see him perform. He can upload selfies on Commons if he likes. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:16, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. I had made some edits on Gregg's page and sent them to him. He asked me if I could change the picture on the main page from the photo shoot he did with the drum company Drumeo earlier this year.
- How can I get the picture in question put up?? Thank you. Mike Drums (talk) 12:16, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Drums: Have the copyright holder send permission via VRT or post it. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:59, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for indulging me with my lack of knowledge. So I relayed that info to Gregg and he just sent me a personal pic from his phone that his daughter took of him. Being that he gave me permission can I use what he sent me??? Thanks for the help. Mike Drums (talk) 17:54, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- If his daughter took it, she owns the copyright, and can go through VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 18:34, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Drums Simplest, for you and us, is that his daughter registers an account and uploads it here [10]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:13, 23 June 2024 (UTC)
- So the pictures of him are for work purposes and promotions. He literally has drumstick in his hands. One was actually taken at a work session.
- According to copyrightable work "made for hire" a picture taken for work purposes would belong to the person hiring/requestion the pictures for work to be taken. Especially being that it was his phone being used to take the pictures. "The commissioning party is considered the author and owns the copyrights to the images rather than the photographer."
- So this is what I have found about copyrights.
- Is there a way I can get some help and get it resolved and the picture put up??
- Thank you. Mike Drums (talk) 22:20, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- In the U.S., "work for hire" almost never applies when you just pay a photographer to come take pictures for you. It's more something that arises when an employee does photography as part of their job. For example, on a "work for hire" basis, a photo studio might own the copyrights of the photos taken professionally by the photographers who work for them. But that's not what we are talking about here. Unless there was a formal employment situation that mentioned transfer of copyrights (very unlikely) or a specific, written transfer of copyright (slightly more likely, but VRT would need to see a scan of the document), copyright is going to belong to the photographer or (if they were part of a studio/agency) the photography company. That is who we need to have go through the COM:VRT process to grant a license. If it was his own daughter, and you are in touch, that should be simple. - Jmabel ! talk 23:16, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- The picture of him was at the beach with drumsticks in his hands. That's what he does for a living. Not of him and a dog or something. But ok. The fact that a dad asked his daughter to take pic's for his own use for his business has to get permission from his daughter to use pictures of himself on his phone is asinine. The policing has gone to some ppl's heads it seems. Mike Drums (talk) 23:49, 24 June 2024 (UTC)
- Last question/attempt. If he got written permission from his daughter, would that be sufficient?? Thanks. Mike Drums (talk) 00:21, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Drums: FWIW, you may careful adherence to copyright law "asinine", but if you want to understand why we "cross the Ts and dot the Is", have a look at Commons:Copyleft trolling. But that is off topic, and if you want to discuss it, please start another thread.
- If you don't want to do what Gråbergs suggested above (daughter opens an account, uploads it herself) then by far the simplest thing to do at this point would be for his daughter to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to grant a specific license by sending an email that is clearly from her (also, it's a good idea for her to CC you on the email so you can stay in the loop). If for some reason it is difficult for her to send an email she could put the equivalent on paper and sign it, as long as she specifies a license and is clear what photo she is talking about. Then you could make a digital image of that and email that to the VRT. The bid advantage of her sending the email is that if anything is unclear, this gives the VRT the chance to write back and clarify the matter. - Jmabel ! talk 04:44, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- I understand protocol. The fact that If you ask someone to take a picture of you with your phone that the person that pushed a button ie; an 8 year old child or strangers on a vacation, now owns the copyright to the picture on your property.
- Just seems bizarre to me.
- So I’m going to see him in about 3 weeks at a drum show. I told him I can take new pictures and go from there.
- What specifically do I need to prove that I actually took them next month?
- Thanks. And I will read the copyright info.
- Nothing personal. Just, to me, doesn’t make a bit of sense. Mike Drums (talk) 17:02, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Drums: If you are uploading images you take yourself, probably nothing needs to be proven. We generally assume good faith on that unless there is strong evidence to the contrary (e.g. a very unlikely combination of locations or of cameras over a person's ostensibly "own" work; images that appear to be screen grabs; images that were already published and credited to someone else; etc.). Occasionally, user with no prior uploads and little, if any, prior participation in Wikimedia projects posts materials that seem very unlikely to be their own work (e.g. a formal-looking portrait of a head of state, or something that puts them right in the middle of a breaking news story) and we might require that they go through the VRT process to clarify who they are and how they had this access. I photo of a moderately famous drummer is not going to be that sort of issue. - Jmabel ! talk 22:20, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- Gotcha. Thanks.
- When the time comes and I go through the steps, how would I know if it will be the main page pic or just added to others that might be there?? Thanks. Mike Drums (talk) 02:09, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Mike Drums: What en-wiki does with the photo (including how you yourself may edit en-wiki) really isn't Commons' affair. If there is doubt about how best to use it, take it up on the talk page of the article. - Jmabel ! talk 03:54, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello~ I previously added a photo to Wikicommons, but was too slow to use it in a Wiki page, so it was deleted. I have some photos which I can add to Wikidata pages, but they have yet to have a Wikipedia page. Would they still be deleted? Rickinasia (talk) 09:47, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Rickinasia: Hi, and welcome. You uploaded many files, please read your user talk page more thoroughly. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:34, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: Hello~ I have read my user talk page and those are unrelated. Perhaps I am thinking of an image I uploaded to Wikipedia and it was deleted as it wasn't used. Regardless, my question still stands; if I upload images to Wikicommons and they are, for months at a time, only used within Wikidata, with the goal that they will be used in Wikipedia pages once people create those pages, is that acceptable? Or will images that are only used within Wikidata going to be deleted as they are not currently beng used in a Wikipedia page? Cheers! Rickinasia (talk) 02:30, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Rickinasia: I think there is at least one false premise to your question, and it is very hard to discuss a hypothetical file that no one here has seen.
- Probably about 90% of images on Commons are not used in any other WMF wiki, and that is fine. No image should have been deleted from Commons simply because it was not used in any en-wiki article. Assuming there is no copyright/licensing problem, inclusion in a Wikipedia article is a sufficient, but by no means necessary, condition to keep an image on Commons.
- If, however, you uploaded the image to en-wiki itself: yes, not being used in an article would probably be sufficient reason to delete an image from en-wiki. Wikipedia is a collection of articles; Commons is a media repository. Commons deletes would-be articles on sight; en-wiki is pretty quick to delete unused media. - Jmabel ! talk 04:00, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- Ohhhh! This is exciting to hear! I ask as I have taken a lot of pictures of scientists over the past few years who have Wikidata pages but no Wikipedia pages (in any language). I'll slowly go through the media I have and upload to Wikicommons and use in Wikidata accordingly. Thank you! Rickinasia (talk) 06:33, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Rickinasia: Which photo did your initial post mean, then? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:29, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- It doesn't matter. I was not asking for insight on the old issue that happened years ago. Summary: At some point in time, I uploaded a photo to some Wiki site (appears it wasn't Wikicommons so I now presume Wikipedia), didn't get used, it was deleted. Having had that experience with Wiki-something, I wanted to see if I would have a similiar issue with "upload to Wikicommons, use in Wikidata". <- this was my question. I have permission
In facebook someone uploaded pictures which are maybe in commons scope. If i get permission from him through VRT or such process, what should i redirect the source link of those images.i guess photos taken from facebook are not allowed.
--KEmel49 (talk) 16:40, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- Getting permission from the person implys that you have contact with the person and can ask the person to provide the pictures in another way (the person could upload the pictures themselves, or mail them to VRT or to you). But it is no problem to take the pictures from faceboot IF there is prove that the VRT permission is for the pictures on facebook. --KEmel49 (talk) 18:06, 26 June 2024 (UTC)- The person owning the rights needs to send a mail to VRT. You will find a template for the permission mail at VRT. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 18:15, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- @KEmel49: It is certainly simplest if it is a public-facing Facebook post from the copyright-holder, and the permission there is clear as to what license is granted. If so, that's sufficient. Assuming the picture itself is on the same Facebook thread, when you upload just cite that thread as the source, and quote the permission granted there in the "permission" section of {{Information}}. No need to involve VRT.
- If the Facebook post is not public, though, then we'll need VRT. - Jmabel ! talk 22:44, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- please get me understand in which way should i put that comment section here.
--KEmel49 (talk) 02:50, 27 June 2024 (UTC)- @KEmel49: You can't "put that comment section here". If it is a public post, link the URL of the post (and someone can follow the link and read the comments section). As I said above, quote the permission (but not the whole comments section!) in the "permission" section of {{Information}} for the file. - Jmabel ! talk 04:03, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- VRT should not be needed here if it is a public-facing post and the comment with permission is clear. - Jmabel ! talk 04:06, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

White Monarch Butterfly
The white monarch you have labeled here is not a monarch. It looks more like a variety of a fritillary butterfly. Examine the markings of both species and you will see. 174.126.131.175 00:38, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Yesterday I uploaded a file (Birger Jarl till Bjälbo.pdf) with the intention to work on it in Swedish Wikisource. But it (Sw WS) refuses to recognize it, claiming it is "0 x 0 bytes", even though Commons shows it as non-zero. I waited a while (overnight) to see if the problem would go away, but ... no. Then I thought I'd just upload it again, but ... now of course it's a duplicate, so that doesn't work either. I'm at a loss for how to proceed. Is it possible for YOU to just simply delete/obliterate the existing version, eg, so I can start over from scratch?? Bio2935c (talk) 23:16, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Request for Assistance in Creating and Contributing a Wikipedia Page
I trust that this correspondence reaches you in good health. The purpose of my communication is to seek your aid in the development and contribution of a novel Wikipedia page. Being a committed academic in the realms of cyber security, Spirituality, and Politics, I am deeply enthusiastic about the dissemination of knowledge and the provision of precise and thorough information.
My intention is to establish a page highlighting my scholarly endeavors in the aforementioned subjects, which I am convinced will offer substantial insights to the Wikipedia community.
The aforementioned subjects are presently inadequately represented on the platform, and I hold the belief that a meticulously researched and appropriately referenced page will constitute a noteworthy augmentation.
The following are the main points I plan to address in the article:
1. Introduction: An concise overview of the subject, emphasizing its significance and pertinence.
2. History and Background: Elaborate examination of the historical backdrop and evolution of the subject.
3. Key Concepts and Terminologies: Clarification of fundamental terms and ideas associated with the subject.
4. Current Applications and Impact: Discourse on the present utilization of the subject and its influence on relevant areas.
5. Notable Figures and Contributions: Details about prominent individuals and their contributions to the subject.

- @Cybertek1: assuming you mean the English-language Wikipedia, you'd probably do best to ask at en:Wikipedia:Teahouse.
- @C.Suthorn: "media repository of Wikipedia" is really a bit misleading (although "media repository associated with Wikipedia" fair enough). The various Wikipedias (one in each language) and Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, are all sister projects considered to be at the same level. Commons is no more "the media repository of Wikipedia" than en-wiki is "the English-language encyclopedia of Commons." - Jmabel ! talk 19:50, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Screenshots
I know that screenshots are not allowed on Wikimedia Commons however, I have seen a few images screenshotted from YouTube. - Screenshots are allowed if the video is freely licensed or if the work is old enough to be in the public domain (pre-1929 US films, some Soviet films, European films in which all principal creators have been dead for 70 years, etc.) Abzeronow (talk) 22:37, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

How do you delete or delete messages in my User Talk
Hi, I would like to know how you delete or delete the messages in my User Talk Bolitachan (talk) 08:29, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Bolitachan: Best is not to delete messages, but to archive them. You can use the archive bot for that. Yann (talk) 09:12, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information, but I have a question just out of curiosity: why is it better to archive messages instead of deleting them? Bolitachan (talk) 03:48, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- Archived messages continue to be readily searchable, and they are also somewhat easier to browse.
- FWIW, I myself usually just delete the basic "something's missing" warnings from bots (e.g. I failed to note a source) once I've remedied the situation, but I archive pretty much everything else from my user talk page. - Jmabel ! talk 05:40, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

User page missing/not missing?
I clicked on a link for my user page, and got "This page does not exist." I'm fairly certain that I've visited the page before and it did have content. I'm logged in, so my account has not been deleted. If I select the "contributions" link in the upper right corner, it is also empty. But if I go to a page I know I've edited, my edits are listed in the history; And if I click on 伟思礼 there, I do see my actual user page. Is it a bug in how non-ASCII is being handled? 伟思礼 (talk) 16:09, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- And the first time I clicked "add topic" on this, it said "no longer logged in" 伟思礼 (talk) 16:09, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- Correct: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:伟思礼
- Doesn't exist? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/伟思礼 伟思礼 (talk) 18:49, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- @伟思礼, this is Wikimedia Commons. Each project hosted by WMF has a separate namespace, including your User and User talk pages. Therefore, they are independent pages that can be different, or you may copy one to the other, if you desire them to match. You could also create a "master page" at Metawiki; that master page will be reflected on all other projects unless a local page supersedes it. For example, I've created such a page: meta:User:Elizium23. Therefore you can achieve consistency, without needing to keep dozens/hundreds of pages in sync.
- That being said, it's true your user page doesn't exist yet on Commons. However, you've edited many different wikis so far, in your tenure of 7 years. Your user page does exist on enwiki, as well as Wiktionary. Take a look. Enjoy. Elizium23 (talk) 19:26, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

Merging video history
Hi. Is it possible to "move" a video "into" another one and merge their edit histories? I uploaded a version of better quality (File:2016-04-04 Venezuela - Operación Liberación del Pueblo.webm) of an existing video (File:Venezuela Operación Liberación del Pueblo.webm), but other than that they're duplicates. Many thanks in advance. NoonIcarus (talk) 11:36, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- They are both uplaoded by you. Are you really concerned to merge the histories rather than keep them in two separate places (it can be done, but it's a pain to do)? If not, the old version can just be turned into a redirect. - Jmabel ! talk 19:13, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: If it isn't against Commons policy to have duplicate files, even with different resolutions, I don't mind keeping both files, especially if a merge is so difficult. Maybe I could also add {{Other versions}} in the description? I'm up for whatever seems best in this case. --NoonIcarus (talk) 14:04, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @NoonIcarus: {{Other versions}} could be OK, but I don't see what is so interesting in https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Venezuela_Operaci%C3%B3n_Liberaci%C3%B3n_del_Pueblo.webm&action=history that it is important to make sure it is in the history of the preferred version. Advice on type of video to upload & text in video
Hi,
I have video of bird behavior that I'd like to upload. The behavior is probably seen better when played at 25% normal speed (partly because the video is shaky, albeit stabilized and partly because normal speed is just too fast to see what's happening).
Would it be more appropriate to:
- upload only the 25% speed video
- upload only the normal speed video
- upload a single video with both 25% and then normal speed
Also, I try not to embed text into my video clips, but I'm wondering if it's frowned upon to embed text in the video indicating "25% normal speed".
Not sure if there's a "style guide" for video uploads.
Thanks for any suggestions Pdanese (talk) 13:58, 30 June 2024 (UTC)

- @Bayayaku: What is the copyright status of the pictures in question? If the artist died less than 70 years ago, then the work is almost certainly still in copyright and you would need a license from the heir to the artist's intellectual property rights. - Jmabel ! talk 19:53, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- Some of the artists are deceased while others are still alive. Do I need an official, legalized document from the artist or their legal successor, or would an email confirmation be sufficient? What about the owners of the paintings? Do I need any approval from them? Bayayaku (talk) 07:29, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
- You'd need one of two things (either should suffice):
- The license is clearly stated on a page clearly under control of the artist or their heir (e.g. the artist's own website; a public-facing post on the artist's social media; etc.). If we have that, then anyone can upload citing that as a source.
- Email sent by the artist or heir to VRT granting a specific, Commons-compatible free license. The process is described in some detail at COM:VRT. Вікісховище:Волонтерська служба зв'язку appears to be only very partially translated, but may be some help for what they need to write. If someone reads Russian better than they read English, Commons:Волонтёрская команда содействия appears to be fully translated.

- Thank you for providing detailed information. Bayayaku (talk) 10:59, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
- You'd need one of two things (either should suffice):
- Some of the artists are deceased while others are still alive. Do I need an official, legalized document from the artist or their legal successor, or would an email confirmation be sufficient? What about the owners of the paintings? Do I need any approval from them? Bayayaku (talk) 07:29, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
Photograph of prominent person used by permission of his estate
I'm working with the Lunenburg Art Gallery Society trying to get a page created for Earl Bailly, 1903-1977. The society were granted stewardship of his estate by the remaining family members Suzanne Bailly and Ron Bailly. They have a large collection of photographs and paintings that they own the rights to, although they've been shared publicly for many years. How do we obtain official permission to add these images? Artstoronto (talk) 15:56, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Artstoronto Hello! I see you have uploaded a couple. It's quite possible the society has authorized you to do this, but the source clearly states "Copyright ©2024 The Lunenburg Art Gallery Society. All rights reserved. Please do not reproduce any image without permission from the artist."
- These photos may be deleted from Commons sooner or later, unless you can show you have the right to "give them away." I recommend you use the tool at COM:VRT/CONSENT to do so, it will help you do so by non-public mail contact. Another way is that www.lunenburgartgallery.com creates a page on the website with the pictures you want to "donate", and state on it that the pics are released under the acceptable license of your choice (like the one you used on your uploads, or something else from Commons:Licensing#Well-known_licenses). Then that page can be given as "Source".
- Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:45, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- Also, I assume you mean you'd like to create a Wikipedia article about him. This is a GREAT idea, and I'm interested in helping you do it. If you want, come and talk about it at my WP-talkpage: User talk:Gråbergs Gråa Sång. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:07, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- I would very much like to! I am a director of the Lunenburg Art Gallery Society so I guess I gave myself permission. I also wrote the © at the bottom, but that's meant to apply to our member's artwork located elsewhere on the site. We have the ownership of 100+ photos, on the condition from his family that we use them to promote Earl's legacy.
- Every few months I look again at trying to create a page and get so overwhelmed. We have tried to hire editors but it's become impossible to distinguish between real help and scammers so I've given up trying. If you have any advice I'd love to hear it! Artstoronto (talk) 20:53, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Artstoronto It is certainly simplest if you can indicate the licensing status on the source page. (Similarly for any other already-published photos you wish to upload.) Otherwise, you'd really need to go through the COM:VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 22:38, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

- @Jmabel per COM:CROWN, this 1973 pic [12] should be ok to upload, right? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:23, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- Wrong country, but it could be PD-Canada if it was published before 1974 by the NS government. Same thing for the 1953 photo at the same source. Personally, I think that in general the photos by an information service of a government can be assumed to have been made to be published and to have been published soon after creation, but other users may prefer explicit evidence of publication. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:21, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Asclepias Details, details... but yes, wrong country. However, PD-Canada-Crown would seem to be the right crown. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:37, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

- @Jmabel, Earl Bailly is now an article. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:11, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Sputnik
I have a tape of early (1957) recordings of Sputnik-signals and would like to upload them as a mp3-file. But I am not allowed to do upload a mp3-file. WurzelSepp999 (talk) 17:46, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- Once you have uploaded 500 files, you will also be allowed to upload mp3-files. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 06:05, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
