Scan the World is a non-profit initiative whose mission is to archive the world’s objects of cultural significance using 3D scanning technologies to produce content suitable for 3D printing. With over 10,000 artefacts digitized from across the globe Scan the World serves as the largest platform of its kind; its collection spans private and public collections from every continent, including hosting works from supporting contemporary artists.

Scan the World aims to help as many museums, galleries, artists and private collectors in grasping new technologies as well as digitizing their collections in 3D. All of this work is undertaken for free for the sake of sharing and openness of culture.

History

[edit]
3D Model of Michelangelo's Pietà

Scan the World started in June 2014 as a collaborative project between Jonathan Beck and MyMiniFactory, the world's largest curated platform of 3D printable models. To collect the first few hundred models, the initiative started with unofficial scanning meetups 'Scanathons' in museums and galleries across London. These models would then be uploaded to Scan the World's database before being presented to the institution who's collections were scanned.

Since then, Scan the World has worked alongside various institutions on a professional capacity, such as The Victoria and Albert Museum, Statens Museum for Kunst, Musée Saint-Raymond and Musée de Mougins.

In January 2018, Scan the World began to roll out their data adopting an open license for the majority of their scanned artefacts.
