Commons:WikiProject Automobiles
WikiProject Automobiles exists to co-ordinate the effort to compile images on all types and classes of automobile, automotive parts and technology. Additionally, it has the goal of presenting all images in a consistent, legible and informative categorical format.
Thing you can do
[edit]- Identify automobiles from Category:Unidentified automobiles.
- Activate the gadgets called Cat-a-lot and HotCat in your user account preferences to assist with adding categories.
- Crop and edit images, CropTool.
Project members
[edit]You can become a member by placing the "WikiProject Automobiles" userbox on your userpage by simply adding the template. It adds you to the category of members:
- {{WikiProject Automobiles}}
- Or if you don't like the userbox, you can add yourself to the category by adding [[Category:WikiProject Automobiles members]] to your userpage.
Conventions
[edit]Images
[edit]- Always use free images; images of vehicles are seldom irreplaceable. Do not use "fair use" promotional images of vehicles.
- Use images of cars in good, complete, clean, and original condition whenever possible. Avoid pictures of customized cars (e.g. incorrect wheels or other aftermarket components like bodykits) as they are not representative of the vehicle's factory specification.
- The file name must clearly identify the vehicle. The year or model year and trim level should be included if the information is available. If not available, use a general descriptor such as "1997-2002" to refer accurately to the depicted vehicle. For example, File:1997-2000 Toyota Camry (SXV20R) CSX sedan (2011-07-17).jpg.
Here are some things to keep in mind for creating an image of a car:
- The lighting of a car is critical to obtaining a good image. Try to take pictures in the middle of the day or under bright but indirect lights. Make sure the sun is behind you—do not shoot into the sun.
- Make sure the car is entirely in frame and is not obscured with objects, people, mud, snow, etc.
- Crop out distracting elements like parking lots, objects, or other cars.
- Do not take photos through window glass, fog, or with poor focus.
Categories
[edit]Categories should be relatively standard all round. The make, model, (model code/generation) format should be used, although the "(model code/generation)" parameter is not compulsory when few images exist in a "make, model" category.
To correct category names that are non-compliant with WikiProject standards:
- Go to: User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands#Category move commands
- Insert the following:
{{move cat|old name|new name|Disambiguation as per convention: [[Commons:WikiProject Automobiles#Categories]]}}
- The rename will be completed automatically through use of a bot.
Make, model, (model code)
[edit]In most cases, this format is preferable, but it does not work for every vehicle.
- Category:Toyota RAV4: is the main category.
- Category:Toyota RAV4 (XA10): is sub-category for the first generation Toyota RAV4, with "XA10" being the model code (written in parentheses).
- Category:Toyota RAV4 (XA20): is sub-category for the second generation Toyota RAV4, with "XA20" being the model code (written in parentheses).
Make, model, (year)
[edit]When a model code is unavailable or unclear, use the vehicle's release year instead:
- Category:Mitsubishi Lancer: is the main category.
- Category:Mitsubishi Lancer (1973): is sub-category for the first generation Mitsubishi Lancer (with the year written in parentheses).
- Category:Mitsubishi Lancer (1979): is sub-category for the second generation Mitsubishi Lancer (with the year written in parentheses).
