English: Newsreels in which Dutch subjects of a certain week are presented.
Breach in the dike along the Muntendamerdiep near Zuidbroek in Groningen. SHOTS: - they try to mend the hole in the evening: lit by floodlight, soldiers throw sandbags, stones and pieces of rubble into it. But the hole remains; - the next day the amount of damage is visible: the land is flooding, farms become isolated. Because the water only rises slowly, there is still time for a rescue operation: the inhabitants of the farms, who were evacuated, return to get personal belongings and safeguard the agricultural products. They wade throuhgh the water with wheelbarrows filled with household goods and shovel pitted potatoes on a cart. Pairs of horses, half in the water on the swampy ground, pull the carts away; - footage of the floodings in the south of the country: the flood-meadows and farmlands along the Maas are flooded; a boy cycles by it.

Dijkdoorbraak aan het Muntendammerdiep bij Zuidbroek in Groningen. SHOTS: - in de avond wordt geprobeerd het gat te dichten: militairen storten er, bij het licht van schijnwerpers, zandzakken, stenen en stukken puin in. Het gat blijft echter open; - de volgende dag wordt de schade goed zichtbaar: het land loopt steeds verder onder water, boerderijen liggen geïsoleerd. Omdat het water maar heel langzaam stijgt is er nog tijd voor een reddingsoperatie: de bewoners van de boerderijen, aanvankelijk geëvacueerd, keren terug om persoonlijke spullen op te halen en landbouwprodukten in veiligheid te brengen. Ze waden met kruiwagens met huisraad door het water en scheppen ingekuilde aardappelen op karren. Tweespannen paarden, half in het water voortploeterend in de drassige modder, trekken de karren weg; - beelden van de overstromingen in het zuiden van het land: langs de Maas staan de uiterwaarden en landerijen blank; een jongetje fietst er voorbij. |
