English: Danse des Ouléd-Naïd. Produced by Pathé Frères in 1902. Catalog number : 795. Hand colored by Segundo de Chomón in his Barcelona workshop, along with the dozens of female staff workers he hired to handle the job.
Segundo Víctor Aurelio Chomón y Ruiz (also Chomont or Chaumont, French, 17 October 1871 – 2 May 1929) was a pioneering Spanish film director, cinematographer and screenwriter. He produced many short films in France while working for Pathé Frères and has been compared to Georges Méliès, due to his frequent camera tricks and optical illusions. He is regarded as the most significant Spanish silent film director in an international context. The Ouled Naïl (/ˌuːlɛd ˈnaɪl/; Arabic: أولاد نايل) are a tribe and a tribal confederation living in the Ouled Naïl Range, Algeria. The tribe originated a style of music, sometimes known as Bou Saâda music, after a town near their homeland. In belly dancing, the term refers to a style of dance originated by the Ouled Naïl. This short film features several dancers from different countries: first an Arabian dancer, then an Algerian belly dancer, and Ouled Naïl dancer, and last some Scottish highlanders in kilts doing a jig. |
