Pay attention to licensing
|
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.
File:Photographic portrait of Belle Epoque artist Lucien Métivet.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file. If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

Copyright status: File:Rete Adriatica 362.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Rete Adriatica 362.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
Wdwd (talk) 19:02, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
- The appropriate license is {{Anonymous-EU}} ; it's corrected. A1AA1A (talk) 20:24, 12 March 2016 (UTC)
Category:William Anslow Thornley and Category:William Thornley, to merge
[edit]I believe these two categories are for the same artist, who used quite a large number of names derived from William A. Thornley, and according to one source had (probably) William Thornbery as real name. For example here, museum page for some of the information I have found; also here for a commercial site rather than a museum, but agreeing with dates and clearly independent research.
So I believe the two categories should be merged. Charles Matthews (talk) 17:49, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!
[edit]You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear A1AA1A,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:42, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
Uploading better versions
[edit]Hello! Please don't upload the same file under a different name. Overwrite the current version with the better version. It makes things a lot easier for all of us. Thanks! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 21:18, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

category distinction
[edit]Hello! Can you please explain to me the difference between Category:Females viewed from behind in art and Category:Female human backs in art? Is the latter supposed to be restricted to views that show only the back (not legs or other parts)? Or is it supposed to be restricted to nude backs? Or is the only distinction human vs. non-human? Or something else entirely? Thanks! Laura1822 (talk) 12:29, 6 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Laura1822, I though that people or female back refered to the body part: nude or partially nude backs, as main subject. --A1AA1A (talk) 05:54, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you! If you look at the categories, I think you'll see that files aren't categorized that way. I think adding the word "nude" to Category:Female human backs in art would help clarify this a lot. Ditto the male counterpart. Also, there are several similar categories outside of the "in art" structure, and we would benefit from adding corresponding "in art" categories. (For example, Category:Standing females seen from behind and Category:Rear views of nude or partially nude women.) I can tell you that I was looking for a place to put back-view fashion plates and had quite a difficult time finding Category:Females viewed from behind in art. What do you think? Laura1822 (talk) 08:11, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hello Laura, thank you for creating the male counterpart Category:Males viewed from behind in art. If we want a better symmetry with general categories, we can move these F/M viewed from behind in art to Rear views of F/M in art. It could be clearer. For me (I'm French, it's perhaps culturally sensitive), Rear views and Human backs are very different categories: the subject of the first one is persons (with a particular angle of view) while the second one focus on the body part: not the rear face of the whole body but more specifically the rear face of the trunk, from neck to buttocks. Of course nudity helps to see backs but is not necessary at all. It is possible to appreciate a posture or movement of a dressed back. Furthermore there is no category for nude people viewed from behind. So I don't find useful to add the "nude" specification for human backs categories. In my opinion several files must be moved from human back to rear view. Tell me if you agree. --A1AA1A (talk) 08:06, 8 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hello! Thank you for doing some work in these categories. I understand the distinction you make between the two categories, and it is more or less the same in English, though the phrases "rear view" and "back view" are equivalent. I'm happy with the way the categories are now, though there's always room for expansion of the "in art" categories to make a parallel structure to the non-"in-art" categories. It's a never-ending work in progress, of course. Thanks for your help! Laura1822 (talk) 14:24, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
