Football Unites article and images

Hi - thanks for the advice regarding uploading images.

I'm a novice with regards to uploading to Wikipedia and knowing what do to about copyrights and such. Therefore if you could help me out a bit I'd be very grateful.

I am a volunteer for Football Unites Racism Divides and at their request I am establishing a Wikipedia page for them (while, of course, trying to remain as neutral and factual as possible). I have written most of the content but I'm still yet to 'launch' it onto Wikipedia properly until I have included some photos to flesh out the article and prevent it being too text-heavy.

The organisation have given me full permission to use their photographs from their website on the Wikipedia article (as well as one or two photos of my own, which I took and therefore aren't copyrighted etc) but I need to know exactly how to go about this process.

I'm very confused by it all - there are a lot of terms which simply don't make any sense to me on all the information on Wikipedia regarding copyrights, etc! So if you were able to give me a watered-down walk-through about the best way to upload photos given my particular circumstances, then I'd be very grateful.

Thanks, Rich

Hello Rich,
The problem is very simple, you volunteer for the organisation that means that you don't have permission to use those files so you cant upload them under a free license. Wikimedia is very very careful when it comes to copyright because when its on Commons everybody can use a file for commercional and private use so we have a policy for this kind of stuf.
Your boss should send a email to permissions@wikimedia.org where he gives his full permission to use this files under a free license, when he did this you will get a email back (it could take up some time) this email contains a number, when you upload the files and place that number in the permissions field everything will be okay.
Until then you cant upload them. I hoped my answer helped.

Doors of Perception book cover

Why was the new Doors of Perception book cover image deleted? The article on the book is subject to peer review Wikipedia:Peer review/The Doors of Perception/archive1 and two reviewers said the article would be improved by replacing the current book cover image with the cover from the first edition. The image seems to meet all the criteria for inclusion of any other book cover. --Evenmadderjon (talk) 20:39, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
Book covers are uploaded under the fair use terms, they are not accepted here on Commons and you should upload the file on the English Wikipedia locally than everything should be fine.

From what I saw, there was no speedy deletion tag and there was a license for the image. I am not sure why it was speedy deleted, so I like to hear if it was an honest mistake or a template or category was snuck in. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 22:16, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Edit request

Hi Abigor, I was just wondering if my request at MediaWiki_talk:Edittools#Outdent_.2B_others was easier to implement now. Testing went fine.  Docu  at 04:47, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Docu,
Thanks for placing more information by the request, I did the request now and everything should be updated.
I still believe that it could be easy to mess up in the mediawiki namespace and a error could hit a lot of users so if I'm not sure I always request more information ;)
Its better to check ten times and cut once, than don't check and cut wrong.
Best regards,
Huib talk 08:37, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
I understand. Already they are not easy to debug if they are one's own edits, it's even more risky when doing them for other users. Few admins actually venture into doing them for other users. Personally, I usually try them at test.wikipedia.org before posting them. For various reasons not everything works there as it does here. Thanks for your help!  Docu  at 19:58, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Royal Navy ships

Hi. On August 3 you deleted a number of photographs of Royal Navy ships:

 1. File:HMS Triumph (1903) on maneuvers 1908.jpg
 2. File:HMS Triumph (1903) firing at Tsingtao October 1914.jpg
 3. File:HMS Triumph (1903) as completed January 1904.jpg
 4. File:HMS Swiftsure (1903) laid up awaiting disposal 1919.jpg
 5. File:HMS Prince of Wales (1902) awaiting scrapping.jpg
 6. File:HMS Mars (1896) with 12-inch guns removed 1915-1916.jpg
 7. File:HMS Majestic (1895) capsized.jpg
 8. File:HMS Lord Nelson (1906) and HMS Agamemnon (1906) on patrol in Dardanelles 1915.jpg
 9. File:HMS Irresistible (1898) survivors on HMS Agamemnon (1906) quarterdeck March 1915.jpg
 10. File:HMS Irresistible (1898) in 1908.jpg
 11. File:HMS Goliath (1898) in 1907.jpg
 12. File:HMS Glory (1899) in December 1900.jpg
 13. File:HMS Cornwallis (1901) firing at Dardanelles 18-19 February 1915.jpg

Judging by the file names, the photographs were taken during manoeuvres or in the course of battle, which means they were taken by Royal Navy personnel, and therefore subject to Crown copyright, which expires 50 years after publication. Therefore, the files are now in public domain; please undelete them. — Tetromino (talk) 10:27, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Undelete please!

Hello Abigor. Just minutes ago I was notified that an image I created for Wikipedia was deleted because of the lack of license. I wasn't aware that the license wasn't added automatically! When I uploaded the image I chose "It is entirely my own work" so I never thought the license was missing. I thought it would automatically set the image to "Public Domain" or something.

I'm talking about a barnstar File:Mexican Barnstar National Merit.svg. I do not have a copy of that image I created, so I hope that there's a feature such as "undelete". OMG. Thanks for reading this. AlexCovarrubias (talk) 10:46, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello, it seems you have deleted the file because of a missing license. Has there been a dicussion about this deletion somewhere? I'm sure to remember that when loading it up the first time I forgot the license, but then uploaded it a second time under a license "creative commons by say 3.0". So after this second upload I assumed that everything would be allright.

I would hope we could save the picture for Wikipedia somehow, thanks, --Rosenkohl (talk) 13:43, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
I undeleted the file and placed the correct license on the image page so everything will be okay now.
The file was marked with Nld for almost a month and was scheduled for deletion two weeks ago. According to the Commons Policies we don't have discussions for files marked as no source, no license or no permission files like that just get deleted after 7 days (when there is no backlog)

Merci Tryphon, pour cette traduction. --Toubabmaster (talk) 14:29, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,

I Don't speak or understand any French so I will answer in English.

You uploaded lots of files to Wikimedia Commons, you uploaded them under a free license and a free license cant be revoked, but you have been in a dispute on the fr.wiki where you decided to leave Wikipedia and want all your files deleted and there is the problem.

You tagged all your files for speedy deletion and you have been told that this is not the way to handle and you even ended up blocked after warnings. I reverted all your edits because you again tagged files for speedy deletion (You could have been blocked for that...) If you want your files deleted you should make a Deletion request so the Commons Community can decide to keep or delete the files, would you again tag them for speedy deletion I will again revert. Please play by the rules and make a normal deletion request.

Best regards, Huib talk Abigor @ meta 18:25, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

--Toubabmaster (talk) 23:40, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

No, this is not a plain simple copyvio case, when you uploaded the files you pressed the upload button, when you pressed that button you agreed to upload it under a free license, and you told us that you are the author of the files and now you say you aren't. Like I told you on COM:AN you should file a Deletion request where you say that you uploaded all your files as copyvios, you should give a source where you have found the files and than the community will decide if they are copyvios or not.

Thanks for pointing out that some files are already deleted, I'm very happy to undelete them if you continue with this behaviour. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 06:43, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

--Toubabmaster (talk) 10:35, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I totally don't understand what you are saying, this discussion is over since you seem to understand English but keep returning answers in French. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 13:18, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi,

what is wrong with my uploaded pics - logos. These pics are from my company and I need them for my wiki entry.

greets

jtjlmue

Hi,
Your Logo's has been deleted according to Commons policies, when you want to upload a Logo's into Commons it needs to be text only or permission should be send to OTRS.
We have a lot of reasons why we cant just take your word when you say you work for the organisation or when you say you have permission, I guess you do understand that we cant just check if you work there and we cant just check if you have permission so you will need to send a email to permissions-commons [at] wikimedia [dot] org, the email should look like:
Hello,
I want to release a logo <link to the logo>, so it can be used in Commons. I understand that when I release the image under the <license you want to use> it cant be revoked and I give everybody permission to use, edit and share-alike for personal and commercional use according to the rules writen down in the license.
I have permission for releasing to logo.
Best regards,
<your name> <your function>
You should send this email with a e-mail address that could be matched to the organisation so our volunteers know you work for the organisation. When our volunteers have seen your email, the will check if everything is okay and if so they will undelete the file.
Best regards, Huib talk Abigor @ meta 15:07, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

An Artist Photo Deleting ( Elle Pikul)

Dear Sirs, Please help me upload an artist's photo for I don't understand how to do it, lost in instructions and failed to use Flickr for this cause as well. I have already uploaded the article itself but do not see it in Wikipedia either. I would like to make 3 new pages: about myself, my wife and our band. We have the articles and photos ready, but got stuck with the Wikipedia procedures. The photos we have have been made for us by our friends Ksenia and Serhat Kavas. These photos are on Flickr and we have the right to use them because this was a paid photo shoot for our personal use. Thank you for your assistance. Kind regards, Anatoly Grinberg (Fire Piranhas)

Hello,
I'm sorry to say but I cant help you untill you have the articles, we have a policy here on Commons that we only accept things that are in our project scope this means that you should have articles where the files can be used before we accept the files, otherwhise they will be deleted again.
Since Wikimedia Commons only hosts files I guess you are looking for the English Wikipedia, you should ask for help there and when you have articles I will be happy to help you upload those files.
Best regards,
Huib talk Abigor @ meta 00:08, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

photos have copyrights now

in reason of someone's against, all the photos i uploaded now have copyrighhts, please do not change the licence if you are not the owner.Kalon macau (talk) 06:12, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello Kalon macau,
When you upload a file on Commons you give it a license, this license has to be a free license according to this page. This license means that everybody can edit, use, sell, alter, share-alike your files without the need to pay you a fee as long as they respect the license, this means that they need to say the source, and give the author by every use of the file.
All free license have the same rule, they cant be revoked this means when you upload a file it will always stay here on Commons and on the rest of the internet under this license so people don't have to worry that somebody changes the license what would mean that the files cant be used anymore.
This means in simple that you cant change the license of the files here on Commons, you agreed with a license and that cant be revoked nor changed, this means also that you cant demand us to not edit your files and remove a watermark or other stuff. This means also that I rollback all your changes since they are against the license. Please do not upload new files here on Commons if you do not longer agree with free culture but the files already uploaded are under a license and will stay under that license.
Best,
Huib talk Abigor @ meta 07:08, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Unused duplicates deleted, but were still in use

A load of images from the Popular Science Monthly have been deleted by yourself as "unused duplicates", resulting in CommonsDelinker going around and removing them from pages where they were being used. E.g. see [2] and [3]. I can't find any information about why they were deleted, and I have no idea how to go about fixing this (is there a commons relinker tool if you undelete the images? I suspect there isn't, but there should be...). Can you help? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 08:47, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Mike,
Damn, I really don't understand this, I did a check on the complete list of images and the only result I got was one use on a talkpage :-S . I will go trough the logs today and start fixing things.
I am really really sorry for the inconvenience.

Renaming files

Hello Abigor

I will need admin's tools to view, delete, undelete djvu files when necessary. I have never had to protect one of them until now, but when it happens that a vandal harms a djvu file, I may know quickly if it is necessary to protect it and/or block the vandal and I may have to react quickly. So I'd like to keep the admin's tools if it is possible. Regards, --Zyephyrus (talk) 09:50, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
BitDefender isn't free software at least the site says all rights reserved what means that you cant make a screenshot with (parts) of the software on it and release it under a free license.
The only way to get it on Commons is asking the company or organisation permission to release a file under a free license and send the permission to otrs.

Do you know who exactly is the copyright holder of this creation that you deleted? Please, stop overestimating the copyrights! This hinders the work of authors in Wikipedia projects. --MrPanyGoff (talk) 08:46, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
When you scan or re-create a concertticket you don't get any copyrights, the copyrights belong to the concertorganisation or the band, that means you need to get formal permission and send it to OTRS.
Please stop under estimating copyrights because it brings the Foundation in danger for legal problems.

Hello, Abigor/Archives/2010!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

No Personal Attacks please?

You came in and wiped out all my images. To hell with you. Editor182 (talk) 15:04, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
Yes I did, because like explained here User_talk:Herbythyme#Deletion_of_Image your files are COM:DW and therefor copyright violations.
If you don't mind I rather stay here on earth instead of going to hell.
Best,
Huib talk Abigor @ meta 15:17, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

You didn't have to be an inconsiderate prick. Didn't you think that maybe I didn't have a copy of all those images? I could have salvaged copies and uploaded them direct to Wikipedia, where they don't have a problem with my images. Oh, you don't like my tone, do you? What are you going to do? Ban me from Commons? Oh no! And I was just going to upload more photos here, what a bummer. But what about this [4] and this [5]?

Plus plenty of other images on Commons that are in the same category as my own? No, you just chose to wipe out all my photos at once. Not only that, but without the courtesy of saying anything first. This was a personal attack. You're a mass joke. Bye bye. Editor1822 (talk) 23:21, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Brad Mays photo removed

Abigor - Could you please explain why you removed the photo of subject director Brad Mays from subject's Wiki page or, more to the point, how the photo was a clear copyright violation and required speedy delivery?

This is a friendly question, and I assume good faith on your part. But I am a bit confused.

Thanks very much. Evalpor (talk) 15:07, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
Thanks for assuming good faith, that always nice when people start like that because normally people come to here and are like "Why the F*ck did you delete my image, go to H*LL" and this reminds me that there are also good people.
The problem with the file is very easy to explain, the picture contained a photo shot from the television with Brad on it, normally taking a picture of a person would't be a problem but when you take a picture of the tv the television company owns all the rights so it cant be released under a free license and that made it a copyvio.
Best regards,
Huib talk Abigor @ meta 15:13, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, as I suspected. Abigor, you are in error, my friend. That was a production monitor, and Brad Mays' image was seen through the monitor while filming a piece for Annenberg Media. If you look carefully, you'll see that it was a Sony production monitor, and not a television set. There is no copyright violation in this particular case, because there was no broadcast content, and no content, save for a closed circuit image. How about an undeletion? Evalpor (talk) 15:31, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
Abigor asked me to comment here, and I'll point out that any creative work, whether broadcast or not, is copyrighted. Stifle (talk) 20:19, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
I undeleted and moved it to: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Bradmays.jpg Huib talk Abigor @ meta 20:28, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of the logos

Why is this Logo copyrighted material but the Logo of "Popolo della Liberta" (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peopleoffreedom.jpg) not? Maybe I have chosen the wrong licenses, I don't know. I'll try again to upload the logo, I'll choose the same license and same settings as the second logo has (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Peopleoffreedom.jpg). M456 (talk) 19:43, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
The logo you are linking is okay for Commons because its a very simple, its only tekst with no images nor special stuff so because of that its okay to use files like that on Commons.
The file you uploaded contains drawings and stuff other than only text because of that it isn't simple enough to be in the public domain and is copyrighted.
Best,

Ticket to the cinema to see the 3D movie Avatar

Hi. Why is the whole mass of users such tickets may be placed in my case such impertinence? [6] Maybe because I'm user of the Polish? --Alians PL (talk) 22:17, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

example
Hello,
I deleted both your tickets because they contained copyrighted parts, unlike the other tickets in the category that are text only.
The Law is pretty simple about this, it says you cant ask copyright on simple shapes or text only stuff, so when you look at the image on the right you can notice its only text, thats the same for the other files in that category (exept three but they will be deleted in a while). Your files contained images, and images aren't simple enough to be public domain and because of that your files are protected by copyright and cant be released into the public domain unless you have written permission from the right holder.
Just for the record I never base my deletions on religion or country of birth, there is one Commons and there are all people the same.
Best regards,
Huib talk Abigor @ meta 22:25, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, In that case, I was misled. directory contents first "Category:Culture_show_tickets", second, by an imprecise content of instruction Commons:Licensing => Acceptable licenses "Commons also allows works that are not protected by copyright (i.e. works in the public domain). Please read the section about public domain below.". By the way, the use of a licensed "This image was originally posted to Flickr by" to appeal to other resources in many cases is the use of the loophole. Postscript, hallmarks Printed on tickets, Should Be Differentiated terms of trademark-Brand, but also Specially adapted for the general public --Alians PL (talk) 23:13, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Apparently, trademarks used for information purposes do not enjoy copyright protection? http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright Unfortunately, the information in Wikipedia on copyright is not uniform in different languages. Poza tym, Dz.U. z 2006 r. Nr 90 poz. 631 Rozdział 1 Przedmiot prawa autorskiego Art.2. ust. 5. --Alians PL (talk) 01:07, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

another example
On Flickr the user needs to accept a license and promise that its own work also, therefor we can use a part of the files on Flickr because we know they are free, but even Flickr images get nuked because they do have a free license but are in problems with other laws. Every ticket containing a image of what ever kind is protected by copyright unless other stated on the ticked.
I want to remind you that Copyright and Trademark aren't the same, we have files here on Commons that doesn't have copyrights but do have a Trademark.
I evaluated the law your are citing with a friend who speaks Polish, but he came to the conclusion this law is about music, and soundtracks that cant be compared with the current situation of a movieticket.
Best,
Huib talk Abigor @ meta 05:42, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

The law was codified in the European Union directives, the "Project Commons Wikimedia" can afford to legal consultation and interpretation of specific provisions. Leave without comment. --Alians PL (talk) 13:13, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Money needed for legal consultation can go also to other things since all money is done by donations. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 13:20, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes, you understand correctly that there is no way this file can be uploaded on Commons, you could try uploading at http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%9E%D7%99%D7%95%D7%97%D7%93:%D7%94%D7%A2%D7%9C%D7%90%D7%94 but I don't know the policies they use. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 11:35, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Bouml

The PD-Text logo

Hi,

Please be careful not to delete again this logo, it's in public domain, but the software author wants it removed from Wikipedia, in a revenge action against the behavior of English Wikipedia contributors during a RfD.

Wikimedia Commons doesn't serve only Wikipédia, but also other wikis in the world, from the Wikimedia Foundation and elsewhere (last versions of MediaWiki allows to print directly Commons pictures).

Furthermore, delete a public domain image for copyvio is “rather strange”, isn't it? --Dereckson (talk) 12:39, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi,
I do not agree with you, this file isn't made in a standard font and it aren't just letters the letters have a kind of shape also, I believe it will pass the treshold and is copyrighted.
Best,
Huib talk Abigor @ meta 12:48, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Okay, that makes sense, I were in the hypothesis we all considered it as PD, as when several of us discussed the matter IRC 15 days ago. But the matter is still complicated:
 1. At upload time, the logo license could whether be considered as GPL (cf. old version of the legal mentions) whether not covered by the license, and so, all rights reserved.
 2. As we've different analysis of threshold of originality, a RfD makes sense. --Dereckson (talk) 13:08, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, the solution would be a RfD, because then we will get a community support in what ever direction it would go, shall I start a DR or will you do so? Huib talk Abigor @ meta 13:19, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I launched the RfD. --Dereckson (talk) 15:41, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi, you are false on several topics, the upload was done in 2008 after I changed the license and already removed the picture from one article speaking about Bouml, as I already written this image is not the logo of Bouml, and this is not just a text but a true picture more complicated than works of Kasimir Malevitch (for instance). Not respecting copyright your are 'pirates'. The behavior of admin of W. as no sense, when one wants to put an article you ask for to remove it, and when one wants to remove something you reintroduce it, you 'works against' in all cases. I am really dismay, I hate pirate attitude, I feel disgust that such a reaction I think I will stop to develop Bouml, and you will have articles and picture speaking about a project not exiting anymore 'thanks' to you ...Bruno pages (talk) 14:13, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Ehm, are you talking to me or talking to Dereckson its not clear to me. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 15:42, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Both of you. Furthermore Dereckson put this discussion here, so I suppose my answer (unfortunately probably again useless) have to be done here, not on Dereckson talk page. Bruno pages (talk) 17:35, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Okay, so I deleted the file and I am wrong, so you want to keep the file here? Dereckson wants the file kept because its free... he is also wrong? that impossible. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 17:37, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
If you delete the file you are not wrong. Dereckson's arguments explaining why to not delete the file are wrong.Bruno pages (talk) 17:58, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Abigor, thanks for explain me about the copyright and the logo image.

Now, how cuold I get again to my page to edit the text I puted??

Thanks Jackie

Hi Jackie,

Why did you deleted my picture!

Hello there was nothing wrong with my picture! There wasnt any windows things only capture of sumatrapdf window! please explain. --Olli (talk) 05:46, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
Please double check your file.
There is a blue border arround of it with a 2 cm blue top with the three buttons, thats windows and windows is copyrighted by Microsoft so that part should be removed. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 05:55, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Why it is so accurate?? Please remove these photos then also!! Category:Screenshots_of_free_software example File:Amaya_inuse.png File:Sumatra_PDF_1.0.png both of those photo contain windows bars!! --Olli (talk) 05:58, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
The rules are as strict as needed, because the law doesn't make a exception for a little bit copyrighted, or things are copyrighted or they are not. When you remove the bars you are okay to upload. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 06:06, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
But WHY there is other pictures what are making same "mistake"!!! can you explain this did you even checked my links --Olli (talk) 11:55, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
I checked your links and taken action in multiple cases. [7] please check first for saying I didn't check. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 12:03, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

you have lots of work if you are so accurate! there is only a color what you say that its copyrighted what is this! --Olli (talk) 12:04, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
The color isn't important, its about the top side with the windows part (3 buttons!), but I'm done discussing what I need to do now, its not your job to tell me what to do. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 12:08, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Why you deleted my picture but not the other what i marked deleted needed! you could fix my picture too. --Olli (talk) 05:21, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Again, the other file got deleted also and is reuploaded in a fixed version, you can go on waisting our time here or you can crop you file and everthing is good. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 10:37, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Vietsoftware

Hi,

I had created a French page on Wikipedia for a company: Vietsoftware International. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietsoftware_international But when I create in English, you delete my page and when I upload an image of this company (logo for example) you delete me too. So I wanted to know why? And what can I do for this page can work. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Eloi_de_Susanne Thanks. Cordialement

Hello,
I deleted the logo because that is Fair use material and that is not accepted here on Commons and as far as I know its not accepted on the French Wikipedia also. Because the logo is protected by copyright by the company you cant place a look-a-like or a copy of the logo online in a free license. I would advice you to read this page for more information about what we accept.
I can assure you, I didn't delete anything else that a file, so your page must have been deleted by a other administrator.

Coke bottles

Coke bottles are, for the most part, public domain under US law and the files you deleted have already been DR'd in the past. Please see Commons:Undeletion_requests/Current_requests#File:Bottles_ofCoca-Cola.jpg_and_File:Coke_003.jpg. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 01:23, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

I do not agree with the undeletion, or any discussion about the bottles but i will not put any more time in it, we have a policy that says we cant use DW and I acted by that policy. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 10:35, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Deletion

Could you let me know if these files was tagged with a speedy tag or anything, my talk page was not notified of their problem or deletion. File:Generic Propecia from India, Finpecia.jpg, File:Propecia Bottle and pills.jpg, File:Propecia Bottle closeup.jpg and File:Finpecia from India is Cheap Propecia.jpg, although I don't see any big need to fight about it, I don't entirely agree that a those pictures violated COM:DW. Was there a discussion that resulted in the deletion of these? I just feel a little blind-sided without being notified other then seeing it in my watchpage history. — raeky (talk | edits) 05:17, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi,
There is no need for a fight, I deleted them after they where nominated as COM:DW per policy we can speedy delete those without a discussion so that is pretty much what happened, it seem that some people don't agree with it so maybe you are intressted in this.
Best,
Huib talk Abigor @ meta 10:35, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
None of those logos pass the threshold of creativity enough to be copyrighted. Trademarked, sure, but copyrighted no. They're just simple text and geometric shapes. Theres nothing derivative work about it, it's a picture of a box that contains, (and in the case of the Indian generic, unlikely even trademarked) trademarked logo. The logo isn't copyright-able. It has nothing to do with Coke where the logo, which is original enough to be copyrighted, is so old it's out of copyright anymore. — raeky (talk | edits) 12:33, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Also my question was also who nominated it for speedy, and didn't notify my talk page per policy/courtesy? — raeky (talk | edits) 12:37, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
It was done by 204.74.221.50 (talk · contribs). Huib talk Abigor @ meta 14:24, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Interesting that hes done absolutely no other edits other then marking things for speedy... but irregardless these images are not copyright violations since there is no copyright being violated. Which step do you suggest I take if your unwilling to reverse your decision? — raeky (talk | edits) 14:31, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
A relevant discussion is going on at en:Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions#Pharmaceuticals about the copyright status of such images. — raeky (talk | edits) 14:33, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
The right place to request a undeletion is COM:UNDEL, The discussion on the en.wikipedia is very intresting, as far as I know wo do not accept images like that. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 16:11, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
You mean you think Commons doesn't allow trademarks? Because I fail to see what is copyrighted in these images? — raeky (talk | edits) 19:08, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Commons accepts trademarks, but I do not agree with out that the logo isn't copyrightable or the label. Huib talk Abigor @ meta 19:55, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
I think it would be prudent to restore all the related pharmaceutical packaging images that was recently deleted as being DR's and nominating them all for DR, that way consensus can be reached if they violate any copyrights or not. I know several of Editor182's pictures was also deleted, and not sure what else. — raeky (talk | edits) 20:25, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Terek Sandpiper image removed by Commons-Delinker though rename was requested

Hi Abigor, I saw you deleted File:Limicola falcinellus P4233571.jpg. It has been renamed, see Deletion log. I guess something went badly wrong because, although the file had been used by many wikiprojects, Commons-delinker removed it completely from all articles without replacing it.

As I was the guy who requested the rename I would offer to help. Is there a way to get a list of all articles from which the delinker has removed it, so I could readd manually? Of course all Terek Sandpiper articles are possible candidates but there might be more removals than just those. Thanks for helping --Burkhard (talk) 17:14, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello,
I'm very sorry to hear that it went wrong, I tried to look at the delinker log ([9] loads very slow) but I cant find the entry for this file therefor I cant find the pages where it is delinked,
My only advice now is ask user:Multichill, he owns the bot and maybe he have a good log, just let me know when you have a list, I will help replace those files.
Best,
Huib talk Abigor @ meta 18:11, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
I followed your advice and contacted Multichill. In the meantime I have manually readded the image to all articles where delinker removed it. Please take a look at Multichill's comment. As I don't have file mover priviledges I am not really familiar with all steps involved in a rename, but reading his comment I wonder if there shouldn't be mechanism in place to mark images in the process of being moved with some "Don't delete yet" tag somehow. Anyhow, the problem should be resolved by now. Regards, --Burkhard (talk) 10:08, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
I don't handle rename requests normally, but yes I think there should be a system like that, but the file I deleted was broken and I guess there is a bug somewhere in the software that makes a image "disappear" while renaming, I will make a notice of that in Bugzilla. File:Belted_50_cal.jpg

Hello. I'm new to Wikimedia Commons, and I'm confused as to how I should credit a photo.

I'd like to use the "belted 50 cal.jpg" (. But I don't see anything on the page itself that details who and how to credit the photo. I thought I'd read somewhere on Wikimedia that if I click on the image, it will give me photo credit information. When I clicked on the photo that I'm interested in, however, it only enlarged it.

Can you please tell me exactly how I should credit this photo (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Belted_50_cal.jpg), and where I can find this information in the future? I'm guessing it's in the "comment section " under "file history," but I'm unsre if that's correct (or how much of that detail I have to include)

Many thanks.

You should provide the author, source and license. so it would be something like:

Thank you for your quick reply! I was confused as to whether I should credit Wikimedia or Flikr.

From my other readings on the Internet, I gather that I should also have links to the Wikimedia page and the license page, too. Is this correct?

Hello,
Your newbie questions aren't a problem at all, I rather explains things very often than I need to warn people because it goes wrong :)
You are correct that you should add links to the wikimedia page and add the license when you use it on more places on the internet. The license doesn't need to be a link, just normal text will be good also.
