I've reverted you at File:Pop Conference 2014 - Mark Sinker 01.jpg: your version was very low saturation, different from but not particularly better than mine.
Please: you are not supposed to overwrite other active contributor's images against their wishes. You are, of course, welcome to create a new version of the file under a different filename". Please see Commons:Overwriting existing files. - Jmabel ! talk 15:51, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
- Jmabel: Hi there, I missed this message earlier. You were right about this, of course. I was tinkering around and it was rash and inconsiderate to overwrite your photo, regardless of whether my retouch was an improvement (it wasn't). I appreciate that you left this note—I wasn't really aware of that overwriting policy, and you were informative and patient under the circumstances—and I apologize for the trouble. On that note: thank you, sincerely, for all the photos from Pop Conference 2014, which are really valuable to the project. I know my clumsy overwrite was *ahem* shall we say not the best way to express my gratitude, but it's really cool to have a free-license photo of someone like Mark Sinker at all. Cheers Brandt Luke Zorn (talk) 20:26, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. ~riley (talk) 05:25, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
Poster uploads
[edit]Could you please crop out the borders of the film posters you upload. They're not necessary and reduce the amount of the actual poster displayed. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:19, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Beyond My Ken—I get what you're asking, but I'm not going to do that. It's standard practice to include the margins of vintage film posters. The Mummy 1932 film poster.jpg, a Featured Image I did not upload, includes these margins—as do countless other examples of film posters I did not upload. I'm not sure what you mean by "necessary", but the margins are often significant as they typically contain copyright notices or other valuable source information. Even as purely visual information they indicate how yellowed/aged the poster paper itself is, allowing a viewer's eye to adjust and more easily judge the overall appearance and natural color balance.
- Besides, the border between where the margins "end" and the poster artwork "begins" is often extremely difficult to judge or nonexistent—the inner "poster artwork" is not always a clearly distinguished perfect rectangle within the poster sheet as a whole. For example, see The Lady from Shanghai (1947 poster).jpg, Out of the Past (1947 poster - retouched).jpg, The Band Wagon (1953 poster).jpg, Knute Rocknie, All American (1940 poster).jpg, Jezebel (1938 film poster).jpg, etc. In my view, cropping the margins would represent a lot of extra work for a result that is, at worst, a detriment or, at best, a very marginal (no pun intended) improvement. Thanks for uploading File:Where the Buffalo Roam (1980 film poster, Ralph Steadman illustration).jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |
- FlightTime (open channel) 20:27, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
- @FlightTime: No permission from the creator is required because the poster entered the public domain under US copyright law. I appreciate the scrutiny, since public domain status is unusual for a work published in 1980, but I'm confident that it is a public domain work. Per Template:PD-US-1978-89, omission of a valid copyright notice on a work published in the US between 1978 and 1989 (such as a commercially distributed film poster) rendered that work susceptible to forfeiture of its copyright-protected status, which could only be "saved" by registering the work with the US Copyright Office within 5 years. If it wasn't registered, it entered the public domain. The Where the Buffalo Roam poster clearly omitted any valid copyright notice, which can be verified by examining the high-res image itself, or (to ensure that I did not erase or crop out a notice) you can inspect the source scan at Heritage Auctions. The lack of registration by 1986 can be checked by searching the online Copyright Catalog (1978–present). If the image is deleted on Commons it would need to be for a different reason than "lack of permission", as permission is not necessary if the putative copyright holder forfeited the copyright. [edit]Copyright status: File:Cormac McCarthy (Child of God author portrait - high-res).jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Cormac McCarthy (Child of God author portrait - high-res).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Barry Lyndon poster
[edit]Could you look for a copyright-free Barry Lyndon poster to upload on Commons?
I saw how your poster upload for the 1976 A Star Is Born contains an extensive research of the posters copyright notice in the permission section and thought you could look for the Barry Lyndon posters in the HA.com website where i noticed many lacking any copyright notice, and therefore are suitable for upload. --Mayimbú (talk) 03:49, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
