Yours sincerely, 0x0a (talk) 18:20, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi 0x0a. Thanks for your message. I didn't include the exact URL because it was embedded in the webp files metadata. When I verified this, I learned that the file that I uploaded had the ebay.com URL embedded in it, but when I downloaded it from Commons the Commons URL as embedded in the metadata. In the future I can add the step of pulling the ebay.com URL out and included it when I upload the file.
- Is there a best practice for handling postcard scans? I could embed the exact URL, but I don't know how long those are valid on eBay.
- I have seen a number of people use the notation "Permission: Pre-1978, no mark" with the following notation:
- The card has no copyright markings on it as can be seen in the links above.
- United States Copyright Office page 2 "Visually Perceptible Copies The notice for visually perceptible copies should contain all three elements described below. They should appear together or in close proximity on the copies.
- 1 The symbol © (letter C in a circle); the word “Copyright”; or the abbreviation “Copr.”
- 2 The year of first publication. If the work is a derivative work or a compilation incorporating previously published material, the year date of first publication of the derivative work or compilation is sufficient. Examples of derivative works are translations or dramatizations; an example of a compilation is an anthology. The year may be omitted when a pictorial, graphic, or sculptural work, with accompanying textual matter, if any, is reproduced in or on greeting cards, postcards, stationery, jewelry, dolls, toys, or useful articles.
- 3 The name of the copyright owner, an abbreviation by which the name can be recognized, or a generally known alternative designation of owner.1 Example © 2007 Jane Doe.")
- I understand and completely support protecting the rights of copyright holders, but at the same time want to make sure I don't needlessly omit items that could be uploaded.
- If there is a guideline or standard practice on this I would appreciate you pointing me to it. I looked, but it is very likely I could have missed it.
- Best Regards,
- Mark FischerFotos (talk) 18:38, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
- I checked some images, but didn't see any URL embedded in the metadata. Instead, it's necessary to provide the source URL on the page so that the Internet Archive can take a snapshot of the source page. So, please fix them before I answer your second question. 0x0a (talk) 06:57, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- I went through the postcards and added the full URLs to ebay.com. Most of the postcards had postmarks, which made it easy to date them. Some didn't have a postmark but were marked as requiring postage of 1 cent. The price didn't go up to 2 cents until 2 November 1917 (https://postalmuseum.si.edu/us-domestic-postcard-rates) so I marked than as being from the 1910s. A few didn't show the back side, but the vendor indicated the postmark date in the text of the listing. There were a very few where the seller listed a date but did not say how they arrived at it. I presumed that vendors who specialize in postcards know the dates based on the postage price or similar cards. The dates listed matched my understanding of the subject matter.
- It appears that the source URL which is included in the metadata for the files I kept locally gets erased or overwritten when uploading it to the Commons. I have started included the full URL in my uploads from now on. FischerFotos (talk) 20:54, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- I checked all the files, and all look OK. Frankly, it's not recommended to embed eBay links into images as they often become invalid over time.
- Work published in the U.S. between 1929 and 1978 without a copyright notice may be uploaded to Commons with a {{PD-US-no-notice}} tag. Make sure there is no copyright on each side of the postcard and upload them under the same filename. Here is an example. 0x0a (talk) 11:57, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category
[edit]When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Erie L-1. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). - Thanks, Jmabel. I am slowly getting more active on Wikipedia and in the Commons and I have a lot to learn! FischerFotos (talk) 19:25, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
