As the person who recently coded the template for set nominations, I just wanted to check in with you and see whether you found anything about the process more awkward than it should have been. Mind, FPCbot buggers up the promotions still, but that'll be fixed soon, with luck. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 05:13, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

File:Animal cell cycle.svg microtubule actin filaments

In File:Animal cell cycle.svg, under the w:centrosome item you list centrioles and microtubule actin filaments. Is microtubule actin filaments a mistake?Smallman12q (talk) 01:16, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes it is, thanks for noticing! I'm trying to correct it, but the picture is protected from editing(because it's on the main page)!—Kelvinsong (talk) 01:29, 2 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing it. You have some really great bio illustrations=D.Smallman12q (talk)

Ouragan

Hi Kelvinsong.
Congratulations for your very interesting drawings !
There is no way for me to open your files in Inkscape (i don't know why, I'm surely doing something wrong), and therefore, I'm not able to translate them in french.
Do you think you could do that for us ?
Here are the translations of caption:
"Anatomy of a hurricane in the northern hemisphere" = "Anatomie d'un ouragan dans l'hémisphère nord"
"Outflow cirrus shield" = "circulation centrifuge du bouclier de cirrus"
"Outflow" = "flux de sortie"
"Warm rising air" = "Air chaud ascendant"
"Eye wall" = "paroi de l'oeil"
"Eye" = "oeil"
"Storm rotation (counterclockwise)" = "Rotation de la tempête (antihoraire)"
"Cold falling air" = "Air froid descendant"
"Rain bands" = "Rideaux de pluie"
Thanks again for your good work, and thanks in advance for french version !
Have a nice day !--Jebulon (talk) 11:49, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
I have typesetted the translation—
Small question—can the l' go with "dans" in the small box, or should it stick with "hémisphère" in the bigger box?—Kelvinsong (talk) 21:06, 3 January 2013 (UTC)
It is very good as it is, thank you (even for the "œ" of "œil" !) --Jebulon (talk) 22:56, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Spanish Hurricane

Hi! Congratulations for your FP. There's a spelling mistake in the Spanish version of the hurricane image. Instead of "Aire caliente que se aleva", it is "Aire caliente que se eleva", because the verb is "elevarse". And now that this should be fixed, I also propose to write "Sentido antihorario" and not only "Antihorario" (about the rotation of the storm) , because it is much clearer, its sense is much more complete. Thanks! --Kadellar (talk) 23:40, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Great job on the Sun and Moon posters! If you are ever in need of an idea for a new graphic I want to suggest a similar graphic for the ice moon Europa. It could really benefit from some vector magic. :) Bjarki S (talk) 16:37, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

I wonder if you could make one similar one for our planet. That would sort of complete the Solar System trio - Earth Moon Sun. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 12:48, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
  • Sounds doable—but first I'm going finish a biology poster I'm working on, and I have to do a few birthday cards (unrelated to commons), maybe afterwards.—Kelvinsong (talk)

Thanks for the Earth

And yet another brilliant image made by you! Thanks yet again! I was just about to suggest layers of atmosphere, when you made it. But somehow its quite weird to look at. Maybe because of the tilt/ the triangle than a square etc.. Is there anything that can be done about it? And how about layers of the ocean bed or something like that? (like this)

Keep up the good work! Cheers, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 06:49, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

P.S. You might want to get your pics as FP on enWiki too. (I am sure your pictures themselves could easily win you the Wikicup all by yourself, that too without a single articlespace edit ;) )
P.S.2. I often show pictures made by you to those I know saying that "My friend made them." :) (Just showed to my nephew and sister today, and they were amazed. My sister requested me to ask you to make a picture of her, and I said "You arent encyclopediac". That shut her up!)
Cheers,
TheOriginalSoni (talk) 06:49, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Lol! Anyway, the tilt can be fixed—I uploaded a new version(Though the spanish language one refuses to update, as usual), the triangular shape cannot be changed—it would require the entire image to be redrawn. Also, wouldn't En-FP be redundant—I thought Commons FP is higher than Language wiki FP.—Kelvinsong (talk) 14:36, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Now looks better. Its great as always!!! :)
Yes the commons FP is higher than the language FP. But most languages have their own FPs and most of the best pictures are FP on multiple languages (See The Blue Marble). And I am tempted to think most languages consider Commons FP criteria to be selecting only good quality images, regardless of their encyclopediac value. Someone on the inside should know the difference I think. You can always just ask why they have it separate, and if it should be FP on both. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 18:10, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Mitochondrion

Hi Kelvinsong ! Congratulations for your "Work-in-Progress family of svg cell organelle diagrams". I want to make this scheme on French for the FR:WIKI, but I need some fonts... Could you send me by email this fonts ? Frutiger Neue 55, 35 ? Thanks a lot again, et sorry for my English. - Hawk-Eye (talk) (fr:wp)

Thanks! Sending you the fonts is a legal gray-area. But you can download them right from the source. You can use a tool like Chrome inspector(look in the network panel for .woff files). You might need to do some font converting and renaming with a tool like Fontforge. You can also upload a version with editable text (keep the font names, even if they are invalid on your computer), and I can just open it in Inkscape, outline the Frutiger text to preserve it, and overwrite the Commons file.—Kelvinsong (talk) 23:41, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I should have thought about it before :). But, can you just tell me which type of font (Book, Regular...) corresponds to Frutiger Neue "55" and which to "35" for you? - Hawk-Eye (talk) (fr:wp) 07:52, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Oh , sorry, I just see User:Kelvinsong/Frutiger ; Thanks again ! - Hawk-Eye (talk) (fr:wp) 07:56, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi ! Well done. But it seems to have a bug with the title (font too large ?) As you have seen, I have traslated lots of your diagram. Thanks again ! --Hawk-Eye (talk) 22:11, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Merci beaucoup pour les traductions ! The overflowing titles are intentional ;). Also, please add links between the translations, especially if you do not make a derivative work declaration, like at File:Earth poster-fr.svg. It makes finding translations and other versions easier. The solar system cutaways have a template, so you only need to add the link there. :) —Kelvinsong (talk) 22:24, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

Will you be making chemistry graphics too? Orbital hybridization seems to be a topic where many graphics might be needed

Itemic (talk) 04:37, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

I might, but I think these things are better done by people with 3D-to-Vector scripts or equation-to-vector tools to get the required mathematical precision and stuff.—Kelvinsong (talk) 20:23, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

How about an editable periodic table for different things, like electron shells, electronegativity, etc. BTW I can probably help with traditioanl chinese translation. --Itemic (talk) 06:18, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
Well, I don't have much knowledge of stuff like that, but there already exists a nice CSS version you might be interested in—Kelvinsong (talk) 22:45, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
How about completing an astronomy set? A meteor, a comet, All planets of the solar system (distances in scale, and another for sizes in scale), maybe an asteroid belt, any one of the Gas Giants... Looks like your magic touch could come in handy ;) TheOriginalSoni (talk) 14:25, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
Would definitely be interested in doing that! :) You may be interested in File:Vector saturn.svg, which is an SVG of Saturn I created as a librsvg bug gallery (Correct PNG render)—Kelvinsong (talk) 15:21, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, though most of my newer stuff is actually under CC-BY or CC-BY-SA, though they can be considered more or less public domain within the Wikimedia projects—I only ask for links to make it easier to users to find the originals.—Kelvinsong (talk) 22:45, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Well done on these great diagrams Kelvinsong! They are exceptional!

Can you please let me know how I can contact you? I would like to use some of your diagrams in a text book I am compiling. I will of course give full credit where it is due :). Just want to check with you if you are OK with it.

Thanks! Codex7115 (talk) 16:06, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank you! I'm glad that you want to include my images in your book! As long as you give proper attribution (including, but not limited to, a link to the Commons originals), and release the book under a similar free license, you are fine legally. We can discuss less restrictive terms here, or if you want, I can give you my email.—Kelvinsong (talk) 22:02, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Kelvinsong - It is an iBook to be released on iTunes, paid for, so I guess it is for Commercial purposes. Can't say how successful or not it will be. It is my first attempt :-).

Thanks! Codex7115 (talk) 16:06, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

I see a potential problem regarding third-party rights holders—the font used in the diagrams (Frutiger Neue) is a commercial font. To use it in a book you're selling, I strongly suggest licensing the font (which would cost around $600 USD).—Kelvinsong (talk) 13:37, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

AH - OK. Thanks for you help! I think I will rather not use them in that case. But kudos for the fantastic work, you are very talented!

SVG font problem

Dear Kelvinsong, Thanks for your reply in help page. Actually I know about the problems of "object to path" conversion. I want to know, why without "object to path" conversion my first version [1] of illustration was not visible in wikimedia commons? Could you please check this? Thanks in advance.--Freemesm (talk) 01:56, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

You were using flowing text which is supported by Inkscape and only Inkscape. You have to convert it to "plain" text and manually insert linebreaks to get it to work.—Kelvinsong (talk) 02:02, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
If you don't mind could you please tell me the process of converting "flowing text" to "plain" or give me any tutorial link? I've discovered that you are a great Inkscape artist. I'm a mechanical engineering graduate from Bangladesh. I've great interest on drawing, specially digital drawing. I know the basic know how of Inkscape. Can I get some suggestion to improve myself in digital (Inkscape) drawing? you may check my contribution list here to find out my weaknesses. You may suggest me any tutorial or any resource to dig deeper. Thanks in advance.--Freemesm (talk) 15:01, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
Already I got the "flowing text" to "plain" option.--Freemesm (talk) 20:32, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks Kelvinsong. I didn't realized that there were two versions of the file. I went to the editor's version at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chloroplast_(editors_version).svg and I translated the file that I found there. I will add the new version.

By the way, I also speak Spanish as first language, so if you want I can help you with the Spanish versions. --Irene Pelegrí (talk) 14:06, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for the translations! (And remembering to add the picture links on the templates!) And, yes, your help would be appreciated on the spanish diagrams, especially the ones with paragraph texts like FIle: A la estela.svg. By the way, if you haven't noticed, there's an editable text layer on many of the newer diagrams, like the second chloroplast one. (The older ones like the mitochondrion don't) You should see a rectangle off the page, select it and ungroup it, and turn the opacity of all contained objects in it back to 100%. You may also find it helpful to download the font used, see User:Kelvinsong/Frutiger for instructions.—Kelvinsong (talk) 15:12, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

Interview for Wikimedia blog

Hi Kelvinsong,

My name is Donna Peterson, and I'm a communications volunteer with the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. We have a feature on the Wikimedia blog [2] to profile the photographers behind the beautiful photos that become Picture of the Day (POTD) on Wikimedia Commons. You can see some of our past POTD posts here: https://blog.wikimedia.org/c/communications/picture-of-the-day/

Given that your photo Plant Cell Types is scheduled for July 27th, we'd love to do a short interview with you by email to discuss your photography and your POTD. Please let me know if you would be interested! You can email me dpeterson@wikimedia.org or respond on my talk page.

Thanks, DPeterson (WMF) (talk) 14:52, 17 July 2013 (UTC)
