Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:26, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi there
Do you mind taking a look at this image you uploaded? Did you mean calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate at the extreme left? --Rifleman 82 (talk) 03:05, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
- Good point. I'll change that. Thanks.--RicHard-59 (talk) 17:47, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
- Now it is fixed. Any knowledge of "calcium morphenate" structure how it looks like?--RicHard-59 (talk) 18:06, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for getting back. Don't know about calcium morphenate, sorry. I don't check Commons often. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 06:05, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
Hi, I have added information to the talk page of your image since ammonium chloride does not create morphine hydrochloride. Adding ammonium chloride until the pH reaches 8-9 causes the the morphine to precipitate out of solution, which is in freebase (i.e. pure, non soluble) form. The remaining opium solution is filtered off and the relatively pure morphine is dissolved in hydrochloric acid solution to produce the water soluble salt morphine hydrochloride.
By the way, all that needs correcting is to simply remove the word 'hydrochloride' (HCl) from after the word morphine, since this step (adding hcl acid to create morphine hcl) is not essential in production. After ammonium chloride is added the morphine (pure freebase form, not hydrochloride) precipitates and can be added directly to acetic anhydride to form diacetylmorphine.

- Fixed. I added also possible img of calcium morphenate. Pls report if problem.--RicHard-59 (talk) 13:11, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
Good job on correcting things! Now, I don't want to be too fussy but because I really like your image, finding the way it simplifies the procedure for refining opium so well really neat - I believe there are a few more improvements that could help to make the image even more accurate. I will point these suggestions out below;
- 1. Calcium hydroxide is an ionic compound, whereas your structure appears to show covalent bonds (there shouldn't be any lines between the calcium & OH molecules). It should look more like your structure of ammonium chloride, except of course the calcium ion should have a 2+ charge (perhaps in a blue circle to resemble the charge on ammonium). The two hydroxide molecules (OH) should each have a single - charge. This link provides a good example of how the OH's could appear - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hydroxide_lone_pairs-2D.svg, but you should probably leave out the lone pairs (the six black dots around the O) and could put the charge in a blue circle as with ammoinum chloride. Optionally, both the calcium and the two hydroxide ions can be drawn within square brackets. Also, the molecular structure of CaOH2 should have the '2' following OH written outside the brackets - as Ca(OH)2 rather than Ca(OH2) as it is currently written!
- 2. I am not really sure what the structure of calcium morphinate should look like as there don't appear to be any examples online. However, one thing I would suggest, is that the 3-OH group (the top one) is more likely to dissociate than the 6-OH (the bottom one) because it is a phenol which is quite a bit more acidic than a standard hydroxyl group (which the bottom one is). Therefore perhaps you could consider giving the top group the negative charge instead - or even showing both groups dissociated and negatively charged, therefore having a single morphine ion bonding to a single calcium (instead of 1 Ca ion to 2 Morphinate ions as is shown currently). It might also be neater to leave out the square brackets surrounding the morphenate ion, similar to what you have done with ammonium chloride (would probably be neater!).
- 3. Finally, to make it more obvious that morphine is in freebase form rather than a salt you could consider writing the word freebase in brackets following the word morphine, perhaps in italics (this is obviously not essential, and it may actually be neater and look more condensed without including it!).
D Dinneen 10 November 2011.
- Thanks for corrections. Uploaded new img with changes.--RicHard-59 (talk) 22:46, 10 November 2011 (UTC)

- The name "calcium morphenate" generally does not refer to a single chemical compound, but rather to the complex mixture obtained by treating opium (itself a complex mixture) with calcium carbonate. I don't think it is useful to try to depict it as a chemical structure diagram. Ed (Edgar181) 16:55, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

- That side-chain still has weird geometry. Why is the ring->chain bond not straight to the right, the bonds at the carbonyl not 120°, and the bond-junction along the way to the benzene ring not 120°? DMacks (talk) 00:32, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi RicHard-59. Please do not overwrite images created by other users, unless they contain errors or the quality (e.g. resolution) is low and you improve it without changing the layout. Further more, structural formulae are generally preferably drawn in black only. --Leyo 16:39, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Chatterjee-dia-sm.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Chatterjee-dia-sm.png ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Copyright status: File:Stanley postcard.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Stanley postcard.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

PEGI icons
[edit]Hello. I’ve uploaded new versions for some of the annotated PEGI labels (File:Online n.svg, File:PEGI bad language.svg, File:PEGI Violence 2.svg) and also added the missing ones (File:PEGI Fear annotated.svg File:PEGI Drugs annotated.svg File:PEGI Gambling annotated.svg File:PEGI Discrimination annotated.svg).
If you can, please have a look and see whether everything’s fine with the new SVG files and that they’re not being rendered incorrectly on your devices and platforms. There was a problem with background pattern not showing, but I guess that was because I clipped it to fit the box. In current files the pattern slightly exceeds the dimension of the box, but since viewers (e.g. browsers) render only anything inside the declared dimensions, it seems to not be a problem.
If you have time, could you please also answer this two questions?
- How did you stretch the Dejavu font? — The question is mainly about vertical stretching. I tried all text-formatting options that Inkscape provides, but couldn’t match a writing in Dejavu Sans to that of your version. You can see a comparison here. The upper one is my version, with all text settings identical to the lower (your) version that was found in the old file, but still there are significant differences.
- How did you make the background PEGI-word pattern match the original so precisely? — I used these two “scans” to match the digital copies with the originals as much as I could, and your background pattern for the repeating “PEGI” was very closely matching with those in original images in both cases.
Also, thanks for your uploads. DaemonDice (talk) 12:16, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- I will take a look. Thnks.
- Sometimes I transfer text to path using "Object to Path" (shift-ctrl-C) and then text can be modified any way one wants. edit: If there is no accurate font, i take some simple font, transfer its edges to paths and use the original font as guide to make my font to match.
- I rotated image so that text is horizontal, made texts fit and rotated back.--RicHard-59 (talk) 13:59, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Crohn's Disease vs Colitis ulcerosa.svg. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Your SVG files
[edit]Thank you for uploading files. Unfortunately, you seem to have still the habit to tag your files with Inkscape, which stores them in a maintenance category; the work of other users is then needed to tag them correctly. Depending your files of today, A-234 Mirzayanov.svg and A-234 Hoenig.svg, I shall do it now; but it would be preferred when you complete your work by yourself. Numerous of your files from the past are still tagged in a wrong way: the Inkscape is outdated since many years! Regards, -- sarang♥사랑 17:53, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
- thank you for your help. I added Igen-line to my user page for future works. Can you check File:Golden Gate Bridge jumpers by year.svg for me. i visited https://validator.w3.org/ and it found 3 errors on file and I added igen to page. Of course there is Template:Created with Inkscape I can use, yes?--RicHard-59 (talk) 09:28, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- It is a bit troublesome that we can use at least 3 different validators, they state sometimes different number of W3C-errors. But with all of them I found only 1 error at Golden Gate Bridge. It does not matter so much whether you declare 0, 1 or more errors - when it is just depending on a validator.
- The template Inkscape is a shortcut of Created with Inkscape, there is no difference; Inkscape does the same. The needed parameters of either one of these three can be added manually (which may be rather complicated), or by invoking the script.
- The best thing to tag an SVG file is to use the script; it is still under development but presents suggestions which can be used in many times without modification. Its installation is easy, just insert into your User:RicHard-59/commons.js the lines
// Sarang/simpleSVGcheck.js if (mw.config.get('wgNamespaceNumber') === 6 && /SVG/i.test(mw.config.get('wgTitle').slice(-3))) mw.loader.load('//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Sarang/simpleSVGcheck.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
- When you see the scripts generated output, often a lot of very cryptic parameters, you won't need to study them (except if you really want to understand) in detail, just use them. Also you need not to learn by heart Commons talk:SVG marker templates or Commons:SVG marker templates! When it makes troubles or you need help, contact me. -- sarang♥사랑 10:12, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
- Does text as text cause error about " SVG images with embedded raster graphics"? I've noticed text as path does scale correctly but as textfield not. Image File:Golden Gate Bridge jumpers by year.svg has hidden text visible only in svg-editor: sources of the numbers. If transform all texts to paths image size goes up from 400kb to 1400 kb.--RicHard-59 (talk) 12:03, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry, I did not see it ealier - you gave me no ping. You are talking about two different things
- "SVG images with embedded raster graphics" are SVG containing not only SVG code but also embedded raster images.
- Text that should be displayed by an SVG may be
- embedded text, with the SVG <text> instruction,
- "pathed" text, with the SVG <path> instruction. SVG can contain both - but that is bad style.
- The Golden-Gate file has no hidden or invisible text, but SVG <id> of the year to enable an overview for you, the editor.
- Invisible text is in all your files at Category:Finnish age limit symbols, such invisible watermarking is undesired/forbidden for files in Wikimedia !
- If you have further questions, pleae ping me -- sarang♥사랑 08:49, 14 November 2022 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
[edit]Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
