License after transfer
[edit]You transferred http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Einar_palsson.jpg to Commons http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Einar_palsson.jpg.
However, the EN.WP license was CC-SA 3.0 while the license on Commons is PD.
Is this a mistake or am I missing something?--Sphilbrick (talk) 15:00, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
- Well, you are missing one thing. The image was transfered from IS.WP. Check the source in the information template if you don´t belive me. The IS.WP picture is labeled with an Óhöfundaréttarvarið (in english: Uncopyrighted) template, witch is the same as PD.--Snaevar (talk) 15:43, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
- I added a question to the uploader at en.wp here--Sphilbrick (talk) 16:17, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I have adjusted the histogram. --JovianEye (talk) 06:31, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
- Much better thank you. Unfortunatly, the voting period has passed. Because of FP rules I can´t change my vote because it would not be counted. None the less, you are missing one support to get FP status, and if you feel that you can obtain that by re-nominating the picture, feel free to do so.--Snaevar (talk) 00:51, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Licensing question of File:F1_safety_car.svg
[edit]Hello Snaevar, thank you for uploading files at wikimedia commons. Please have a look at the license of File:F1_safety_car.svg. Maybe you have not chosen the correct one, or maybe I am wrong. If you have questions or you need help, don't hesitate to ask me. Thank you. RE RILLKE Questions? 21:52, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
- If you are talking about adding a Pd-textlogo, that I added after that you noticed the image, then that has been fixed. But, I can´t figure out how you managed to notice it before I did.--Snaevar (talk) 14:25, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, PD-Text was meant, thank you. I hope this message did not cause any inconvinience. Yours sincerly --RE RILLKE Questions? 17:36, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
Critically evaluate Flickr licenses
|
File:Foxy brown-BET.jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid.
Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters. See Commons:Questionable Flickr images for a list of known bad Flickr users.
|
See COM:QFI, chicagofabulousblog is listed there because they have a whole lot of copyvio images in their photostream on flickr. In this case the image is not from chicagofabulousblog and free to use under CC as long as chicagofabulousblog is credited, the copyright is with WireImage, see EXIF. --Martin H. (talk) 02:37, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
- Ah, that explains why the user is blacklisted at the Flinfo tool. But how about this image flickr.com/photos/59452120@N06/5439715653. I see that the artist in the EXIF is Jhonny Nuez, but uploaded at a flickr account named Brooklyn´s Don Diva. I assume that would be a copy-vio also, right?--Snaevar (talk) 14:25, 20 March 2011 (UTC)
- Yes. The photostream is not that big, so a quick overview shows that this is a collection of images from random sources. That account is a flickr laundering (COM:FLICKRW) account of one of our users, User:Marvinrashad, who created it to upload some photos to make them freely licensed. The license must come from the copyright holder of course, not from Marvinrashad. --Martin H. (talk) 15:01, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Many thanks for the heads up. It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine, not using templates for voting (always thought that if anyone wanted to change the content of the template, my vote could be changed in a second ;). But I'll make sure to use the appropriate templates next time. Best. notafish }<';> 18:22, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
Actinomycetales/Actinobacteria
[edit]Your bot dropped me a note on my Tagalog Wikipedia talk page that the articles tl:Actinomycetales (en:Actinomycetales) and tl:Actinobacteria (en:Actinobacteria) are duplicates. EN and TL have separate articles for this different topics. The problem is articles of EN are linking to the same RU (ru:Актиномицеты) article. The interwiki for the RU article must be resolved first so that the bots will work without problems. --Bluemask (talk) 00:07, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:25, 5 November 2011 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Appropriately Licensed
[edit]You participated at the earlier discussion on licence choice for Featured Pictures. A number of users felt that such restrictions should be made at policy level. Please comment at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed. This is a proposal to amend this licence policy to disallow future uploads where the sole licence is inappropriate for the media (e.g., GFDL for images). In earlier discussions there were a number of comments that, while reasonable opinions, did not align with Wikimedia's mission for free content. Please read the FAQ before commenting. Thanks -- Colin (talk) 23:02, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Module:File
[edit]What script error was fixed by that change? -- Rillke(q?) 15:41, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
- Before that change, module File gave an script error: "Lua error in Module:File, line 6: attempt to call global 'File' (a nil value).
- Backtrace:
- Module:File:6 in function "getFile"."
- I fixed that error by making the local variable File, in line 12, global.
- To see that error for yourself, you can open up the past version of Module:File and copy the page name "File:Lubinus Duchy of Pomerania Map 1618 monocromatic.jpg" and paste it into a field marked "page title", under the heading "Preview page with this template".--Snaevar (talk) 16:14, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
- All right. Thanks for quickly resolving this issue and for the helpful reply (never used that functionality). I messed this up while moving the helper functions to the top of the module. -- Rillke(q?) 18:10, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
