Abstract: BACKGROUND: Braille and text to speech systems have tremendously improved the lives of the visually impaired across the world. However, a large population of the visually impaired people in India is still deprived of getting the benefits of such advancements. This was primarily due to the difference in the technology required for Indian languages compared to those corresponding to other popular languages of the world. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we present a design and evaluation of a unified open-source framework that will enable a visually impaired to access and produce information contents in Indian vernaculars with the help of computers.…METHODS: The proposed framework has been designed by keeping constant interaction with the visually impaired people and by keeping in mind their different requirements. The framework is integrated with five different engines namely, a forward and reverse Indian language text to Braille transliteration engine, a Nemmeth editor to convert mathematical expressions into Braille, a tactile converter to convert graphical images into Braille, a voice mailing system to compose and receive voice based emails for the Blinds, and an Indian language file reader with integrated Hindi and Bangla speech synthesis engines. RESULTS: The framework has been deployed and exhaustively evaluated by people from different Blind schools and organizations for Blinds all over India. The transliteration engines are particularly useful for creating a large volume of Indian language Braille books.

Abstract: In this paper we present the development of an English-Bangla transliteration parallel corpus and used it to develop and evaluate some of the popular computational models to transliterate Bangla texts written in Romanized English, back to its original script. Accordingly, we have developed different techniques to generate an English-Bangla parallel transliterated lexicon of around 100,000 words. The proposed lexicon of English-Bangla transliterated word pairs along with some of the language specific orthographic as well as phonetic information rules are used to develop two different computational models namely, the joint source channel model and the phrase based SMT model, to automatically…identify, extract and learn the transliteration unit (TU) pairs from both the source and target language words. Both the models are used to predict the top 5 best possible outcome of the given input text. Both the models have been evaluated with a set of 20000 Romanized transliterated Bangla test words. Our initial evaluation results clearly shows that performance of the SMT model slightly surpasses the performance joint source channel model.

Abstract: This paper deals with a new framework for archiving and annotating Rabindra Sangeet (‘Rabindra Sangeet’, n.d) (known as Tagore songs in English) written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore. This framework has a layered structure with each layer having a specific defined functionality. XML (’XML Tutorial’, n.d) is used to construct the framework to store different synchronized layers of information in a simple manner. These layers contain notational, audio/MIDI (‘Learn About MIDI’, n.d), catalogue information including structure of musicsheet. MusicXML (‘MusicXML Definition’, n.d) and IEEE P1599 (‘IEEE Standard P1599-2008’, 12 June 2008) standard are two prominent structured formats for defining western…music. The inadequate nature of these two formats for representing Indian music system (including Rabindra Sangeet) makes this new framework relevant. This paper gives a brief description of the new framework and a simple application for archiving Tagore songs in MIDI and notational format. There are two ultimate purposes of this work. The first one is to generate the MIDI files of all the songs with various instruments. The second one is to store the characters of the musicsheet in the XML file so that data can be retrieved and presented in a desktop and web environment.

Abstract: Though speaking skills in the mother tongue develop naturally, developing reading skills requires training. Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability that can affect the reading ability in any language. Although many literature is available to address these challenges, the need to teach sentence reading was neglected. This paper addresses problems faced while reading sentences. As computer-based multi-sensory teaching is considered as an effective way to teach children with dyslexia (CwD), the proposed system uses multisensory teaching methods to teach sentence reading in Hindi and Bangla languages. It shows sentences as word packages to teach word sequence and help with comprehension.…The platform records the response time of the user to generate a performance report to monitor her performance. For evaluating the system, an expert survey was conducted with 26 special educators in two phases, pre-test and post-test. The questionnaires were prepared following previous literature under the expert’s supervision. The pre-test data helped in understanding the educators’ experience and opinions about assistive technology and the post-test data were used to evaluate the system. In the evaluation, all educators agreed that the system will be very useful for their students and it will give a generalised solution for all the challenges their students face.
