Abstract: The paper provides a summary of the history of the IAOS from 1985 to 2017. Using archive material and recollections of former Presidents it charts the beginnings of the Association in the mid-1980s, reminding us of its original purpose. The paper discusses the successes of setting up the Journal, the Young Statisticians Prize and the web site. It covers the Malaguerra report which reviewed its purpose in 1999 as well as the ‘revitalising’ discussions of 2003. The paper gives useful tables of IAOS conferences, presidents and membership figures, and discusses some of the challenges it has faced, some of which…remain relevant today.

Abstract: This paper looks at some of the ethical challenges that Big Data and data linking present for official statistics, reviews some of the international initiatives in train, focusing on recent developments in the UK. It emphasises the importance of confidentiality in maintaining trust in official statistics, arguing that, although the ethical issues are everywhere acknowledged as important, the debate on this is still at an early stage, and needs to be pursued.
Abstract: What qualities are needed by statisticians to achieve top leadership positions in academia, business, industry and government? Five leaders from statistical societies, national and international statistical offices, and academia share their experiences. They respond to five specific questions. Firstly, is leadership just needed by top management or do all statisticians have a role? If so, what is it? Secondly, do statisticians naturally make good leaders? What new skills do they need to acquire? What skills advantages do they have? Thirdly, the panel consider the question: did you work for people who were not good leaders? How did they fall short?…What good role models did panellists have? And then, is it harder for women, and for other under-represented groups? And finally they were asked: what message do you have for young statisticians aspiring to leadership roles?
