How our Bliss Filters work
Viking, the river cruise line that practically invented the phenomenally popular river cruises market, expanded its horizons in 2015 with the launch of its first ocean vessel, the 930-passenger Viking Star. Several nearly identical sister ships followed and immediately won the hearts of cruisers everywhere who love the uncrowded midsize vessels and the wide range of amenities that come with each fare at no extra cost.
As with Viking's river ships, the focus is largely on guests' experiences at the destination ports rather than the time on the ship. During the day, guests typically spend more waking hours in port than aboard the ship. You'll also find occasional overnight stays and port visits where the ship doesn't pull out until nearly midnight.
The ocean ships are largely all-inclusive in their pricing structure — atypical in ocean cruising. For instance, specialty restaurants are available at no extra charge, and beer and wine are available at no extra charge for lunch and dinner. There's at least one complimentary shore excursion at every port, and there's no charge for entry to the LivNordic Spa.
The Viking ships also offer a lot of enrichment programs on board. Theaters provide space for performances from local dance troupes as well as lectures from scholars and experts, and on-board cooking classes are available for passengers who want to learn about local dishes.
Viking ocean cruises are not for children. Passengers must be at least 18 years of age and up on embarkation day.
Viking is the most popular and well-known river cruise line in the world, with a fleet of more than 50 ships that ply the storied rivers of Europe and beyond.
Viking has moved into expedition cruises, too. The sleek Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris both debuted in 2022, bringing a new level of comfort to sailings to the polar regions and elsewhere.
