A 29-year-old man from Oshawa is facing multiple charges after allegedly fleeing the scene of an accident, then trying to steal a police cruiser.
According to Durham Regional Police, the incident took place on Monday afternoon when the vehicle the man was driving was allegedly involved in a two-vehicle crash before he attempted to flee on foot.
When officers spotted the suspect fleeing the scene, a pursuit ensued. The suspect then unsuccessfully attempted to steal a civilian’s vehicle but failed to get access, police say.
The suspect was ultimately arrested after attempting to make off with the police cruiser.

One officer suffered a minor injury to her hand and the other driver suffered minor injuries due to the collision.
Police say Nicholas Hellam, 29, of Pine Avenue in Oshawa is facing a total of 10 charges including failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm, theft of motor vehicle, possession of controlled substance (marijuana), and impaired operation of a vehicle.
