In 2003 the nearby town of Chuquicamata, once the largest open-pit copper mine in the world, was dismantled citing environmental reasons and encroachment from the mine's expansion. El campamento de Chuquicamata, que era el segundo núcleo urbano de la comuna, fue oficialmente cerrado el 1 de septiembre de 2007, después del traslado de toda su población a conjuntos habitacionales construidos en la capital provincial. Integra junto con las comunas de Tocopilla, María Elena, Ollagüe y San Pedro de Atacama, el Distrito Electoral N° 3 y pertenece a la 2ª Circunscripción Senatorial (Antofagasta). Durante varios años la ciudad ha luchado para transformarse en la capital de una nueva región llamada región de El Loa, compuesta por la provincia de El Loa y la provincia de Tocopilla, concretando así la independencia político-administrativa de Antofagasta.
