- Henry Thomas "Harry" Blackstaffe (Islington, Londres, 28 de juliol de 1868 – , Londres, 22 d'agost de 1951) va ser un remer anglès que va competir a cavall del segle xix i el segle xx. Blackstaffe va formar part del Vesta Rowing Club de , però també fou corredor de cros i representà el South London Harriers al Campionat Nacional. Com a remer va aconseguir nou victòries a la London Cup de la Metropolitan Regatta, la primera d'elles el 1897. El 1906 va guanyar la Diamond Sculls de la en superar a William Darell. El 1908 va guanyar la Wingfield Sculls i la darrera London Cup, però el seu gran èxit va ser guanyar la medalla d'or en la prova de scull individual dels Jocs Olímpics de Londres. Després d'aquesta victòria, Blackstaffe es va retirar i fou reconegut com a Freeman de la ciutat de Londres. Més tard seria vicepresident de l'Amateur Rowing Association. Neunmal gewann er den London Cup. 1897 siegte er erstmals bei den Wingfield Sculls auf der Themse, diesen Sieg konnte er viermal wiederholen: 1901, 1905, 1906 und 1908. 1906 gewann Blackstaffe die Diamond Sculls, das Einerrennen der Henley Royal Regatta, wobei es für den gelernten Metzger Blackstaffe sehr schwer gewesen war, überhaupt die Zulassung für die Henley Regatta zu erhalten, verdiente er doch sein Geld mit seiner Hände Arbeit, was dem Amateurgedanken von Henley widersprach. Blackstaffe, der für den antrat, konnte sich bei den Olympischen Spielen 1908 für das in Henley ausgetragene Finale qualifizieren, indem er den Kanadier und den Deutschen Bernhard von Gaza besiegte. Im Finale traf Blackstaffe drei Tage nach seinem 40. Geburtstag auf seinen 20 Jahre jüngeren Landsmann , den Blackstaffe erst kurz vor der Ziellinie distanzieren konnte. Mit seinem Sieg wurde Blackstaffe zum ältesten Einer-Olympiasieger in der olympischen Geschichte. - Henry Thomas "Harry" Blackstaffe (28 July 1868 – 22 August 1951) was a British rower who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Blackstaffe was born in Islington, London, and became a butcher. He was a long-standing member of Vesta Rowing Club in Putney and also a cross-country runner who represented in the National Championships. As a single sculler he won nine victories in the London Cup at the Metropolitan Regatta. He first won the Wingfield Sculls in 1897 but in 1898, 1899 and 1900 was beaten by Benjamin Hunting Howell. He won again in 1901 defeating Saint-George Ashe and Arthur Cloutte. He lost to Cloutte in 1902 and to Ashe in 1904, but beat them both in 1905 and 1906. At first he had difficulty in having his entry accepted for Henley Royal Regatta but competed in the Diamond Challenge Sculls in 1905 when he lost to Frederick Septimus Kelly. In 1906 he won the Diamond Sculls beating Captain Darell. In 1908 he won the Wingfield Sculls again and his ninth London Cup, but his major success was to win the gold medal in the single sculls, rowing at the 1908 Summer Olympics. He was aged forty and his opponent in the final Alexander McCulloch was exactly half his age and had won Diamonds that year. The final was considered the finest race of the Olympic Regatta and was virtually level until the last 50 yards when Blackstaffe held on to a light advantage to become the oldest sculling champion in Olympic history. After this victory, Blackstaffe retired and was made a Freeman of the City of London. He was later senior life vice-president of the Amateur Rowing Association. He died at West Wickham, aged 83. (en)
