Se estableció en el panorama musical de los años 1970 como una de las estrellas del soul, famosa mundialmente por su prodigiosa voz y sus registros vocales. Su carrera musical inició en 1961 cuando entró a formar parte de The Gems, produciendo varios éxitos locales. En su adolescencia y gracias a su afiliación con Chess Records cantó como corista para Etta James, Chuck Berry, Fontella Bass, entre otros. En 1967 el grupo se disuelve,y en 1968, Minnie se une al grupo de soul psicodélico Rotary Connection convirtiéndose en su voz principal y grabando 5 álbumes de estudio. A la vez emprendió su carrera como solista y en ayuda del arreglista Charles Stepney publicó su primer álbum, Come To My Garden en 1971, el que,a pesar de tener gran recepción por parte de la crítica, fue un fracaso comercial. Varios años después se traslada a Los Ángeles para grabar su segundo álbum de estudio, bajo el sello Epic Records y en producción de Stevie Wonder en 1974 es lanzado Perfect Angel que resultó ser un éxito comercial, especialmente por la balada soul "Lovin You" que encabezó las listas en varios países, recibiendo disco de oro y llegando al puesto #1 en el Billboard Hot 100 el 5 de abril de 1976, siendo la primera canción de una mujer en la historia que no usó instrumentos de percusión y encabezó esa lista. Del mismo modo es considerada como la primera canción que internacionalizó el registro de silbido en la música. También destacó la canción "Every Time He Comes Around", con Deniece Williams. En 1975 publica su tercer álbum de estudio, Adventure in paradise, con una extravagante portada con un león a su lado, gozó de menos éxito que su antecesor aunque gozó de buenas críticas, contiene el hit de R&B "Inside my love". Para enero de 1976, Riperton fue diagnosticada con cáncer de mama y le practicaron una mastectomía, reconociéndolo públicamente en una entrevista; su diagnóstico de vida era de apenas unos meses. Luego de someterse a una cirugía comenzó a participar y organizar festivales benéficos y en 1977 se convirtió en portavoz de la Sociedad Estadounidense del Cáncer. Un año después, el presidente Jimmy Carter le otorgó el premio Coraje de la Sociedad Americana contra el Cáncer. En 1977 publica su cuarto álbum de estudio, Stay in Love, destacándose su colaboración con Stevie Wonder, y en 1978 Riperton firma un contrato con Capitol Records y publica su último álbum de estudio denominado Minnie, que contó con el hit de soul y R&B "Back Down Memory Lane". En 1979 muere a la corta edad de 31 años, a causa de cáncer de mama con metástasis. Un álbum tributo fue publicado en 1980 con destacadas colaboraciones póstumas con Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Roberta Flack y Peabo Bryson. She is also widely known for her use of the whistle register and has been referred to by the media as the "Queen of the Whistle Register." Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side. As a child, she studied music, drama and dance at Chicago's Abraham Lincoln Center. In her teen years, she sang lead vocals for the Chicago-based girl group the Gems. Her early affiliation with the Chicago-based Chess Records afforded her the opportunity to sing backing vocals for various established artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Ramsey Lewis, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. While at Chess, Riperton also sang lead for the experimental rock/soul group Rotary Connection, from 1967 to 1971. On April 5, 1975, Riperton reached the apex of her career with her No. 1 single "Lovin' You". The single was the last release from her 1974 gold album titled Perfect Angel. In January 1976, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer, and in April, she underwent a radical mastectomy. By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she continued recording and touring. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with a breast cancer diagnosis, but she did not disclose that she was terminally ill. In 1977, she became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society's Courage Award, which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. Riperton died of breast cancer on July 12, 1979, at the age of 31. (en)
