Harald Kunstmann
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Harald Kunstmann (*1968) is a German climate researcher and hydrologist. He holds the Chair of Regional Climate and Hydrology at the University of Augsburg[1], is Director of the Center for Climate Resilience at the University of Augsburg[2], and Deputy Director of the IMK-IFU at KIT in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.[3] His research focuses on the effects of regional climate change on terrestrial hydrology, dynamic and statistical downscaling of meteorological fields, fully coupled and cross-compartment regional atmospheric and hydrological modeling, and the modeling and observation of water and energy fluxes. He also conducts research on the application of commercial microwave links (CMLs) for precipitation determination, geostatistical merging of hydrometeorological variables and seasonal forecasts.
Career Path
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Kunstmann studied physics in Marburg, Virginia (USA) and Heidelberg and received his doctorate in environmental sciences from ETH Zurich in 1998. From 1996-1998 he worked as a visiting scientist at the Institute for Groundwater Studies, Bloemfontein, University of the Free State (UFS), South Africa. In 1999, he joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Atmospheric Environmental Research in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (now KIT-Campus Alpin) as a postdoc and established the Regional Climate and Hydrology research group, which he still heads today. In 2004, he also became head of the Regional Climate Systems department. Since 2009, he has been a W3 professor at the Chair of Regional Climate and Hydrology at the University of Augsburg, a joint appointment with KIT. In 2015 he became deputy director of the KIT Alpine Campus, and in 2021 founding director of the Center for Climate Resilience at the University of Augsburg.[1][3]
