Inspiration
Climate Change; it's on everyone's mind. We always feel powerless when it comes to the bigger picture, but the little things like the choices we make when we shop do a lot more than you can imagine. Reduce your carbon emission by making smart choices and compete to become the most carbon saving caterpillar
What it does
We wanted to develop an application in which you can enter a product/shopping list from a supermarket and find out the amount of carbon dioxide released in the production of the food from start to finish. However, we wanted to go a step further. Why not challenge your friends to get the most carbon saved on the leaderboard, or become the greatest achievement hunter and show off with your new badges
How we built it
We used Flask as the backend framework and Jinja as the HTML template builder. On the front end, we used the bootstrap library alongside our incredible CSS and JS skills.
Challenges we ran into
Being primarily mobile developers, we wanted to foray into the web development space, and did we run into many hurdles. Our problems with CSS would waste hours whilst our futile attempts with numerous APIs didn't help our endeavors. In the end, we produced a product that we were all happy with
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Finishing to a standard we were happy with honestly
What's next for Foodcount
Foodcount could move to mobile. We could integrate a barcode scanner to make it even easier for the user to enter the products into their shopping list. Adding long-term trackers such as a month-long or year-long leaderboard would make it more competitive between users. We could also use more APIs for further food substitutions or an API for getting real-time CO2 data for a wider range of foods. Flesh out the friend's system and create more use for badges. There is plenty to do and this project doesn't stop here!
