Carcass

From DoomWiki.org

A carcass firing an arc of energy.

The carcass is a new cyborg monster introduced in Doom Eternal. It appears to be the upper torso of a zombified human fused with a robotic chassis with three insectile-like legs and a blaster fused into its right arm.

Tactical analysis[edit]

The carcass can fire ring-shaped lasers from the concave dish on its waist, create shockwaves along the ground with its arm blaster or create a wall-like force field to protect itself or other monsters at cost of mobility, which it can deploy a long way away from itself. The force field is heavily resistant to explosives, but like that of the shield soldiers, it is easily destroyed by the plasma rifle or a blood punch. The carcass appears to summon its energy shield most often in front of demons in the stagger state, to prevent the Doom Slayer from being able to easily glory kill them, or when the player is equipped with the rocket launcher or sticky bombs. In close quarters, the carcass uses a spinning strike that hits twice in a row.

Despite its defensive and offensive capabilities, the carcass is relatively fragile, with 1200 HP (240 staggered) and can be brought down without much difficulty by sustained fire. The shield that the carcass summons has half as much health as that of the shield soldier, with 600 HP.

When fighting a carcass, your main goal is to get around its shields and hit it hard with heavy ordinance, because carcasses can become very annoying if left alone for long periods of time. If it summons its shield near itself, use the plasma rifle to detonate it, but otherwise a couple of ballista shots and/or super shotgun blasts should do the trick.

Lore[edit]

The carcass is a hideous product of UAC Cultist experiments, intended to extend the use of soldiers that were too badly injured to fight. Their cybernetics emulate living impulses within the decayed organic body of the host, suspending it in a state that can be called neither living nor dead; the only way to ensure that a carcass is truly destroyed is by completely separating its body from its cybernetic implants.

Glory kills[edit]

  • The Slayer stabs the fuel tank on the carcass' back, causing it to spin and eventually explode.
  • The Slayer damages the carcass' dish, causing it to explode.
  • The Slayer stabs the carcass' head with its own cybernetics.
  • The Slayer shoots the carcass' head off with its blaster.
  • The Slayer cuts the carcass' neck and, when it turns around, kicks its organic body from the cybernetic chassis.
  • The Slayer sweeps the carcass legs out from under it and slices its head off.
  • The Slayer stomps on one of the carcass legs and kicks it in the chest hard enough to send its upper torso flying off.
  • The Slayer punches the carcass in the jaw and then headbutts it.
  • The Slayer sweeps the carcass' legs out from under it, and as it tries to crawl away, stomps its head flat.
  • The Slayer breaks the carcass' legs with a stomp and snaps its neck.
  • The Slayer lands on the carcass' chest, and as it screams in fear, punches its head to pieces.
  • The Slayer lands on the carcass' back and plunges the Doomblade into its skull.

Pre-release[edit]

  • The carcass was first observed in footage released in March 2019 for the Google Stadia reveal.[1]
  • In the QuakeCon 2019 live showcase, the carcass's plasma shield can be seen to be constantly red, unlike in the final release of Doom Eternal where the shield gradually reddens as it is damaged by the plasma rifle or another energy weapon.[2]

Trivia[edit]

  • The force field created by the monster is similar to the shield wall from Doom (2016)'s multiplayer mode.
  • By looking at the Carcass up close, you can see it has a stamp on its left breast that reads "UB-M 22".
  • You can instantly kill a carcass by shooting the circle on the tank on its back.
