The Guest: Episode 7

In their attempt to discover where Park Il-do disappeared to twenty years ago, the trio also try to solve what happened to the missing girl. But can cruel acts of violence be attributed solely to demonic possession, or are some people just plain evil? It’s not a new question for our trio, but it’s one they’ll need to answer soon, hopefully before they destroy their burgeoning partnership — and friendship.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

Twenty years ago, in the forest late at night, someone digs a grave and buries Hyun-joo’s body. In 2018, Kil-young studies a photo of the dead teenager before going into the local police station. She only avoids the wrath of her boss, who’s furious that he can’t find her, thanks to Detective Go’s quick wit in pretending that she’s with him but can’t come to the phone because she’s too busy beating up a criminal. Ha!

Kil-young meets with the police chief to ask about Hyun-joo, and it turns out that her personal relation to him is that he used to be on her mother’s team when he was a rookie. He was the person she called for backup that night. Kil-young demands to know if they’re looking into Hong-joo, since she’s listed as a suspect in her mother’s case notes.

The police chief insists that the statute of limitations has passed and the only testimony they had from that time was a security guard who confessed he saw the two girls together the night Hyun-joo disappeared. But the guard has since retracted his statement, saying he was confused.

Kil-young’s determined to investigate Hong-joo, not caring that Hong-joo is currently a congresswoman or was the daughter of the school’s director back then. She begs the police chief to tell her where that guard is now so she can investigate, but the police chief cautiously says that as much as he respected and admired Kil-young’s mother as a detective, ultimately her mother was incorrect in her hunch. It sounds like he’s more scared about investigating Hong-joo since it could mean he could lose his job.

Yoon informs Hwa-pyung about Hong-joo’s connection to Sharing Hand and the recently possessed victims. Hwa-pyung’s at the police station and follows Kil-young, asking if she’s found a suspect for Hyun-joo’s case. Despite Kil-young telling him to stay out of it, Hwa-pyung insists it has to do with Park Il-do, then asks if she’s heard of Hong-joo.

He explains that Hong-joo is connected to the people who have been recently possessed, but Kil-young is just shocked to hear Hong-joo’s name, since the congresswoman is a suspect in Hyun-joo’s case. Once again, everything seems to tie back to Park Il-do.

Yoon visits Priest Yang, who assumes the younger priest wants more information about Sharing Hand. But Yoon instead asks about Hong-joo, revealing that she’s connected to those who have been possessed by Park Il-do. Priest Yang scoffs at the implication that Hong-joo is also possessed, since she’s a devout Christian and an active member of Sharing Hand. Yoon is surprised to hear that Hong-joo regularly visits the church.

Hwa-pyung and Kil-young stop by Hyun-joo’s grandmother’s home. Ha, Kil-young goes along with Hwa-pyung’s lie that they’re reporters, since she’s out of her jurisdiction and has no authority to investigate. Grandma tells them that she never believed that Hyun-joo ran away, since she was a good girl who loved her family and home. Grandma also reveals that Hyun-joo was deaf.

Hwa-pyung asks if Grandma has seen Hong-joo before, but Grandma doesn’t think so. Nor has she seen anyone else suspicious, but remembers the detective who used to visit them everyday — that detective was the only person who believed that Hyun-joo hadn’t run away. Grandma sighs as she reveals that the detective died while on duty, and Kil-young knows the woman is talking about her mother.

Tamping down her emotions, Kil-young studies her mother’s case notes. Hwa-pyung cautiously asks if she’s okay, and Kil-young says that working on this case feels like some sort of divine punishment for her adolescent petulance the night her mother died.

She gets word that the guard who originally testified he saw Hong-joo with Hyun-joo that night now lives in a psychiatric hospital due to severe paranoia — he believes someone is trying to kill him. Could that someone be Hong-joo, who confidently strides up to the doors of the church? Despite a moment’s hesitation, she enters the holy building without her skin burning off. She kneels to pray, as Yoon quietly observes from the back of the church.

Hwa-pyung and Kil-young go to the psychiatric hospital to meet with the guard, Kim Noh-seok. He’s in a locked ward, and ignores them as he sits in the corner, drawing something on the floor. Kil-young sets down a photo of Hyun-joo next to him, asking if he remembers her and what happened the night she disappeared.

Noh-seok doesn’t say anything, and the nurse interjects that Noh-seok hasn’t really spoken in years, since his paranoia is such that he believes he’ll be killed if he speaks. Kil-young and Hwa-pyung get closer to see what Noh-seok is drawing, and it’s a sketch of a person with their right eye stabbed out. Hwa-pyung asks if Noh-seok has seen Park Il-do, and then shows the man a photo of Hong-joo. Noh-seok starts to flail in panic.

Yoon greets Hong-joo as she leaves the church, introducing himself as a visiting priest and expressing interest in her involvement with Sharing Hand — adding that he saw her recently in his hometown. It’s all polite vagueness, but as she turns to leave, Yoon bluntly asks if she puts her trust in God, and not the devil.

Hong-joo stares at him for a moment, then smiles and says that she does. Yoon proffers his hand for her to shake “goodbye,” — a hand that is also draped with his rosary. She glances at it, but doesn’t touch his hand as she tells him she’ll see him around.

Hwa-pyung is convinced that Hong-joo is Park Il-do, but Kil-young tells him not to jump to conclusions based on the slim evidence of a mentally ill man. She points out that if Park Il-do possessed Hong-joo that night, then why didn’t Park Il-do just possess the security guard as well, killing the guard so he couldn’t testify. Hwa-pyung retorts that Park Il-do doesn’t work like that, and besides, Hwa-pyung is still convinced that Park Il-do is involved.

When she returns to her own police station, Detective Go grumbles about having to cover for her all day. She tells him about the new information regarding her mother’s old case, and he warns Kil-young not to get into trouble since it’s not her current case. Even so, it’s her mother’s old case — she can’t ignore it.

Detective Go is also shocked that Kil-young’s main suspect is a congresswoman, since they can’t even think about touching Hong-joo without evidence. He warns Kil-young that they’ll be fired if they investigate, and Kil-young sighs, admitting it’s a difficult situation, especially when their only witness is mentally ill.

Yoon calls Hwa-pyung — who’s staking out Hong-joo’s office — and the two men meet up. Yoon reveals that he saw Hong-joo last night and he’s not convinced Hong-joo is possessed, since she went into the church and prayed. He asks if Hwa-pyung really believes Hong-joo is the main suspect in Hyun-joo’s death, and Hwa-pyung tells him about Noh-seok, reiterating that he still believes Hong-joo is possessed by Park Il-do.

His theory is that Hong-joo killed the other girl and buried her in the forest, which is how she ran into Priest Choi, since that’s where he killed himself. Park Il-do decided to move from Priest Choi — a criminal wanted by the police — to Hong-joo, a high school student who could evade suspicion.

By all rights, Kil-young should give up on the case since it’s not her jurisdiction, but instead she tracks down a woman, Han Mi-jin, who used to be friends with Hyun-joo. Mi-jin cautiously says that she doesn’t know anything, and tells Kil-young to leave since she’s busy running her restaurant.

But she looks worried when she later checks to make sure Kil-young is really gone, and her husband asks if everything is okay. Mi-jin shrugs it off, but watching a couple of happy high school students makes her nervous, and she tells her husband to take care of the restaurant while she goes home to rest with their young son.

She sits at the bus stop, lost in thought. Her son almost gets on the bus without her, but Yoon gently stops him. Mi-jin profusely thanks the priest for making sure her son didn’t leave without her, but her face freezes when Yoon reveals that he’s there because of Hyun-joo. Hwa-pyung and Kil-young are standing with him.

Hwa-pyung tells Mi-jin that they found Hyun-joo’s body a few days ago, and Mi-jin breaks down sobbing. The trio go with Mi-jin to her home. As her son plays in his room, Mi-jin reveals that she’s been keeping quiet about that night for the past twenty years.

Mi-jin had waited for Hyun-joo outside the school so they could walk home together like they always did, but when Hyun-joo didn’t come out, Mi-jin went inside to find her. She discovered that Hong-joo was yelling and hitting Hyun-joo. Mi-jin hid while she watched her friend quietly take Hong-joo’s abuse.

Hong-joo kept ordering Hyun-joo to answer her, but Hyun-joo tried to escape by pushing Hong-joo away and making a run for it. Hong-joo grabbed the younger girl by the hair and pulled her back inside. Then Hong-joo picked up a chair and slammed it down on the girl. Hyun-joo didn’t move, and terrified, Mi-jin ran outside, where she was caught by Noh-seok, the security guard.

Through her sobs, she told Noh-seok what was happening. But when he went to investigate, he returned and, a little dazedly, said that everything was okay and that Mi-jin should just go home, warning her not to tell anyone what she saw.

Mi-jin begins to cry as she admits she was scared to talk to the police once Hyun-joo went missing, since everyone said that Hyun-joo had run away. Everyone except for Kil-young’s mother, who died the night before Mi-jin could meet with the detective and give her testimony.

A few days after Hyun-joo disappeared, she went to talk to Noh-seok about what happened. But Noh-seok angrily told her not to talk about it because “he” might hear them. The guard screamed at her to stop talking, because “he’ll” kill them if she says anything, adding that’s the reason the female detective died.

Noh-seok attempted to strangle Mi-jin, but she broke free and ran away while the guard yelled at her to keep quiet or else “he’ll kill you.” Mi-jin said she was too terrified to do anything after that, choosing to believe that Hyun-joo ran away since that was the safest option.

Mi-jin’s son breaks the somber atmosphere by entering the living room to play with his toy ambulance. As Mi-jin holds her son, she confesses that she’s thought about Hyun-joo ever since that day, feeling guilty that she never spoke up to defend her friend. She muses that it feels like karma that her son also is hard of hearing, just like Hyun-joo.

Outside, the trio discuss their options. Kil-young says that none of the witnesses can testify, but Hwa-pyung doesn’t care, since he’s still adamant that Hong-joo is Park Il-do. Kil-young doesn’t believe it, but asks what he’ll do about it if he’s right about the possession. Yoon says that he and Hwa-pyung will take over since it involves exorcism — they don’t need the police.

Angry, Kil-young points out that Yoon keeps trying to push her away even though she wants to catch Park Il-do as much as they do. Yoon insists that it’s too dangerous, reminding her that Park Il-do is a violent and brutal spirit. Kil-young says that he doesn’t need to worry about her, but when Yoon suggests that what happened to her mother could happen to her, she’s ready to fight the priest.

Hwa-pyung intervenes, reminding them they don’t have time to fight each other. Furious, Kil-young asks Hwa-pyung if he knows any other exorcist priests — she’s done with Yoon and refuses to work with him any longer. She gets in her car and drives away.

Annoyed, Hwa-pyung chastises Yoon for pushing Kil-young away, reminding him that they need her help to catch Park Il-do. Yoon yells at him, asking Hwa-pyung if he also feels guilty for putting Kil-young in danger.

Hwa-pyung shouts back that he feels sorry for all of them, but that’s not going to get them anywhere when it comes to catching Park Il-do. He pleads with Yoon, reminding them that they’re so close — after all, Park Il-do is in Hong-joo. Yoon’s still not convinced that Hong-joo is possessed, but Hwa-pyung is adamant, and will prove it when he can get close enough to Hong-joo himself.

Hwa-pyung sneaks into a Sharing Hand event that Hong-joo is attending. He charmingly introduces himself as not only one of her political supporters, but coming from the same hometown. Then he “innocently” asks if she’s heard about the missing girl’s body being found, wondering if she knew the girl who died.

When Hong-joo says she doesn’t, Hwa-pyung fakes surprise, noting that Hong-joo worked at the school the girl attended. Hwa-pyung then asks if she knows the name “Park Il-do.” Her smile gone, Hong-joo stares at him for a moment, then walks away without answer.

But she’s all smiles again when Yoon greets her. She’s happy to see the priest, but hesitant when he offers her a rosary as a token of his appreciation for everything she’s done at Sharing Hand. He blesses it with a prayer and holds it out to her. She takes it as both Hwa-pyung and Yoon watch intently — but her skin doesn’t burn!

Smiling, she thanks him for his gift. All signs point to her not being possessed, a fact Hwa-pyung isn’t willing to accept. However, they learn from Priest Yang that there’s something called a “complete possession,” where a demon, having taken over the body for a long time, can stay disguised since holy items don’t affect it as much. There would be no way to know if the person is possessed unless the demon decided to show itself, and any exorcism attempt could take years.

Hong-joo stumbles out of the bathroom, where it sounds like she’s been vomiting. She looks haggard and sick as she stares in the mirror. She pulls out Yoon’s rosary, shrieking as she breaks it into pieces.

Hwa-pyung is still determined to confront Hong-joo and make her reveal she knows Park Il-do. Yoon rationally points out that it’s not easy for a couple of random guys to get close to a powerful congresswoman. Yoon reiterates they need to discretely determine if she’s possessed or not.

Remembering that everyone possessed by Park Il-do loses their eyesight in their right eye, Hwa-pyung says they should find out if Hong-joo can see out of that eye. If she can’t, then they can exorcise her!

Yoon reveals that he no longer has the authority to perform exorcisms, though. Frustrated, Hwa-pyung points out that Yoon still has the skills and know-how, so it’s stupid that Yoon is determined to follow the rules of the church when lives might be at stake. But Yoon is resolute, and Hwa-pyung grumbles that he’ll just do it himself, then.

Meanwhile, Kil-young tries to get the results of Hyun-joo’s autopsy. But the police chief refuses to tell her anything, irritated that she’s poking her nose where it doesn’t belong, and reveals that Noh-seok escaped from the psychiatric hospital last night.

Yoon once more goes through all the Sharing Hand brochures and discovers that Sharing Hand has worked closely with the psychiatric hospital ever since the charity was founded.

Noh-seok gulps down tons of water at Mi-jin’s restaurant. She’s not there, thankfully. But her husband is a little disturbed by Noh-seok and the way he keeps repeating “You shouldn’t have called me that night.” Mi-jin’s husband calls to check on her, and Noh-seok eavesdrops, so now he knows that Mi-jin’s at home.

Hwa-pyung’s lost in a trance, and his point-of-view shows someone climbing onto Mi-jin’s balcony and looking in, watching her sleep while her son plays in his room with his toy ambulance. But the sound of the toy mingles with the sound of a real ambulance driving by Hwa-pyung’s taxi, which shakes him out of his reverie.

Noh-seok breaks into Mi-jin’s apartment, but he ignores the boy — who, due to his hearing loss, is unaware that there’s another person in the room. Noh-seok grabs a knife from the kitchen and Mi-jin wakes up, demanding to know who’s there. When she sees who it is, she runs to her son’s room and locks the door.

Clutching her son tightly to her chest, she waits until there’s only silence in living room. Cautiously she approaches the door, then screams in terror when a knife stabs through it. As Noh-seok brutally hacks his way through the door, Mi-jin hides her son in the wardrobe.

Kil-young stops by the restaurant, asking if the husband has seen a strange man recently. Mi-jin’s husband describes Noh-seok, so Kil-young speeds to Mi-jin’s apartment, arriving at the same time Yoon does. But they’re too late — as is Hwa-pyung, who just stares at the dead bodies of Mi-jin and Noh-seok, the latter of which has stabbed out his right eye.

Yoon realizes that the boy must be somewhere, and they find him peering out from the wardrobe. Yoon rushes over to block the boy’s view of the bloodshed, hugging him tightly.

The police arrive to investigate the crime scene and carry away the bodies. Noh-seok’s body is still dripping sea water. Kil-young watches as the only witnesses in the last case her mother worked on are taken away.

The trio watch as Mi-jin’s husband sobs in grief while clinging to his son. Hwa-pyung decides to take matters into his own hands and kill Hong-joo before more innocent people die.

Yoon grabs him, reminding him that if he kills a possessed person, he’s no better than a demon. Hwa-pyung angrily points out that another person has already died because they didn’t take action. When Yoon tries to block his way, Hwa-pyung punches the priest and drives off.

Kil-young yells at them for acting like immature children, but Yoon worriedly tells her that they need to stop Hwa-pyung.

Hwa-pyung goes to the site where Hong-joo is giving a lecture. He waits in the hallway until she’s alone. She yells at him to leave her alone while she makes a call, thinking he’s one of her aides, but is surprised to see that it’s Hwa-pyung.

With crazed eyes, he asks if she killed Mi-jin and Noh-seok. Annoyed, she tells him to leave, calling for her aides as Hwa-pyung approaches her. Hwa-pyung demands to know why she’s killed so many innocent people, but she keeps yelling that he’s crazy and for him to leave her alone.

Hong-joo scoffs at his insistence that she’s Park Il-do, and when he asks if she’s blind in her right eye, she sneers at him, telling him that she’s heard of him, the crazy kid who killed his family. But Hwa-pyung grabs her and covers her left eye, demanding to know if she can see him.

Determined to finish what he couldn’t twenty years ago, Hwa-pyung grabs a knife from his bag. Just then, Hong-joo’s aides rush in, and, perceiving an assassination attempt on their boss, carry Hwa-pyung away as he screams Park Il-do’s name at Hong-joo. Yoon and Kil-young also arrive, and Hong-joo just smirks at them.

COMMENTS

Oooooh, so is Hong-joo possessed or not? She certainly gives off a possessed vibe, but, as we know, there’s no hard evidence. Yoon’s rosary did seem to have a belated effect — or maybe it was just food poisoning and, despite her supposed devoutness, maybe she just hates religious items (hey, I can be as skeptical as Kil-young). Buuut… she’s possessed, right? Park Il-do could have easily bounced from the then-useless Priest Choi to the vessel of a young woman so rage-filled and cold-blooded that she’d kill a teenage girl for apparently not giving her respect. I’m pretty sure a demon would be much more at home in a narcissistic politician that has a lot of influence over people, versus a young priest whose primary “dark side” is the frustration that he didn’t want to be a priest in the first place.

Obviously if Park Il-do can possess a priest for a day or two, then he should have no problem acting like a devout believer for twenty years. That is, if we take Priest Yang’s description of “complete possession” at face value. I’m still suspicious about Priest Yang, because for all the interaction Hong-joo has had with Sharing Hand and the various possessed people who have been “helped” by the charity, Priest Yang was the one who created the charity in the first place. Maybe his drinking is to cover up a different kind of pain. I still want him to be innocent, just for Yoon’s sake (because that poor guy doesn’t need to find out that one of his mentors was secretly possessed by a demon — he’s traumatized enough as it is!).

As much as I appreciate Hwa-pyung’s desperation to find Park Il-do (and his firm belief that he has found Park Il-do), I’m getting a little annoyed that our trio keeps trying to be individual renegades. Haven’t they learned (the hard way) that success only comes when working together? Yoon needs to stop pushing Kil-young away “for her own good.” I know he feels guilty for being the reason her mother died, but Kil-young isn’t a child any more — she’s a grown woman, a skilled detective (and fighter), and she can make her choices about what sort of dangerous things she wants to be involved in. Besides, if it weren’t for her involvement, Yoon and Hwa-pyung would have died multiple times already. Who else will drop-kick a demon in order to save their asses, if it not for Kil-young?

I want to yell at the trio that working together means working together. Hwa-pyung’s urgency to make sure no more innocent lives are lost to Park Il-do is understandable, but Yoon’s cautiousness and Kil-young’s need for evidence are also important so that even more innocent people aren’t unnecessarily killed. As Yoon pointed out, they’re no better than the demons they’re fighting if they decide the only way to get rid of Park Il-do is by killing the host body. Fighting fire with fire may work in some cases, but this fracturing of the trio is exactly what Park Il-do wants. And if he is really possessing Hong-joo, he knows that his plan is working all too well. Hopefully Yoon teams up with Kil-young to save Hwa-pyung instead of trying to convince her it’s “too dangerous.” The trio need each other more than ever, and no demon should have the satisfaction of tearing them apart.

Hwa-pyung is slowly starting to get on my nerves. I suppose being spontaneous is supposed to be part of his charm, but he really didn't think that attack on Hong-joo through. Mateo (why does everyone call him Yoon when his last name is Choi) also frustrates me sometimes because he thinks way too much. I guess it makes sense that both Male characters are extremes? Anyway, I'm still loving the fact that Kil-young is the most levelheaded one among this trio. It almost reminds me of Harry, Ron, and Hermione's situation.

Isn't his name Choi Yoon? And maybe it's a way to diffuse confusion when speaking of his brother because two Father Chois would be difficult. I'm wondering why Mateo, or did I miss the explanation for that?

Seems like it's his Christian name and that's what he uses now.

I just realized that his first name is indeed Yoon, I was confused because that's also Hwa-pyung's last name. Mateo is the priest's Christian name.

Mateo (Matthew) is Choi Yoon's baptismal name, which is a saint's name. Depending on the religious order, priests and nuns may also take the name of one or two patron saints/archangels when they take Holy Orders or make their final vows, respectively. That is how I had nuns for teachers with names like Sister Robert and Sister Margaret Raphael.

I forgot about the Holy Orders names, and also the taking of Christian saint names during baptism.

I think Yoon (I can't call him Mateo sorry) is lost now, his whole reason to become priest and exorcist was to find his brother and "save" him from evil spirit, and that was the reason he agreed to cooperate with HP. But now his brother is dead, and been dead for long time, his skills as exorcist fails him, because he can not for sure say whether councilwoman is possessed or not.

There also have been continuing revelations about demonic possession, including the convenient loophole known as “complete possession.” If it is indeed possible that Hong-joo has been possessed all this time, I can still think of someone who might have even more chronological "seniority," and that is Yoon himself. Now wouldn't that be a diabolical hiding place. Park Il-do wouldn't care that his host was dispatching his subordinates.

At this point, I don't know what to think.

As You think that Yoon is possessed? I don't think it's possible because demonic possession takes toll on ones mind, body and soul. We saw this in people who weren't willing host as they start self harming only evil mechanic brother seemed unharmed, but as priest Yang said hosting demon for so long would kill the host and only his physical body would left.

@shach,

I don't really think Yoon has been hosting PID all this time, but the notion of "complete possession" makes me wonder about the long-term prospects for hiding in plain sight. It would be ironic if PID disguised itself as an exorcist.

This week's episodes have me quite confused, which is probably Writer-nim's intent. Is Hong-joo just plain evil in a human way? Is Helping Hand a front for some other kind of non-demonic evil? I don't know. I'm also getting a bit exhausted, but will keep watching. ;-)

HP is definitely rubbing off on the two of them. They don't even care now that he's blatantly lying to people and just go along with his lies.
HJ is really fascinating. It's more fun if we're not sure whether she's possessed or not, just like the trio.

@superwhopotterlock I loved that KY just gave HP that look when he called her a rookie reporter, and did not argue. HP sure is smooth with his lies in the name of getting info on PID.

The show does this so well: the letting us viewers play along with the characters in trying to figure out who's got the demons in them and which one has PID. They don't seem to co-exist in the same person or to share a host. That's the impression I got.

Even I think so. Park il do is too strong. I don't think the host will survive if they accommodate more spirits in the same body with park il do.

Hwa-pyung is too hotheaded but I can't really speak for him since I didn't go through what he did. For one, I was really mad that Minji had to die. The security died too and the kid will now be traumatized from all this. I was totally raging while watching that scene and I surprised myself with how much I cried as Yoon tried to shield the kid from seeing his mother dead. I was bawling. If anything, that scene gave me a glimpse as to why Hwa-pyung acted that way. I don't agree with him. I know he's in the wrong. It's just that I understand why he did that. Hopefully, he learns from this. These three can all learn from each other. It's just a matter of getting them together and make it actually work.

Hong-joo is possessed alright. She could read Hwa-pyung's innermost guilt just like the other possessed bodies before. I still don't think she's Park Il Do though. My bet is still on Hwa-pyung's dad.

this is off topic: the child actor is also the one who played little Ryan Gold/Heo Yoon Jae in HPL.. 😊 I was just happy watching the 2 Heo Yoon Jae's together..
That scene was moving, Mateo shielding the kid from seeing his lifeless mom.. 😭 He can fully sympathize with the trauma the kid will experience as he himself was traumatized with his parents' tragic death.

He was looking for Park Il Do all his life, seeing all the deaths of innocent people. Now they think to have found him, he's ready to sacrifice himself to stop him. It's not the best idea, but I understand why he's so eager to end all of that.

I like Ki Young. She's new in this demon world, but she's very brave.

I think they are stubborn of not want to work with each other and tried to be a sacrificial lamb. I do hope they get together because next episode was a whole new level.

I posted a note regarding DramaFever app and the new apple update.

I didn't get any gleefulness in his demeanor, I read him as someone ridden with guilt to the point that he withdrew emotionally and trying to repent for his past "sins", from being exorcist he went to orphanage head and working in foundation for those down on their luck, and he is father figure for Yoon so he must be significant presence in his life.

Seeing as how I'm the original poster of half the text that was written above... I feel obliged to explain why I felt he was perhaps a little gleeful. I feel that he was really shifty whenever asked about the possession of the priest and the congresswoman. He was always either looking elsewhere or drinking heavily and etc., not forgetting his strange (if not fascinated) expression, when he said Satan is powerful to the kids who bummed off bible studies. I feel he's not PID, but the real devil aka Satan.

"Sharing hands' Father Yang must be the devil, how could he missed so many signs of possessions otherwise? First the young boy and now the congresswoman? So shady and was he gleefully telling them how the demon must be 'one' with the possessed? That feels like a hint."

omg Hwa-Pyung made me pretty nervous in this episode especially at the end I was like 'bruh, please calm down' lol. Yoon was also getting on my nerves because I get that he wants to keep Kil-Young out of this whole demon business but she ain't no damsel in distress and she is an obvious asset since she can legally investigate and whatnot.

Really looking forward to the group working more cohesively, because last week's episode proved how great they could be as a team!

"His theory is that Hong-joo killed the other girl and buried her in the forest, which is how she ran into Priest Choi, since that’s where he killed himself. Park Il-do decided to move from Priest Choi — a criminal wanted by the police — to Hong-joo, a high school student who could evade suspicion."

His theory seems to be wrong? Because the Security guard saw Park Il Do/a demon when he went to check that night - and this is before Hong Joo dragged the dead body and buried it in the forest (I'm assuming). He went when Mi Jin ran away from the frighening things she saw. This indicates Hong Joo was already possessed at that point in time?

I think that he was scared that night because she was the director's daughter and she probably threatened him, not necessarily because she was possessed. Later on when he decided to be brave and gave his statement, Park il do had possessed her in the meantime and threatened both him and minji. after that he retracted his statement and slowly started losing his sanity.

That's what I am still wondering about. On the other hand, didn't he draw a person with a knife in the eye? Than it couldn't be Hong Joo, since she doesn't have any scars in her face. I'm confused.

Hmm....I think he was drawing Park Il Do. Who possessed Hong Joo, not Hong Joo herself.

This could be possible. But then again, Park Il Do is a spirit, can a normal person see him?

Weren't that few day after? I got impression that Hong Joo was older than the students, teacher or some other position in her mother school, maybe she intimidated him into helping hide the body and was witness to her possession, that would definitely messed guard up.

I don’t think he saw the demon the night Hong-joo abused Hyun-joo, because when he strangled Min-ji (and warned her about not telling what they saw that night or else they’d get killed by “him”) that was several days after the school incident and Hyun-joo went missing.

This show keeps getting better and better. Although our boys keep getting on my nerves, HP with his hotheadedness and Yoon by digging his heels and refusing to work with anyone. I'm actually like the idea of Hong Joo being PID it's break the mould we follow until now, because we are suspicious but don't have concrete evidence and even after our trio get them, what they gonna do? How You approach not only powerful demon but also powerful human? They can't just whisk her away to some basement, exorcise and be on their merry way. It seems none of usual exorcisms Yoon is accustomed will work and he lacks knowledge in dealing with something so powerful. I writers keep that direction it would fun to watch them struggling with solution and working to stop further mayhem by PID underlings demons. And I think priest Yang can be recruited into Scooby gang as he posses far better knowledge on exorcisms and a lot more practice, I don't think he is possessed or willing accomplice, he just so drown into his sorrow (bit similar to Yoon) that he just ignores outside world.

@shach
I was also thinking that PHJ poses an interesting challenge for the trio. No longer is it just 'find PID', now it is: 'find a way to prove that this is PID'. This keeps the show fresh from the usual crime and detection series. As long as PHJ keeps her nose clean, so to speak, she will not reveal herself.

What we need are some renegade demons who will turn on PID and betray him. We always seem to have human moles or double-crossers,... I wonder if demons have a 'better' code of ethics among themselves or they're just plain scared of PID because he knows what they are up to?!?! 😖

That interesting, but I think they don't have much to offer in bargain with demons to have them to rattle on PID, isn't wreaking havoc what demons want, and PID gives them free reign with that.

I Like this show, but i just can't watch horror, so I stick to the recaps. I'm tempted to watch it, but I just can't do it, I'm such a coward.

Possession and exorcisms is such a fascinating topic for me, as someone who grew up with Christian belief and also experienced seeing the supernatural, though i never met anyone who was possessed but heard stories of how exorcism works. I believe that the congresswoman is indeed and maybe Priest Yang too, tho im not from a fundamental sect, drinking alcoholic drinks is a no no, and don't they make you more susceptible for possession? lol.

But I want justice to be served for the innocent lives that was killed, whether a product of demonic acts or human will, i want the right person to be put in jail.

HP too hotheaded but I do understand his reasons. But at the same time, I also understand Yoon's. I mean, making them a trio with KGY may make her suffer the same fate as her mother. It is out of compassion and guilt. Predictably, HP hotheadedness did lands him in trouble.
As for PHJ, when she avoid shaking hand with Yoon, I was all PID!! and when she take that blessed rosary, I was..ok.. I guess it is priest yang then~ lol But turns out it is just a facade as that rosary has affect on her. So now, she is back as my top PID candidate (again). Probably easier for PID to posses her anyway since she was nasty af even without bad spirit residing in her.
And I still suspicious to Priest Yang tbh. He probably just offering that theory with Yoon and HP so that they focus on PHJ to save himself. I mean, they cant even check about it right? easy way out~

I love this show! I appreciate how it has a coherent storyline and I love the little details that showed how Park Il-do affected them in different ways, like Priest Yoon instinctively looked for Mi-jin's son and covered his eyes to block the bloodshed. And Hwa-pyoung shielding Priest Yoon from the possessed brother an earlier episode. I'm almost certain Hong-joo is Park Il-do. I feel this episode showed the effects of Park Il-do the most, on the innocents and the trio. It was such a pity Mi-jin died, I thought they would be in time to save her. This episode showed how each of them are so different, but you guys would be awesome if you learn to work together! Kudos to all the possessed actors cameos, they are so awesome and freaking scary!

I too was trying to figure out whether Hong joo was possessed. Certain actions do point to her being so, like these sudden outbursts but then it's been shown she has always had some temper since 20yrs ago; the breaking of the rosary could just be her hating on religious objects and her charity acts are shown to be just an act, no? I had to pause and think what could be PID's motives/goals(because if she's possessed her actions would be driven by PID's goals) as some commenter asked in the prev ep recap... I couldn't imagine one.

Perhaps this demon/evil spirit operates like Hannibal - he does things because "he wanted to see what would happen". Maybe..

I don't think politician woman is Park Il Do because when she was talking to him about his mother and grandmother's death, it didn't seemed like something the spirit was directly involved. I mean the tone and intonation in Korean made me think so.
Another thing that makes me suspicious of priest yang is his eyes, I don't know why it feels like, the people who are possessed has kind of 'really' black eyes. But then I watched him in another drama (heart surgeons) but he had the same fishy eyes there too. So it could be the actor's natural feature.

@amylovesoppa I feel the actor playing Priest Yang often has the same world-weary look on his face and in his eyes, so it's hard to tell just by his expression. I'm still watching for clues about every character to figure out who's hosting the evil spirits.

Thanks @odilettante. I'm glad show is not going the horror for horror's sake route. It's actually quite watchable and re-watchable. Sometimes I use the SHIFT RIGHT ARROW to jump ahead, but then I re-watch anyway.

I like how the plot progresses, how there's follow-through and how everything holds together. It's great that each case leads the three to greater knowledge and helps them in their future decisions, such as Yoon reminding HP not to be rash after they made the mistake over the junkyard brothers. There are of course some coincidences to get everyone on board and to bring them to the next plot point, but it's not so obviously deliberate as to be annoying.

Despite the trio's arguments and appearing to be in separate places and doing different things, I felt that there was actually a nice undercurrent of cohesion, of working towards the same ends, of communication between them and of understanding enough to know when to go to or to call each other.

To an extent they had automatically divided the work. I liked how Yoon did his investigation with Priest Yang on the Park Hong Joo front while keeping HP in the know and that HP exchanged info with him on the high school girl's death. Also HP and KY get to team up quite a bit and the 3 end up together to speak with Han Mi Jin.

What was great in the writing was that HP and KY both realised that Mi Jin was in danger through different routes and converged on her house at the same time. This time KY did not need to depend on HP's visions.

I was so hoping that Mi Jin would have been saved since the trio came to the same conclusion that she was in danger, quite quickly. So I'm actually very sad &#x1F62D that Mi Jin could not have been spared. I guess it's been an average of one death a week?

About the sequence of events in the school killing. Possibly it was in this order - Park Hong Joo likely kills Hyeon Ju in school, guard comes back after seeing what Hong Joo did, is afraid and tells Mi Jin not to let anyone know what she saw and to go home but he does so in a normal voice and naturally. A few days later, KY's mum had made an appointment to speak to Mi Jin. Before that or maybe just after that she went to see the guard but he was different. He was drawing furiously and spoke in a strange, thick voice. It could be that he 'met' the demons in the time in between. He went mad, and was possibly already targeted by the demons to be a host (to be possessed) when he was needed. Anyway, the hospital he was at, was also a Sharing Hands beneficiary and may have been rife with evil spirits!! 😰

You know I think Park Hong-joo is Park Il-do’s ultimate host (if fangirls can have their ultimate biases then why can’t demons have their ultimate hosts?) LOL Or his first host before he possessed Hwa-pyung’s uncle and HP.
If what the guard said is true, and it’s not just one of PID’s tricks, that Kyung-joo’s mom died because she’s invigating Hyun-joo’s case then how did he know about Hyun-joo’s killing? Unless PID possessed Park Hyun-joo?

@giegie0384
Trying to straighten it out in my mind ... I too heard the guard say that KY's mum died because she investigated Hyeon Ju's death. So you're saying if PID knew she was investigating, then PID must have already been in Park Hong Joo at the time she killed Hyeon Ju? Although this part might be true, it's hard to tie it directly to how KY's mum died.

If the demon was planning to kill her, there were too many variables to manage in order to get her on the road at the right place and right time, when HP as a child, was standing there. If not for HP, KY's mum would not have stopped her car.

I do believe it's possible though, that although KY's mum was at Yoon's house by chance, the demon recognised her as the cop who was also investigating Hyeon Ju's death, and so took the opportunity to kill her as well.

Maybe it was just demon lies? Because time line don't fit this narrative, first we have Hyeon Ju murder/disappearnce, then KY mum investigate and stumble upon possessed priest Choi, and sometimes after someone hiding Hyeon Ju body finds priest Choi hanging on the tree. According to this PID shouldn't know anything about Hyeon Ju/Hong Joo during the time he killed KY mother.

Confused and confounded!! 😒 😖 😆

I think Hyeon ju's death was not related to PID, that politician lady did it on herself. May be after some days she was burying the body in that forest or she was revisiting the burial place when she encountered priest choi (which could be the same day he killed his family and ky mom) But I don't think she is PID though somewhere in between PID must have encountered priest yang.
PID's host being such a mystery and an important character, will not be a new character appearing this late in the game. It will be somebody already mentioned or somebody we have already seen. (or maybe its not tooo late)

I have never seen Ahn Nae sang in an aggressive role or in a bigg badddie role. Because if he is confirmed to be PID there will be lot of fighting, aggressive yelling and violence. Lets look forward to this.
BTW, I have noticed that the place where priest choi and hyeon joo's bodies' were found is little creepy. I mean it looked like somebody was towering around them. So is that the resting place/root/or something-something of PID.

2

Thanks @odilettante for the recap , and for who's PID I share the same thoughts as @giegie0384 about PHJ being his ultimate host and his favorite apprentice as I think he is someone else , but I don't want to say anything until these weeks episodes to be sure of my suspicions .

Thank you for recapping, odilettante!

Since evil spirits jump from one host to another, what is the likelihood that the poor little child who was present at his mother's murder could end up being infested? On the other hand, Yoon/Mateo was apparently not possessed under similar circumstances. Hmmm.

I have to keep reminding myself that humans who are not possessed by evil spirits are the perpetrators of evil in real life. This is not a comforting thought. I think I'll just rock quietly in the corner for a while.

I am not really annoyed by Hwa Puyng's actions this episode I could see where he is coming from, the trio have been succsseful until now in their exorcism but you could feel their feel helplessness when they found MinJi and the guard, their sadness and desperation was palpable knowing they didnt succssed, you knew they were reliving that night espicially Yoon when he was looking for the child and then sheilding him
